If you have room, I'll pitch in for fuel!!!

BTW...  what is the significance of "nets in the air"?

Nets in the air is seeing other boats with a bent rod and a guy holding a net getting ready to boat it.....

It’s a sure fire boat attractor.  If you’re lonely and want some company grab the net and wave it round wildly then dip it the water a few times.

Ah, got it!  I thought you were referring to guys who have their nets in the rocket launchers, like that was somehow a signal for something.  I was worried for a sec that I had been inadvertently advertising my availability to potential mates or something....

Even better....when things get slow and it is time to check the gear......just get up real fast, run back, grap that rod, pop that sucker off the rigger and real like a madman......set it down, do the same to the other side then yell to your buddy in the boat that you missed them both!

The most fun is to pull up next to a couple of boats, then wave the net in the air like you're trying to catch a couple of butterflys.  Then when you see the fleet heading your way like yellowjackets to the picnic - then you can quietly slip out and go to fish your own spot...  :chuckle:

I got into some pinks today between the oil docks and shilshole (to go along with a pair of kings  :hello:).  Had the wife and kids come down after I was done and they got a few more. Not thick yet, but they're here.  I'm sure shipwreck would have been similar.  If you want to fill the boat, I'm guessing next weekend will be prime time.

That's a bit of a haul for me - I keep the boat in the water in the Everett marina.  Could trailer it if it was worth it, though.  Just never fished area 10 before, so I'd be running blind.

Crappy cellphone pic, but there was a good 25-30 boats out there!  Couldn't get very many in one pic though...

We missed on 2 hits, and that's all the action we had in 5 hrs of fishing.  Saw 3 landed on other boats, and the fish counter gal at the launch said there were 40ish so far for the day.  I hope the numbers are better today for the Salmon for Soldiers guys!!!

Fishing this weekend should be madness. I don't know about everyone else but the pinks I'm catching are already showing sign of coloring up. We are catching them from 40 feet down in the morning to 120-150 when the sun is up. We are fishing the deeper water.....trolling 100 down in 400-500 out from shipwreck, humpy hollow, and browns bay. I'm have the best look with a standard white dodger and hoochie. Flashers fished next to dodgers just aren't getting hit for me. I've seen other boats as well as my own lose more fish than landed. Lighten that drag and keep the fish in the water. Less thrashing on the surface, sharp fresh smaller diameter hooks, and a steady retrieve should bring more fish boatside. Make sure you are safe and lega as enforcment is out in full. I've been checked twice now and have passed just fine.

I'll be out Sat and Sun....see you out there.

On Saturday we went 4 for 5 in the Salmon for Soldiers Event. Deeper water 300 - 350 feet and 55 feet on the downriggers was the magic numbers. White dodgers, the old standby was the ticket.

TRolled all morning until 100 in the afternoon. Ship wreck, Humpy hollow, deep water, shallow water, from 25 feet to 70 and only 2 hits. 11" flasher with a pink mini squid. Nothing to show for it. Only saw 1 net out...hopefully getting closer to the weekend will bring more success.......I hope

Here yah go.....this is what I was seeing and looking for when fishing.....as we worked this section we put the riggers at 130 and 110 and had two hook ups, one lost and one landed. If you see 'em, or think they are deeper...go for it.

Were heading out Saturday with Kenzmed, Were gonna murder them salmon. Pretty stoked, never fished for salmon from a boat.

Our graph from Saturday at shipwreck Looked a lot like h20's. Even  the king we released ate the white flasher/pink hoochie. For whatever reason, we could find the fish but could not get them to eat.

everyone is fishing white flasher/pink hoochie, sometimes changes from non traditional humpy gear will be the ticket. something to think about. the whole white/pink thing is way played out imo. those fish are feeding up on the same things kings/silvers are before they head up the river. none of those things happen to be hot pink, match the hatch, catch fish. :twocents:

:yeah: I like to use a regular green hotspot flasher with a cotton candy coho killer and 16 inch leader. We caught 18  fish in an hour on that in sekiu last week. And it has worked well in the puget sound as well.

