Title: Rim Rock FIRE Closures!
Post by: et1702 on August 12, 2013, 10:09:47 AM
Fire started by lightening on Friday night.  It's near Conrad Meadows on PineGrass side of bowl.  It's between 1040 and 1070 rds near rim.  The 1000 rd is closed above 1000/1040 intersection.  25 acres burned on Saturday, jumped to 300 acres by Sunday night.

There are three fires up in manashtash as of yesterday per the DNR guy we talked to. Two near tamarac springs and one in whiskey flats.

I saw Auhtanum Fire crews heading up to Conrad Meadows fire Saturday afternoon.

Today, they are upgrading to Interagency Type III Incident Management Team to manage the Conrad Complex. Participating agencies include US Forest Service, WA State Department of Natural Resources, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and Yakima County.

Fire behavior was "aggressive" on Sunday, even w/some local rain Saturday evening and cooler temps Sunday.

Driest I've ever seen it at Rim Rock.  Definitely has the potential to blow up into very big fire pretty fast.

Couldn't fit it all in one screen shot.

My older brother went from the Mile Marker 28 fire, to a fire in Sisters,OR. Came home Saturday night and was deployed out today at 3am to this fire at RimRock.   Busy time of year.

It was quite a storm Friday night! I was camped up there and it was right on top of me for about a half hour.

We were up there as well.  It made for an interesting hour or so.  Look like they changed it to the conrad lake fire now.  Raul, if you get any updates from your brother, please pass them along.  I will be watching this one closely...

Just got word that FS has closed 1000 rd up to CM, plus they have closed 1204 and 1205 roads up to Pinegrass area.  Looks like they are starting to mobilize people up 1204 and 1205 rds to Pinegrass Ridge area to fight fire once it tops out into Goat Rocks Wilderness area.

We were headed that way to do some 4 wheeling this weekend and kick it at Clear Lake. Is this going to be doable?

We were up last weekend during the light show. Watched about 20 horse trailers come down from 11PM - 2PM Friday night. Then atched the firefighers heading up the 1000 road on Sunday.
Hope the cams stay out of the fire and the area doesn't get shut down for archery.
I'll look for your updates.

I just talked to the ranger station. The 1000 road is shut down at from the lake up. They did evacuate all the campers up there like you saw.
You can still get up by the 1202 or 1203 and take the 550 to the Jeep trails. The jeep trails are all open and you can get to the 1000 road still in many places even on the 4w619 to Conrad.

Although its not advised. She said if it blows there going to evacuate all fire crews and safety personal and you could be on your own if trouble flares up. There are a total of 12 fires going on right now...

Hoping this rain makes it over the mountain. Looks like some will.

Awesome trip, no smoke, all 4x4 trails open. Even stopped and talked to Gasman and crew. Fire crews had no issues with us up the 1000 rd a ways.

Thanks Pete for commin up to Lost lake to make sure we made it back! Severed the leaf springs on the rt rear and had to come along the rear axle in place and remove the driveline to limp it back the 15 to 18 miles.

Rimrock 4 x 4 trails are no joke!  ;)

Attached is a picture of the large fire above Conrad on Saturday morning.  I counted 9 individual fires,  They were pooring water all day Saturday.  By Sunday afternoon it looked like they had it much more under control.  Should be no issue by the 3rd based on what I saw.

Looks like the fire may get some rain. Also expect some of the roads and the peninsula to be opened up around labor day.

Where did you get info.  I was up there this weekend and talked to a couple of the fire guys and they still have 1000, 1204 and 1205 roads closed, posted and personel stationed at the end of the roads to prevent access.

They are pulling resources from the Conrad fire and sending them to the Manastash fire.  Up to 600 people at one point over at RR.  Now only about 150.  The fire is on the west side of Conrad Meadows near Conrad and Phantom Lakes.  So, 1000 rd to Conrad is closed, plus 1204, 1205 and 1241 rds, plus roads by airstrip (i.e., peninsula).  They have entire Pinegrass area closed as they are still worried that it will jump up on top and come burning down Pinegrass.  They have about 25% containment, mostly on the south edge.  The north and northeast sides of the fire are up in the Goat Rocks wilderness and they are just letting it burn, and it was burning to the South and to the North-Northeast by Phantom Lake this weekend.  About 1100 acres so far.

The people I talked to this weekend said the plan is to just monitor the fire and let winter rain/snow put it out.  This is what fire management team told them all at 6am Saturday morning briefing before turning them loose to work.  Plus, they don't plan to let anyone into Conrad or Pinegrass areas for hunting, until the fire is OUT.  Since they aren't actively fighting fire any longer, that could be a very long time (unless we get a LOT of rain soon).

They said Lost Lake area (i.e., 1202 and 1203 rds) and area near Clear lake (i.e., 1201 rd) are open, but that's it and they don't expect anything will change before or during the archery season.

I think we all need to call Naches District and raise a rukus about Conrad Fire access.  Even if they keep area near fire closed for camping, they should still allow access for hunting.  Move the closed portions of the roads farther up and closer to the fire.  If it flares up again or gets away from them, I think most of us are bright enough to know when to get outta there, if we need too.

I heard that from camp. Also the rain did help. The fire isn't putting out a lot of smoke.

Good news, hope they get some more rain this week (w/o lightning)!

Thanks,

Yes, it's a big unit, but Conrad (1000 rd) and Pinegrass (1204 and 1205 rds) are closed from Tieton Rd to the top.  Takes out about 50% of the unit and a lot of good hunting opportunity.

The question has been asked of the FS (i.e., can we walk or Mt. bike into closed areas).  The fire management team have not provided definitive answer yet.  BTW, I agree w/your sentiments about Conrad.

I suspect there are a lot of us and many others not on this forum that had no intention to go anywhere near Conrad who find themselves scrambling because the ROADS they use to get to their traditionally succesful areas are closed as are their campsites. There's no question one can go to other places within or outside of RR (unless one has a bull tag), we're just kind of scrambling around trying to get a feel for what to plan for. Especially when we plan and look forward to this ALL YEAR LONG........................like most of us on this site I expect.
