I'm getting ready to head to Alaska to hunt Caribou and Wolves with some friends and wondered if anyone else on the board was going to be up there. We will be hunting on the north side of the brooks range for the first 10 days of September. I had a blast doing it last year and hope this year will be a great hunt as well!

going fishing in 2 weeks in kechacan (spelled wrong) for a week, first time for me. Can't wait, it's not hunting but should bring home about 150 lbs of salmon and bottom fish! Good luck hunting and don't get ate by a bear!!

Can't make it this fall but hopefully will in the next couple years. Moose hunted up there a couple years ago and can't wait to get back. Have a fun trip

Just got back from Alaska last week. We flew to Anchorage, drove to Valdez and fished there for a few days. We brought back about 300 pounds of halibut, lingcod, seabass and yellow eye. We caught a ton of salmon but didn't want to pay to have those shipped back here since we are about to catch a bunch here. We seen some bears and moose there. I would like to do a caribou hunt. Have a great time.

Doyourtime, I was wondering, if I mailed up those wax coated fish boxes for transporting them home, would that be cheaper than buying them up there? Thanks
-
I am not sure how much it would cost to ship them and how much they cost to buy here. I bought mine in Anchorage at Sportsmens Warehouse. There were 3 different kinds there. The wax boxes were like $9.00 each, then they had some boxes with a bubble type insulation inside for $15.00 and then they had the boxes with the styrofoam looking cooler inside of it for $18.00. I went with the $15.00 ones after talking to a guy that owns a fish processing place in Valdez.

Do you want to sell them?

You will be flying back when I arrive, I land in Anchorage on the 10th, Kotz and hopefully out to the bush on Sept 11th for 10 days. Been to Alaska for fishing many times, first Alaska hunt. I have a Caribou tag and will pick one up for Wolf as well, my friend has a Moose tag and can take a bear. I would really enjoy hearing about your trip last year, shoot me a PM and I'll give you a call if you have time to discuss.

The guys I hunt with are from Fairbanks but rave about the fishing down in some of the areas you guys mentioned. They pretty much live on fish and wild game. congrats on all the fish guys! Shooter, PM sent.

Ive always wanted to hunt Alaska but never looked into it. Is it expensive? How does their tag system work and guided or self guided?
-
Tags depend on the unit and species you're hunting. There are lots of OTC caribou and Moose areas. Dahl sheep and Grizzlies require a guide or a hunting partner who is a close relative, but there are lots of opportunities for both if you satisfy this requirement. Tags are reasonable for out of state, expensive, but less than most other western states. If you're a resident, they treat you awesome with many tags being either dirt cheap or free. The biggest expense is getting there and costs associated with getting to where you want to hunt. Many areas are only accessable by bush plane or airboat.
-
I've heard that Bush plans are the way to go which is cool. Where would be a good unit to start looking into.

Depend on what you want to hunt. For caribou, I've mainly been in 26. Bush planes are cool but can cost you 2000. They will get you in some great places though!

Ok I'll look into it thanks

We had a great trip and all shot nice bulls. We quit at 11 as we figured we had enough meat to take care of at that point. One of my relatives from Fairbanks got a nice Grizzly bear aswell. I haven't got all the pics off the camera yet but I'll post a few from my phone. We had to pack most out from a few miles off the river but it was worth it as we found some nice bulls and spot and stalk is always may favorite way to roll!