We had 4 rods down, stacked off 2 riggers. 1 with that rig, we had different colored kingfishers, coho killers, other colored hoochies. The only reason I mentioned the pink hoochies is because I was surprised a king ate it.

 I know what a glass rod is..........why do you feel the hook up to loss ratio, is different with glass rods?
glass rods tend to flex more, in trolling situations, pulling plugs, ect. The strikes tend to be more swipey or violent. If a fish dosent get a good hold of it it can pull the hook easier with a stiffer graphite rod, also if fighting a fish that isn't hooked well the extra flex of a glass rod can keep the hook from getting pulled out. Humpies tend to be very soft mouthed creatures and are notorious forthe hooks pulling out.

Me & smokepole Jr. boated two pinks at the shipwreck today.  Better get your fishing in during the week, boys.  She's gonna be a zoo this coming weekend.

We got the Sh%$It@ kicked out of us on the way back to Everett.  Wind and tide kicked up at the same time.  Drunk me some sea water and said me a few cuss words.   :yike:

What time did you head in?  Running those beam-to seas this evening from the ferry to the marina was a little on the "sporty" side.

I think it was about 5 pm when we quit.  I should have seen it coming.  Yep we were getting hit with beam seas & trying to jog without getting too far from shore.  I haven't pissed this much seawater since I was up in Bristol Bay back in the 80's.  Took a couple waves that were pretty deep - maybe 5' or more.  Doggone bilge pump quit working at the half way point.  Driving an old Arima Sea Chaser 17 with an Evinrude 70 & that motor never missed a lick.  Took us about an hour to get into the channel & glad to see the dock.  Got two nice pinks in the brine & gonna smoke them tomorrow.

Our fish came in 45 feet.  We fished schools from 30 all the way down to 120.  Just not biting what we were offering (standard humpy gear trolled at slow and slower) last night.

May have seen you, if you were leaving Everett.  I was wondering who in the heck would be heading out in that crud.  Maybe you have a bigger boat.  If you do, that would have been good!

Fishing was slow.  We trolled several hours to get two.  Saw only two other fish netted, but I'm sure there was more.  Nobody we saw was hittin em big.

Don't have a big boat - just 17'er with a good bilge pump  :chuckle:  It actually calmed down for a while while we were fishing, but the wind started to pickup a bit so we started to head in... now that was a bit of a rough ride home once we turned the corner at the ferry dock!

Question...  if the fish are down deep during the heat of the day, say 120-150 feet, and a guy not unlike myself does not have downriggers, how do you get to them?

I don't have any people, so it's okay if you just tell me instead.

Jig 'em up. Take your trout rod or something with braid and plenty of line.....drop it way the heck down and just work it back up. You can have a lot of fun with it. Just make sure to switch out your treble with a super sharp thin shanked hook...I like Owner....also...lighten that drag up...I'm losing more fish than I should pulling hooks.

I would wait till the rest of the river opens tomorrow. That way your options are a little better and the further up the river you go, the thinner the bank crowds get. Was out Saturday, and between all the boats, and bank guys it was slim pickins. Not that there were any fish to catch anyways...

Going to have to look at pics of salmon on wikipedia... probably 20 boats out this evening.  Didnt see any fish caught.  Lots of jumpers south of shipwreck, so I pitched buzzbomb around.  Had one hellacious hit, but couldnt stick the pin.  Lots of bait that school was working - porpoises were even in on the action.  Theres fish in there, but I havent unlocked the "easy limit" combo yet.
Water was exactly the opposite from monday night.  Just a little lumpy south of the ferry, but was glass between Mukilteo and Everett.  Had the throttle pegged across the whole bay to give the boat a little workout.

