Title: Best boots for $140-$200?
Post by: halfpipe88 on August 07, 2013, 12:47:16 PM
What are the best boots you've had in the price range of $140-$200?  My Irish Setters are worn out and I want to get some broke in before hunting seasons starts.  They've been great.  I bought them for $180 4 years ago and they're priced at $209 now so I'm looking at my options.  I'd love your opinions!

If you can swing an extra $50, Danner Acadias will last you half a decade or more. They aren't the most comfortable boot but they're waterproof and there's no limit on what I can carry out on account of my boots. Definitely try them on to see if they work for you. I wouldn't wear them if I weren't able to add an insole. They have little cushioning without one.

I payed 150$ for my Danner Nobo Mid GTX's, Coated them in multiple layers of Obenauf's They have been great boots thus far. Climbed St Helens with them

Colby -

I have always used Danner's in the past with great success.  I am considering spending a bit more this time and going with Kenetreck, they are nearly twice that price but many people swear buy them.  I have the catalog if you want to look at it.  Or you can find them all online, a lot with great reviews.

If you watch the sales you can usually get the Meindl Denali's for a little over that.  They are a great boot.

I would probably look at Cabelas boots, for that kind of price range. They have some good deals in the bargain cave right now. They also have a special free shipping deal for clothing and footwear orders over $49.

Here's an option, it's not on sale but only $130. And like I said, also go to the online bargain cave and see what they have.

In my experience the cabelas boots are good but not as tough as others and generally they only last a couple seasons.  When that was all I could afford I was a regular user of them.  Only buy what you can afford but if you can afford a little more I would look at Danner and if you really can throw some cash at it, the Kenetrek.

I haven't tried on many cabelas brand boots that I like.  I did buy a set of their whitetail stalker boots that I like but they're insulated and I'm looking for uninsulated.  Their insulated boots started leaking like crazy after about 8 outings with them.  I sent them back to Cabelas with a letter though and they sent me a brand new pair.  I was happy about that but would prefer they perform flawless the first time.
I know a several people that swear by the Danner pronghorns...

I ordered a pair of the new danner "high ground" hunting boots and they are waiting for me at the factory store. Can't get there till tomorrow tho. Tried a pair on last week in D width and they were snug, the EE should be perfect. 8 inch high, super light and in camo w/leather trimmings, uninsulated. Billed as a cross between an athletic shoe and a hunting boot. Should be perfect for early season. $150.00!

I wore the pronghorns for a few seasons. They are comfortable, but don't last like my Acadias do. You get what you pay for sometimes.

I'm on my second pair of pronghorns. I dont know if its because im picky or not, but nothing seems to fit just right like a danner. I gotta say I feel the first pair I had was a lot more comfortable to wear than these ones, they aren't terrible but they aren't all the way broken in either.

I truly love Danner Pronghorns, very comfortable and waterproof from day 1.  But with between 35-45 days of hunting each year they last me one year and one year only before they are walked out/leak.  I have a pair of the Meindl Ibex's that have been hell to break in, but now at about 3 years old they are broken in failry well enough to put them to the real test this fall packing meat.

Not a name or a boot you hear of likely but they have been excellent for me, Vasque Wasatch GTX, regular price they run around $180.00, bought mine on sale for $115.00, most comfortable boot I've owned, Lightweight and Gore-Tex to boot.

I believe i bought my danner tfx (now gtx) hunters in  '03, the first year they came out. On 9 day hunts i probably averaged 3.5 to 4 miles a day over varied terrain. Conservatively thats 283 miles over 9 years on just that hunt. I wore them tho for most of modern deer and elk as well, weather permitting. They failed me this summer while scouting. Probably have at least 600 miles on them. Best part about them was the comfort and I neved had to
break them in. They were ready to go right out of the box and I'm
EE.  Beats waiting 3 years for somebody elses boot to get comfy IMO?

Would echo above recommendation about Sierra Trading Post.  You can get Asolo's and other top notch gear/boots for bottom dollar.  If you can scrounge the coin, I would recommend the Schnees Bearthooth.  Very little break in and comfortable right out of the box.  These coupled with the Latrhop and Son's insole make for a really comfortable boot and have served me well.

Meindl Cabelas "Perfekt" These boots are beyond amazing. They will not leak GARENS. Also, I seriously feel like these boots propel me when I walk, it's nuts. Save up $260 and use these boots forever, and it they do crap out after 4 or 5 years, TAKE THEM BACK AND GET NEW ONES. lifetime warranty.  And trust me on this one, STAY away from any danner hunting boots. Garbage

Keep an eye on Sierra Trading Post if you're on a budget. They've got a great return policy, if you're not happy with the buy.

