Title: My First Buck
Post by: hogsniper on October 23, 2008, 08:09:42 PM
Hey everyone,
This is hogsniper's girlfriend, Jenna.  I figured since I just posted the pics of his and his dad's buck, I had to post the pictures of my first buck too  :).  Afterall, that was part of the reason it took so long since we were hunting from daylight until dark for the past 7 days!

Initially I thought finding a buck would be easy...we saw tons of horned trees, big tracks all over, and I had the best hunter as my personal guide ;) After a couple days of scoping out clear cuts and hunting his local honey holes, I decided to take the rest of the week off work and we headed to the Eastside in hopes of getting another Muley where he and his dad shot theirs. Of course I figured since he and his dad got their bucks the first day, we could just hike in to the same spot and I could get mine. Driving over we saw deer all over in the fields and a 4x4 right down the road from the cabin.  I was super excited!!! So the next morning we got up at 4am and hiked miles and miles without seeing any bucks at all. Justin spotted some deer on the next ridge but they were just does...we also saw 4 Whitetail does on our way out.  We didn't go home empty handed though...a nice big grouse made the mistake of showing himself in the road so Justin had to take the shot.

Since the moon and weather were not cooperating we headed back to the Westside to take another chance at the local honey holes.  Again, we hiked our butts off and waited patiently in clear cuts and luscious green fields. Right at dark we spotted deer coming out of the trees and they came within 10 yards of us...I thought this is it...I'm finally gonna shoot my first buck, but there were no horns!!!

It was time to call our friend who has access to private land.  Justin was leaving for Montana in a few days and I really wanted to shoot my first deer this year.  So we met up with our friends Pat and Kelli and headed out for another evening hunt.  We went up the first road and found tons of sign but no deer.  Pat knew of another spot to try so we headed up that road full of huge clear cuts. It was only about 4pm and Justin and Pat were just saying we were a little early and the bucks wouldn't be out for another hour or so.  Ironically, we come around a corner and there it is...Justin spots a nice spike standing broadside about a 100 yards from the road.  He yells as quietly as possible "It's a buck, it's a buck," I thought wow this is it! I was so excited I couldn't even see it anymore and he said just look through the scope...it's right on it.  I lined up the crosshairs on the front shoulder and pulled the trigger...it was a perfect shot. He just kicked up his legs and fell right over...didn't even know what hit him! Naturally, Kelli and I started screaming and jumping up and down and that was it...I had buck fever.  We hiked up to the deer and Justin gutted it out for me (thanks babe), pat drug it to the truck, and I just got pictures taken with it :) It was absolutely perfect!

Sorry for the long story but I'm still really excited about it!  We had an awesome deer season and I can't wait til next year when we get to do it all over again!!

As my pal Brian just reminded me:

THIS is what the term "Quality Hunt" really means.  A big smile, A notched tag.  SUCCESS.

Trust me on this, that little spike rack is a huge trophy to a first-time hunter.  Nothing will ever beat that.

Now, if the WDFW could only get this in perspective

Oh, and BTW:  CONGRATULATIONS.  You done good.

See now, if you would have shot one that first day over on the east side you wouldn't have been able to experience what you did on the west side.  Every hunt ends up with different results, it's what happens in between that make it matter.  Sounds like you got a good supporting cast around you....Congrats to ya!!

Good job Jenna! I told Justin he better marry you soon before someone else does. If I had to do it over a hunting wife would be at the top of what I would look for. Instead I married an anti-hunter with a degree from Western. You should of seen how well I fit in with the save the wolves crowd when I was on campus. Actually I wouldn't change a thing but a hunting wife would be nice. Congrats again. Now you still have a few weeks to fill your bear tag.