Haven't decided you if I'm going to hit the local waters or the San Juans on Sat. There are still Kings to catch up North.

So, whose all running out on Saturday?

Not me.  I’ll watch from shore on the weekend and fish mid-week.

Saturday is a good time to get a lawn chair & a six pack of beer & watch the boat launch all day.  One of my favorite past times! :chuckle:

you boat has yet to come up skunked with me in it.  Ling, humpys, crab it doesn't matter I'm just that good!

True.  Don't worry, tho - I'll get you on a good ol' fashioned skunking sooner or later.  It's a specialty of mine  :chuckle:

I was thinking to myself as I was blasting along last night that you of all people would appreciate how smooth that water was!  Took me 5 minutes to cover what it took us half hour on Monday.  Didn't get a single drop of salt water inside the boat on the ride home.

Caught this dink the other evening, had the guard dog along for protection.

Will be out sat, alumaweld stryker with 2 guys napping while the kicker pushes us towards all the other boats.

Just a guy mentioned catching a king with a freedom fin and a couple guys jumped all over him on the radio about it being in a no retention area. He mentioned a few times that it had been released, yet they kept flipping him crap about mandatory release.

Lame.....

The first fish we hooked right off the bat I'm fairly sure was a king.....pinks simply don't pull drag and bend the rod like it did. We never saw it........

We released a 12-14 lb'er off Shipwreck. It was heartbraking. Beauty fish, and wild too.

Looks like I'll be out local on Sat then off to the Juans on Sun. I'll be in the red Jetcraft Discovery 2025, grey top and full of fish. You'll probably see me heading back in with limits by 7am.

:chuckle: I wish, it's been a while since that has happened!

Freedom fin...  :chuckle:

In honor of the other Johnny Cash reference...

"It was early one mornin' and I was balls deep,
while most the rest of you all was fast asleep.
I know what you're thinking, but you ain't right,
I was trolling for salmon just at first light.

I was slipping along running with the tide,
white dodger and pink squids over the side,
When the rod started bouncing like it was tryin' to break free,
down rigger clip popped and the reel began to scream.

Now, I've caught pinks a time or two,
but this kind of action was something new.
I grabbed the rod and my face went pale -
I couldn't tell if it was a fish or a whale.

The battle raged for an hour, it seemed to me,
felt like I was living out the Old Man and the Sea.
I'd lift and pump taking my line back,
but that big ol' fish would turn and take it all back.

'Bout that time he made for the sky,
I was looking right as him and he filled my eye,
with bright chrome slab sides, his back had a purplish look,
No doubt remained I was hooked into a chinook.

Remember, pinks was all I'd ever caught,
and my mind instantly filled up with the thought
of slaps on the back and filets on the grill,
all I had left to do was break it's will.

I found that may not be as easy done as said,
it damn near broke my arm just to turn his head.
I could get him coming just a little ways,
then he'd change his mind and head for the Straits.

Eventually, man bested beast,
and all I could think about was the coming feast.
I could see him rising by the flash of chrome,
I was just minutes from taking my prize fish home.

He came along side, all tuckered out,
I pumped my fist and let out a shout.
Started to lead him into the net,
But you salmon fisherman know what I saw next, I bet.

I work real hard and deserve a break,
but it just wasn't my day, and it was hard to take.
When it comes to salmon, seems I just can't win -
'cause my first ever chinook had him a Freedom Fin!"

So back to the fishing:

Here’s where the fish were this morning.  They were fining the surfaces and jumping at the tide change.  A few boats were doing well, others not so much.  Three teenage boys in a little beatup old Fiberform were cleaning up on them.  55 feet down, pink hoochie, white flasher, trolled slow.   Tomorrow should be awesome.

I've kept the gear in the top 60 all day and caught fish...you can see schools along the surface. However, with mass boats and the sun up high I usually stack gear.....45 and 60, 60 and 80....just work the water column, talk to other boats...that kind of thing.

