Title: Broadhead tuning for the first time...
Post by: returnofsid on August 25, 2013, 11:41:03 AM
Last night I screwed 100 grain, 3 blade Muzzys onto three of my arrows.  I've never, EVER shot broadheads.  This morning I started at 20 yards, putting all three broadheads into a nice tight group, about 1" to the right of my aim point.  At 30 yards, all three are still in a good group, about 2" to the right of my aim point and about 1" high.  I'll need to get to the club range this evening to shoot past 30 yards.  I hope to get to the club range, with my broadhead block, this evening and shoot out to 50 yards.

With field tips, I'm shooting great groups, on target, out to 50 yards.

I've been reading about Broadhead tuning, as much as possible, to try to figure out what I should adjust, if anything.

Should I move my entire sight to the right, until I'm on target, OR should I move my rest?  If I should move my rest, do I follow my arrows or move it the opposite direction?

Slick trick has a pretty good way to tune your broadheads on their website. They tell you to shoot field tips first to see where they are hitting, then shoot your broadheads. If your broadheads are shooting to the right of your field tips you move your arrow rest to the left. But do small adjustments they will go a long ways. I used their info to tune my Bowtech destroyer and it worked great! Hope this helps!

Move your rest in the direction from the broadheads to the field points.  2" at 30 won't take much moving. 1/128" or maybe 1/64" will do it.

Also, stop shooting groups with your broadheads.  Shoot 2 or 3 at a time but, each arrow should go to a different spot.  Grouping broadheads is a great way to damage arrows, cut fletchings, or damage the heads themselves

Okay, I've moved the rest a "teeny tiny" amount, to the left.  Field Tips and Broadheads are both hitting right where I'm aiming, at 20 yards.  Time to grab the block and head to the club range to stretch it out to 30, 40 and 50 yards.

Yeah, I only actually shot one group, with broadheads, just to make sure that I was shooting consistently.  After that, I shot at a different dot, with each arrow.

Well, not so good news...

After spending about 3 hours, not being able to put my broadheads where I want them, I realized that my broadheads are actually hitting my riser, at full draw.  My arrows are slightly too short!  GRRR

Time to get some new arrows that are about 1/2" longer...ugh!  Where would people recommend I go, on such short notice, in the Spokane area?

Currently I'm shooting Gold Tip Expedition Hunters.  I want something at least comparable.

Head to whitetail plus in deer park. Greg usjally has a great selection of arrows in stock and should be able to set you up right!

How is your form and shot placement before your started using broadheads? How is your draw length?
You can always shorten your draw length to compensate if you feel it would help.
I shoot a 28" draw and Im actually not liking it right now, I'm gonna go down to a 27 1/2 for awhile and see how that works out. Im noticing an arch in my back as Im holding the bow.
+ My anchor sits to far back on my face IMO

Also, draw length adjustment is free.

My brother had this problem but he sands the end of the shaft a bit to turn the broad head a bit more. This allows the blade to be at a slightly different angle and it does not touch the bow.

Form is fine.  Shot placement, with field tips is great.  Draw length is set just right, IMO.  I really don't think I'd want a shorter draw length.

I've considered something like this but the broadheads actually touch the riser in two spots, on the side, and near the bottom, so turning the broadheads probably wouldn't solve the problem.

What bow do you shoot?

I'm shooting a Matthews SQ2 with a 28" DL, set at about 68 lbs.

I also shoot a Hoyt Vectrix with a 29" DL, set at 60 lbs.

Both are left handed.

Looks like I'll be heading to Deer Park!

Sounds like new arrows are your only option, what spine are you shooting? 340 on that 68lb?

My existing GT arrows are 400 spine, 5575s.  The replacements will probably be 340s since I found out that the 5575s don't actually weigh enough to legally hunt with, unless I drop the bow to 63 pounds or less.

Well, I went to Whitetail Plus Archery yesterday morning. My arrows were definitely too short.  So, I purchased 6 Gold Tip XT Hunters, 7595, cut 3/4" longer.  Unfortunately, they didn't have any prefletched so they're fletching them, with 2" fletchings.  They suggested a helical fletch.  I'm hoping they'll be done today!!  That will give me this evening and tomorrow to get them sighted in!  I also have a wedding to attend, tomorrow...lol.
