Went out today and ran across two piles pretty much right next to each other that looked pretty fresh to me. Tracked the bear through freshly trampled grass into a 4' tall tunnel through reprod. I tracked him/her until the reprod closed in so much that I could only get through with a drawn pistol. I decided to back out knowing that I wasn't in the best position to confront a bear being on my hands and knees with a 10mm. I think I was hot on his trail but after backing out I wondered just how close I could have been. The scat was really soft and full of hair which you can't see really well in the pics. Any thoughts from you bear scat experts on freshness and possible size of the bear. It was a semi sunny area about 78 degrees

Where Was It. I'll Need To See It To Tell.

that's people poop there's no bears there. :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
Ummm it was C-Post. LOL
-
A good "rule of thumb" is to stick your finger in it, if you pull your finger out and there is poo under the fingernail it's really fresh
if there is no poo under the fingernail, but some tidbits are stuck to your finger it's pretty fresh
if your finger comes out clean then it's old
-
Hmm looks like the bear ate a fred meyers employee? :dunno:
-
Ya I knew I was asking for it posting a poo pic. Ok let's get the jokes over with because I've heard them all and posted them myself before.
-
Temperature? Aroma? Soft and squishy or firm and crusted over?
-
Guessing the pic was taken about 6pm. I'd say the poo is about 5 1/2 hrs old.
Yes you prolly interrupted his business and you made him drop two small piles.
Reallly fresh..

I was serious, you know your on a hot trail when the poo is still 100 degrees

Joking aside, all the bear crap I've seen is way blacker and more chunkier. It's ususally filled with berries and or fur. Not seeing any of that. I starting to side with madmack76, it looks kind of like human droppings... but I'm no expert.

Pic was taken around 3 pm. Soft and squishy but not warm. I know... It's hard to say. I was thinking it was a few hours old
-
Definitely not human. More piles like that in the area. It did have some seeds and hair in it.
-
so you did stick your finger in it :chuckle:
-
Bear crap can be different colors. It begins to get black when it hits the air but takes time.

Maybe the human just ate a squirrel who had been eating nuts?

In what again? :chuckle:

As dry as it has been it looks pretty fresh to me. Did you break it up? Any bone shards? Nice find...I'd be hunting the area.
-
fresh crap is moist to wet on the outside and covered with bugs...........if its already dry on the surface, its been awhile...........
-
Thanks H2O....plan on going back for sure but it's so thick in there I'm not sure I'll find him. But that's where they are right now in the thick stuff. At least in the areas I hunt
-
Get in there and hunt slow....then, hunt even slower. Keep the wind right and if he is anywhere in there you will hear him....then go shoot him.

I thought it looked like a Boeing employee myself

seems like a good opportunity for predator calling.

Maybe the best bear turd joke on hunt-wa yet. Not that I have anything against Boeing employees just laughing so hard I'm worried I'll wake the wife.

Now that is the first pile of poo I could actually believe was bigfoot or Rosie O'Donnell. If it is bear I'd bet someone is baiting or there is a dead elk in the area. That's looking like a lot of protein for this time of year. Did you see ravens in the area?