Fun ride out at am, whoo hoo love getting air borne...
No crabs, someone i think not on accident :chuckle: moved my pot 600yds north from were i dropped it right along with all the others south of shipwreck, but i did gain 1 downrigger ball, 2 releases, 1 flasher, 2 down rigger triangle thingys....
So i am cleaning up on gear this year...
Who trolls in 65ft or less of water with a ton of gear  in the crab pot line? And do they make downrigger braided line instead of cable because there was a bunch of it?

I was out till 1, well i called it quits at noon but had to find my crab pot, cut free the junk and clear the grass from it, no wonder no crabs...
Coffee, it painted the deck and my lap on the way out, but the afternoon it was calming right down...

This morning it was on fire.  My daughter and I had 6 in the boat by 7:00am and limited by 7:30.  We lost more fish than I'm willing to admit to.  Several double hook ups, one broken rod, very dirty boat.

Yesterday the fish were there too, we lost a lot of fish too. I checked the dodger and there was teeth marks in the Smelly Jelly, that explains some of the hits. Sunday we went 7 for 15, all the bites came between 6:30 and 9:00 in the morning. Will be back Saturday morning again, no better way to spend a Birthday than on the water fishing.

I'm wanna know where everyone is getting all their good luck. I fished both days this weekend for at least 5 hours each. And I didn't catch squat. I was in the river watching everyone and their brother hook up, but couldn't make it work for me. I threw jigs, buzz bombs, even some 50/50 Dick Nites. Talk about frustrating.

"HAPPENING RIGHT NOW.......!!!

5 Seiner's just North of Mukilteo.

3 Seiner's just North of the Shipwreck.

And to top it all off, "someone" had a gillnet fishery last night just off of the Shipwreck.

Humpy eggs! The new caviar!

And their excuse! Thin the pinks way down so just enough can spawn. Too many pinks in the river system supposedly pollute and take up space and spawning beds where the endangered runs of chinook and steelhead need to spawn

Lots of boats out there today, Tuesday.  Maybe 75 boats or so at the Shipwreck, just south of Mukilteo.  We arrived late, but still got our lines in the water by 7:30 am.  By 7:50, my son Smokepolejr had boated a nice buck humpy and a 9 lb. coho, trolling at around 60' with a pink spoon called Coho Killer.  I lost a nice fish, then later boated a couple of pinks, one of which was about 7 lbs.

The amazing thing was, nothing on the boat malfunctioned this time.  NO duct tape needed!  And we left by 11:30 to avoid the slop.  Salmon for supper & some for the smoker!  :food:

clearly I am doing something wrong...

Had two riggers out for for 3-4 hours last night and only had one rod pop (no fish on it when I got to it).

I was at the shipwreck.

We must have been too deep.  I was marking fish between 200 and 125 so we had the riggers in those ranges.

We tried pulling coyote spoons with smelly jelly, hoochie rigs behind dodgers.  We even tried one of those little pink squid behind a white flasher.

Going to try again Friday night after work and we will stick to the top 60 feet or so.

It is on today at shipwreck.  I went 4 for 8.  3 in the box by 7, kept longline releasing them until I finally got the 4th at about 8.  Standard gear, standard depths.
Seiners didnt do too much damage, I guess.  None working the area today.

Rob, You're too deep.  In the early morning, we fish 40-45 feet deep.  Around 10 am I caught one fish at 110 feet and then my son got one at 85 at 11 am.  Start shallow & work your way down to 110-125 during he midday.  Depends... last week we were getting them at 85' during the afternoon.  Also, what speed were you trolling?  We like 1 mph 0 2mph going against the tide worked best for us.

Yeah, I think I have been too deep...

I'll start at 40 and stagger down till we hit fish.

As for speed, I'll break out the GPS and see what my speed is next time I am out there.  I have been going about the same speed as the slower of the boats on the water.  My guess was about 1.5 to 2.5 mph.