If you're going to be putting lots of miles on your boots and or carrying a load, buy the best fitting boots that you can find with plenty of medial and lateral support. I'm a flat-footer and have a hell of a time finding a pair that give me enough medial support. I finally picked up a pair of Asolo full leathers in wide that are working great.

Also, foot bed inserts like Superfeet can make all the difference in the world. I usually go for the green inserts for the most support. They feel a little wierd at first b/c the arch support is closer to the heel that other footbeds, but that's where your navicular bone is and where you need the support. Put them in your shoes for a couple of hours here and there to break them and your feet in slowly.

I had a pair spring a leak after 2 or 3 seasons, and they exchanged them no questions asked. The lady said they could be 20 years old and if your not happy, they will take them back.

Good thing I kept my receipt! After sidehilling in the mountains for 2days the boot had a crease that put pressure on my ankle and it hurt so bad I couldn't wear them. I borrowed someone's backup pair that was a size too big for me  and they were still better than my new Danner Pronghorns. I returned them as soon as I got back and traded for some Keens. I won't be going with those again! Almost ruined my 1 1/2 week hunting trip!

Thats a good boot deal!  I see they are the 200g.  I wear the 600g because the suede type leather of the 200g does poorly for me as I get concrete on them at times.  Dries out quickly and will crack.  880 600g does way better.

If you are looking for uninsulated, Danner Pronghorns do have pretty good reviews.

I have been using mine for 9 years and they are still going strong.  I replaced the inserts this year and I bet they last another 9 years.  Very comfortable, lightweight and have great ankle support when walking in nasty rocks.

I wear a size 10, but go up a size for comfort for most of my shoes and boots and these were pretty tight over the top at a listed size 10. Not to sure a 11 would fit the way I like em. Length is good, just the area at the end of the laces was tight.

Used to be a Danner fan.  Then they went chinese on me and fell apart, twice.  Only good Danner left are the ones made in USA.  Funny thing is my redwings are chinese made but quality is still there.  Go figure?

got some used Lathrop and Sons GTX extreme for sale.  In great shape with lots of miles left in them.  Waterproof, 10", very durable.  Size 11.5.  $250.  Almost $400 new.

I'm size 9

Do you want my Irish Setters?  Seriously.  I bought a couple years ago but they were slighlty too big and I always got hot spots on my heels.

Are you asking to get rid of them for a price or just wanting to get rid of them?  I would love to take them off your hands!

Sent you back a PM

Been reading this thread and I've been looking in the same range. I really want to get a great deal but can't see buying a boot without trying them on. Any recommendations around Everett marysville to try on or buy boots?
Work and more in everett off broadway by the stadium, arlington hardware had a few good options as of yesterday. If you want selection drive to coastal in mt. Vernon. They have almost every boot you can imagine.

Asolo boots.  Maybe not a traditional hunting boot but in my opinion they meet the needs for hunting. Waterproof , great support, comfortable, etc. plus Asolo boots are light and at the end of the day that makes a difference

I have a pair of pronghorns I just got about a month ago because my other pair of pronghorns started to leak but after about a mont my new pronghorns leak :bash:

Had a buddy burn through 2 pairs of the Pronghorns over the course of 1 week during a Montana Archery hunt. I have to say that I have been amazingly happy with my Cablelas Meindl boots. Spend a few more bucks and your feet and back will love you. Don't ruin a trip you've waited all year to do by buying a cheap pair of boots. :twocents:

Some have mentioned Irish Setter. I just noticed Cabelas has a nice pair of all-leather, MADE IN THE USA, Irish Setter boots on sale for $210, regular price is $320. Only problem is they only have sizes 8 and 9. I'm tempted to order a pair of 9's. Problem is I sometimes need a 9 1/2. Don't really need another pair of boots either. But I sure like the looks of these. Gore tex lined as well, and uninsulated, which is what I prefer.

I must of got a lemon for pronghorns, I've been very happy with them the last 3 seasons and they've never sprung a leak. It did take a little while to break them in. I'd imagine I've had more time in the woods this fall than the mass majority of people commenting on this thread and they've held up just fine. I got a new pair of uninsulated ones for Christmas that are very comfy right out of the box.

denali that are not broke in yet.  how many days does it take to break these things in?  I like them but they are blocky and don't bend much.   cant complain bout the price cuz I got them for $200 when they are $280.   mike w
