I have a bone to pick with the Westport Charter Boat Association. I would like to see them allow private boat fishermen & women to inter the daily derby's. It's really discriminating against the private boat owners to be left out of the money.
With this last king I caught with Buckhorn2 I would have won (so far) about $800.00 :bash: (of course I would have split it with Del, and my neighbor Craig), and be in the running for the yearly prize of $2500.00.
I have caught many big fish that would have been in the running for the prize money. Like lingcod that tipped the scale at 48 pounds, and seabass that weighted 15 pounds ( I boated 5 of them in one day). Of course this has not all been this year, but within the last 5 years.
I would tend to think that the money that the private boat folks would spend, might increases the prize money, or increases what ever the money goes for.
I'm going to talk with the association about allowing private boat owners to be allowed to buy a ticket for the daily derby. If they still say NO then maybe a court date might be in order.

Problem is its much harder to control cheating if they open it up. With the charters they have several witnesses to verify a legal catch. :dunno:

I would figure from the entry fees. I think it would be fair to even charge the private boat people an extra dollar to cover the expenses.

Illwaco doesn't seem to have a problem with it. To them we are all fishermen/women

I hear ya but the truth hurts sometimes, just ask the guy that lost his entire anchor setup the other day, there are dishonest people everywhere, even among fisherman/women. :twocents:

:yeah:
Especially when you throw in the Cash prize influence.
Where does the prize money come from now?
I've got little to no Westport experience. Does everyone on the charter boats pay in to the contest?

I hear you, we had a halibut this year that would have taken it. Mabey someone can suggest they run a side pot for non charters, but hey, I can barley afford to fill up my boat so I dought I would enter any way!
Took this clip off the Westport Charter Boat association web page.
The Westport Charterboat Association has been sponsoring Fishing Derbies for over fifty years now. In the early years they covered a week-end. Today, the Derby is on every day of the season.
Before and after salmon season, the Derby is operated on a weekly basis. A cash prize up to $500.00, equivalent to half the derby ticket sales proceeds for the week, is paid out for the biggest Lingcod, Blackcod, or Cabezon of the week. During the Halibut Directed season, the Halibut prize is a $500 daily prize with a $10 ticket. The Lingcod derby continues weekly.
During the Salmon season the Derby is operated on a daily basis with prizes up to $500.00 for the largest Salmon and a weekly prize of up to $500 for the largest Lingcod of the week.
An Annual Prize of $2,500 is paid out for the largest Chinook Salmon, $1,500 for the largest Coho Salmon and Lingcod, $1,000 each is paid out for the largest Halibut, and Albacore Tuna.
Derby entry is only $5.00 and tickets are sold at every Charter Service and at the Derby Booth. When you check in, ask for more specific details. Derby ticket purchases are limited to people fishing on licensed charter boats. Derby proceeds are split between prizes and funding the association.

The CBA wants to run a CBA derby, so be it.
You want to force this private group to change their rules so you can join the derby? Wow.
Run your own derby.

If they still say NO then maybe a court date might be in order.
Are you serious.....really ?? unreal >:(
-
Yup...That's what I was wondering/getting at.
If the Charter Boat Association sponsors the charter boat contest, then I can completely understand why the charter boat contest is limited to charter boat customers. Not sure where, why or how any of this would justify a court date.
:dunno:

Guess I didnt read the entire OP, that would be pretty lame to try and take them to court over something like that.

You've said more than a mouth full there. In anything there are cheats, and people who pride themselves on cheating. One way to cover the ticket cheating would be to maybe, have a time stamp on the ticket from lets say the day before the derby, or by 8:00am the day of.

never heard of a 15 lbs sea bass state record is 10lbs. Pretty hard to believe that you have caught 5 that are 5lbs over the state record. Are you talking about black bass?
-
Why not have a derby for private boat fisherman. Start one, and sell tickets.

If I would have know that, then maybe my name would be in the states books, a time or so. But they sure ate good

That would be a good idea if I lived on the coast  Maybe when I retire, and move down there. But then having to deal with the state.
do you have a picture of one of those 15lb sea bass. I have been chasing that state record for 17 years and have never even seen one close.

No, I sure don't, but I wish I did now :bash: And before anyone says "Without pic's it never happened",, if it wasn't for buckhorn2 I wouldn't have a pic of my king from this last trip.
Were have you been fishing? The coast has a lot of big fish still.
i have fished every port on the coast but mainly la push. There is no 15lb sea bass in Washington. Unless you are a better fisherman than anyone else has ever been or your scale is broke. I have caught thousands and thousands of bass over 200 this weekend alone. And I don't believe there is a 15lb sea bass in Washington. I am not trying to start a fight, but those fish never weigh out at what you think they do on a certified scale. That's why I wanted to see a picture. If anyone has a pic of a sea bass over 10.25 I would love to see it. Tony don't take this personal I call bull on all of my buddies to. Ben

There ARE definitely 15 lb. sea bass in WA because I have seen one caught

There a lot of local business that pay the money for the derby it does;nt just come from charter ticket sales. I think Brady;s is one of the big cash business people who pay for the biggest salmon. I don't really have any say about the charter derby other than us taking our boys to the dock in the mornings. There are some pictures in old papers and also new beach articles showing the big derby winners and some of those were caught by sport fisherman one was of Dick Deveraux who won the derby and named his boat the derby Dick people local remember that and if you see pictures of three people holding salmon his is the big one in the middle. As far as Tony goes I had a great time fishing with him and his friend and so far his salmon is the biggest one weighed so far at the charter boat weigh station. This site is getting to be so critical a lot of people have quit posting pictures because of the reaction from people over pounds;inches or score anyway you look at it myself included.
