I need an all around gun!!
I have, 300 rum, 30-06, .22, .32 winchester..
I want something cheap to shoot, I will be shooting alot.
Coyotes, speedgoats, prairie dogs, those big coyotes. And so on
I wanna carry one gun at all times, what would you buy??
-
Wish I had my .280 back!!!!
-
25-06
-
Probably a bolt action 30-06 with a 3-9 power scope. Thinking something with a synthetic stock that you don't mind getting beat around a little, and probably a leupold vx-II.
-
AR in 6.8 SPC, have to reload to make it cheap though, if you can find componenets. Have fun looking for something new.
-
.223 or .22-250 if you want an everyday coyote gun. I'd go .243 or .260/7-08 if you want something for coyotes, and good longer range speed goat or deer gun.
You might want to pick up a rimfire (22 mag or 17 HMR) for ground squirrels and other varmits.
-
.243 or .270.........
-
Looking at what you already have I'd say a .223/5.56 would fit right in. Or maybe a lever action 30/30 so you can play old west cowboy? :)
-
Savage Weather Warrior model 116 chambered in .270 win. (270 ammo should be easy to find and reasonably priced.)
-
A bolt action 243 would be perfect.
-
Now your just rubbing it in. ;) :chuckle:

:yeah:
-
243, 25-06, 260
-
Over and Under 243 - 20 guage. Fits on the horse or in the truck nice and you can kill anything with it.
-
Oh Man! Get the MINI-14 AKA Ranch Rifle. They are a blast and tough. :twocents:
-
you need a 22-250, my friend!
but a .243 would work, too...
-
6.5x284 Duh !
-
Looking at the list of things you want to shoot with one rifle I'd say the .270 will give the most versatility and have good knock down for the larger stuff still. Just my opinion.
-
Model 88 in .308 would work perfect
-
I was impressed with the 22-250 round
-
Not the cheapest to shoot, but if you reload its not horrible. .257wby mag. Personally I've been wanting a .264win mag for a long time now.
-
Wood stock, Ruger, .243
Leupold fixed 4x scope.
-
AK
-
6.5x284 Duh !
Coach, you letting me borrow yours??
-
I'd look at a .264 Win Mag or .25-06 or .257 Wby mag.
-
This would fit the bill:

.243 OR .264.

I'm curious why some are saying the 264 Win. Mag? How is it cheap to shoot?
Not only that, but recoil is a little much for something you want to shoot a lot.
-
when i here "ranch rifle".....the mini 30 comes to mind.
-
Remington model 700 in 223 or 243. For very cheap prices you can do almost anything with them. And all kinds of parts are available. If he can shoot speed goats and Wyoming with the 223 I would lean to the 223 for cost ammunition and variety. And if they're not legal then I go to the 243 again lots of writing ammunition and not too expensive. I would go up in the scope department tool 4.5 x 14 with maybe mildot for good calibrated long-range shots.

Another really good rifle for this I think would be an M1A/M14. The 7.62 round would be a little much on prairie dog, but it would work great on all those other critters. Plus it is a blast to shoot and is rather cheap to shoot a lot.

Springfeild Socom. Not So Cheap To Shoot Anymore.

This would be my Ranch gun

👍👍👍
-
Shoot I would give you a 243 if I can hunt antelope with you
-
.243......I reload 100gr nosler partitions for about $20 a box.....half the cost buying federal premiums with them....so if you went with a different and smaller grain bullet it would be real cheap to shoot and its a real flat shooting rifle and big enough for deer if need be
-
Like others have said a bolt action .243 would be my choice or a .270
-
Stainless all weather bolt gun in .223 with a sturdy scope. If you handload go same gun in 22-250.
-
Cz 527. .223, or a rem. model 7 in .243
-
I'd look at a .264 Win Mag or .25-06 or .257 Wby mag.
I am a .25-06 fanatic and the .257 Wby is an absolute stud but...
they aren't cheap.
.243 in youth size or a .22 mag is what I'd go for.
-
A bolt action 243 would be perfect.

I thought RT was looking for something cheap to shoot? :dunno:
-
Just don't buy anything pretty or you wont have it with you all the time............another vote for .243
-
RT sent you all on a wild goose chase cause nothing is cheap to shoot anymore. :chuckle: May I suggest a nice high powered air rifle.

:yeah:
Or maybe a slingshot...... 8)
-
My :twocents: is the .270 in synthetic. I picked up a remington .700 for cheap when it was on sale and it can take some abuse.
-
.243 in Savage with accutrigger is on my mind... Oh and my buddy is letting me take his AR in .450 to the ranch!!!!
-
A bolt action 243 would be perfect.
-
Judge rifle. I shoot 3" .410 slugs and they are sweet. -5.8" at 100 yds. 1800fps ....I know it is hard to believe. And then add the versatility of bird shot and .45 cowboy rounds makes it great for around home
-
Ruger mini 14.
-
Savage 99 in .243
-
Ruger mini 14.
Remember he'll be hunting antelope as well. .223 might be "enough" for pronghorn but even if it's legal in Wyoming, .243 would handle 'em much better.
-
RT, when do you plan to select a caliber and rifle?
-
RT, when do you plan to select a caliber and rifle?
When he takes my never used 25-06 off my hands for a partial trade on a WY ranch elk hunt next year. :chuckle:
-
I've got the savage 99 in .243 and it is a sweet gun. I love the lever action and the .243 is easy to get ammo for as well as reload. When I was in Wyoming, the .243 was seen as a good all-around caliber good for animals up to mule deer.
-
Oh and my buddy is letting me take his AR in .450 to the ranch!!!!
Highly effective ! :chuckle:
-
How could it be anything but the Ruger Mini-14, given the weapons you listed as already having and your intended use for this?
-
Howa ranchland, of course! Great rifle and it's even called a ranch rifle. In .243 it's good up to elk.
-
LEVER ACTION.
-
My Ruger GSR has become my favorite "ranch rifle", replacing all others.
-
Id say 220 swift but you said cheap to shoot so yhats out id go with a 243 you can shoot the light weight bullet for soft skin critters and up the weight for deer speed goats and elk
-
RT, when do you plan to select a caliber and rifle?
Going shopping saturday...

Rt...I think you need two rifles.....one for deer/lopes/yotes....something in a "2"......257 roberts, .280 rem......then something bigger for the elk.....
-
Wish I had my .280 back!!!!
I've got a .280 I might trade for the right gun.
-
Rt...I think you need two rifles.....one for deer/lopes/yotes....something in a "2"......257 roberts, .280 rem......then something bigger for the elk.....

Yes, the .300 Rum will always be my elk gun..
-
Classic .257 with some pretty little handloads.....I can see it now.....suble pop....lope just falls over.
-
a .223 really fits the bill of your requirements and you are lacking in the fast shooting small caliber area of your arsenal. The mini 14 is a great ranch rifle and the last one I owned was a great shooter out to 250-300 yards. A bolt action 22-250 would be another thought but if you are going to be putting a lot of rounds down range you cant go wrong with a .223.
-
When I worked in Wyoming I would say, hands down, the most common ranch truck rifle was a bolt action .243, followed by .270 and .30-06. .308 is another good option, you can shoot cheap military surplus fmj at varmints. My personal vote would be a Remington 700 .243 with a fixed 6 power scope.

There was an original model Ruger M77 in .243 for sale on here not long ago. I have the same rifle and shoot it more than anything else.

Congrats on the .280 RT, it's not too much different from your 06, but there is something about the caliber that draws me in as well.