When you measure speed, are you measuring ground speed or water speed?  i.e. how fast the water is moving past your boat, or how fast you are tracking across the face of the earth?  For example, if I am moving 2.0 mph ground speed, and fighting a direct 1.5 mph current, then my water speed would be 3.5 mph - so would this be too fast?

Typically I have looked at the angle of the Downrigger balls and action of the dodgers as a rough indicator of water speed.

Title: Re: Fishing for pinks by shipwreck right now.
Post by: NWgamehunter on August 21, 2013, 02:54:56 PM
personally i try and forget the speed, tides and all that.. 45 degrees back on the downrigger lines when fishing 150 and above is what i start at.  just an old rule of thumb... mix it up though, and once you start catching, take note of what the angle is. sometimes more or less speed is better, especially between fish species. :twocents:
Title: Re: Fishing for pinks by shipwreck right now.
Post by: Smokepole on August 21, 2013, 03:05:49 PM
I go as slow as I can for pinks.  If I'm against the current, that means I can crawl along at 1 mph ground speed.  With the current you have to go fast enough to keep action on your lure.

Seiners and gillnetters have always fished pinks when they are in. White men get to fish Monday or Tuesday alternate seiners or gill netters. Don't know what Indians do. Yea you can get quite a bunch in one set but it don't happen to often. There was that many because WDFW only opens small areas at a time. Used to work on a seiner in the 80s.

Took some buds out tonight trying to get them some fish.  Nothin' doin. Lots of fish on the surface, but couldn't coax a bite out of them.  Tough evening of fishing, but great weather smooth water.  Looked like non-tribal commercial gillnetters were netting just north of the ferry this afternoon.
Title: Re: Fishing for pinks by shipwreck right now.

Speed judged by a GPS is pretty irrelevant.  It's all about how fast your flasher rotates, which is a function of water speed, current speed and depth.  You can be going 3mph over ground and your flasher isn't even rotating.  If you're concerned you're not going the right speed, (i) go at least fast enough that your flasher actually rotates, and (ii) use a spoon (on a longer leader) instead of a hootchie.

I'm mostly running a white glow/UV flasher with a 3" white or white/green spoon.  This morning, south of shipwreck, with two rods we got two ocean coho, one resident coho, one nate king (released, of course), and three pinks.  Also lost a few, should have had limits by 10.  They're here!  Including the coho!  Days like today I shake my head and laugh, we live in a great place.

They aren't gonna pop the rigger. If your rod isn't fully loaded up you won't see the bite. Its rare we even get a king to pop the clip. Most just bounce the rod.

They aren't gonna pop the rigger. If your rod isn't fully loaded up you won't see the bite. Its rare we even get a king to pop the clip. Most just bounce the rod.

If you set the clips right they will. 12" Kokanee pop the clips in our boat.
are you running 11" flashers for the kokes?

Sometimes.

You are setting your line too far in the clip if it does not pop off with a solid hit/hookup...anyways.
Out yesterday, 1 nice king first thing in the am (dang), then a coho using a new technique, then another, lost 5 boated 4, stopped trying for humpies..... a few crab and no new gear since my pot was still were i set it  :chuckle:

Tried setting it closer and couldn't find a happy medium between popping on a fish and getting a false release. Of the 25+ kings we hooked in 9 and 10 this summer I can only recall 2 popping the clip. Might have something to do with the speed we troll :dunno:

I like my releases tight so I don’t get false trips and the hook is driven deep when the fish hits.   It takes an aggressive strike to pop the release and pinks rarely strike hard enough to do any more than wiggle the end of the rod.

The nets are back.  There was a small gill net set in shallow water off the shipwreck yesterday and a purse seiner lurking about a mile north.

I admit I had a few words with the smaller blue seiner boat and his shrew of a boat mate. Sunday they set their net and drug mine and another guys three crab pots about 500 yards. Didn't even get a sorry. When I asked them not so politely why they couldn't keep their s.....stuff.......outta my s.....stuff the bi........gal said they could have just kept it. The 2 min conversation went down hill from there.

I'm done for the year fishing the humpies....I'll get out for silvers next month after I'm done elk hunting.

Man that chapped my butt.

I think we are about done with the Pinks too, have landed I think 25+ fish. Got some in a brine to smoke after work today. It was fun, just move away from the bulk of the boats and it was pretty good fishing most of the time. We did better staying South of the Ship Wreck, 450 - 500 feet of water 55' down on the riggers was the magic numbers every time we were out.

Yeah, I remember your boat you came up on our left side. Since we troll so slow most boats troll past us. Sunday we sat down on them and the action was non stop for a good hour in the early light. 26 feet of cable and the  riggers were just going down and right back up. We hit 6 fish in under 20 minutes, 4 in the boat. I am surprised how many boats troll against the tide. We troll with it, so when we made the run that is probably where we went was back up current. This is from Sunday we fished 4 hours, landed 9.   This was my Nieces first Salmon trip and she helped get these 2 fish to the boat.

I am very curiou, if you were to pull someone else's pots and get caught you would at the least be cited for it. Can you not press charges on them for doing the same? If your hearewasthere first you should be in tthe right here.

The answer is I don't know. What I do know is I fished and crabbed that area 4 weekends in a row, both Sat and Sun.........I didn't have a single problem with a pot from any recreational fisherman of any race, age, heritage, or gender. Not one of my pots was moved or touched and 3 out of 4 weekends they were left overnight from Sat to Sun. Then, the seiners show up...not the big boats mind you.....the single man operation boats. That is when I have the problems. Not a sorry, not a consideration, not an iotta of care that my gear was dragged and almost lost.

That is the attitude that causes problems and gets people fired up. Next time I'll cut my own pot free.

I saw that guy in the blue boat on saturday, he was right in the area with a bunch of crab pots around. He showed up about 10am i think, and the pots were allready there. I think he was also tribal so i wonder what difference that would make if he kept your pots because they were in his "right to fish" area?

You are right on all accounts Buck.....the pots were there first....he set his gear with complete disregard to anyone else, tribal or not, that was already fishing the area. He could have easily set down current and avoided the issue. However....that is not how some do it.

I saw a picture this morning that my buddy took right before the storm hit. Visibility went to zero he said and the wind was nasty. I think staying in the marina tied to the dock was much better for the nerves.   :chuckle:

I actually boat bummed on Rippers ride today.  Sweet setup. Ended up with three nice coho, a bunch of pinks. I'll probably never drag a pink squid around again after the way we slaughtered the humpies on coho gear today...
Thanks to the skipper and his fam for letting me tag along - learned a lot today.

Pinks are ridiculously easy out there still.  There are still a few that are bright with loose scales but most have started to hump, color up and put on extra slime.

I noticed that too.  Probably canned my last batch of pinks on Sunday, unless a fresh bunch of fish pushes in.

Why do you can them?  Is there an advantage over vac sealing?

A little bit of "prepper" in me, I guess.  It'll keep in a pantry without electricity for a long time.   I just like canned fish, too.  Probably ate more canned kokanee than tuna growing up.  I got plenty of walleye and ling cod vacuum sealed and frozen, too.

We fished tween Picnic Pt & Shipwreck yesterday evening. Not 5 minutes with lines wet wet had a big take down. Good fight, but had to released a nice 12# native king  :bash:
Next fish was about 40 min later a nice 6# Coho buck at 115'.
Last fish hit hard about 7pm. A solid 10# coho hen. Was a good nite  :IBCOOL:
Water was a bit choppy on the ride out from Everett to Mukilteo ferry then the water was glass  8)

Nice. I’m loading the boat right now for trip out in the am; I’d be happy with few 9 pounders.
