:yike: :yike: He must've been sick or weak. Wolves only attack sick and weak animals.  :bash: :bash:

Wait until you are out shed hunting and you have that creepy feeling run up your spine, and you look up and there is one standing there watching you.   It does wonders to the heart.

I wish one of these things would walk through my dads property over in Inchelium then he can put some legal  :mgun:  on it. I don't think the Colvilles have got one yet but I know they are there.

Please don't tell me you saw wolves in 18? That was the one place in Idaho I have never heard them.

This story is obviously just the imagination of some deranged soul. Wolves don't attack people, it's unheard of here in the States. They are good, kind animals.

Ask the people of Asia what wolves do when they get hungry.

FYI - Moose are practically gone in northern Minnesota, their Fish and Game is still doing studies to try and figure out why the moose are disappearing.

Wolves have been in 18 for awhile.  They seem to be affecting the deer more than the elk.   :dunno:

Why did that guy attack that wolf with his head?  He really shouldn't have provoked the wolf.

After the wolf attacked Graham, sometime between 4 and 4:30 a.m. Saturday, he struggled with it briefly.

“After I got up, I was kicking at it and screaming at it, and it wouldn’t leave,” he said. “But then after a while I got it to run away.”

Graham’s girlfriend fled during the attack.

“She ran and got in her Jeep right away,” he said, and two members of the camping party slept through the screaming, kicking and fighting, he said.

He's lucky to be alive.  :yike:

Teens on a campout = alcohol-induced "deep sleep" - at least that was the equation when I was a teen.  I once threw a string of ladyfingers into a 2-man tent in which 4 post-concert teen males were "sleeping": although the tent was completely destroyed by the ensuing flailing, two of the four "slept" through the entire event.

I was out last weekend enjoying Arizona's summer archery deer hunt. I was climbing up a mountain and nearly bumped into a bedded mountain loin just below the peak. Huge male. So close I remember his facial features. He ran up to the top of the hill and I opted to glass elsewhere.

According to Dr. L. David Mech, a wolf researcher with the University of Minnesota and the U.S. Geological Survey, writing on the International Wolf Center website: “Two interesting wolf-human encounters in Northeastern Minnesota add further to the mix of ways in which wolves have interacted with humans, without the humans coming out seriously injured.

since when is a 4.3 inch gash in the head not considered a "serious injury"

The DNR offers the following tips for an encounter with an aggressive wolf:

In the rare event that you do have an encounter with an aggressive wolf, wildlife officials say:

– Don’t run. Act aggressively, stepping toward the wolf and yelling or clapping your hands if it tries to approach.

– Do not turn your back toward an aggressive wolf. Continue to stare directly at it. If you are with a companion and more than one wolf is present, place yourselves back to back and slowly move away from the wolves.

– Retreat slowly while facing the wolf and act aggressively.

– Stand your ground if a wolf attacks and fight with any means possible (use sticks, rocks, ski poles, fishing rods or whatever you can find).

– Use air horns or other noisemakers.

– Use bear spray or firearms if necessary.

– Climb a tree if necessary; wolves cannot climb trees.   I don't know why... but that hit me funny :chuckle:

i wish the young man well.

I chuckled at this story when I read it. Mostly because there were a few bear attacks a week or two ago including one involving a black bear running down a little girl in Michigan and a sow grizzly attacking four people in Yellowstone.

This is just one more predator attack and most people won't care. It happens sometimes when enjoying the great outdoors.

Carry on.

According to well known animal advocate Casey Anderson, wolves only will attack humans if they are half dog. Cause full blooded wolves are to afraid of people.

were those artificially introduced non native Canadian bears responsible for attacks inMI and Yellowstone?

Environmental groups downplay wolf attacks

Sixteen-year-old Noah Graham of Solway is lucky to be alive after being attacked without warning by a wolf while sitting at a campfire with friends last month on Lake Winnibigoshish near the town of Bemidji in far northern Minnesota.

“I had to reach behind me and jerk my head out of its mouth,” he reported, after which he leaped to his feet and fought back until the wolf fled. He suffered a four-inch gash on his scalp, closed with 17 staples — “the worst pain of my life” — and required a series of rabies shots. Meanwhile, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) officials, who called Noah’s experience the first documented serious-injury wolf attack on a human in Minnesota, jumped to the wolf’s defense asserting that a wolf killed nearby — it may not be the attacking wolf — had a “jaw deformity.”

Defenders of Wildlife (DOW), which might as well call itself Defenders of Wolves — they even have a statue of one outside their headquarters — said it was “surprised” by the attack. DOW went further than the DNR noting not only that the wolf “had some malformation of its jaw” but also that it was “reportedly habituated to humans.” But DOW downplayed the incident contending that “only two known deaths have occurred from wild wolf attacks across all of North America in modern history.” That is a bit of an understatement and far from a full and accurate accounting of the dangers to mankind from wolves, but DOW has come a long way in truth telling about the wolf since the 1990s.

Back then, DOW persuaded the Walt Disney Company to include the following disclaimer in its 1991 film adaptation of Jack London’s novel White Fang, the tale of a young man’s adventures during the Alaskan gold rush and his friendship with a wolf: “Jack London’s White Fang is a work of fiction. There has never been a documented case of a healthy wolf or pack of wolves attacking a human in North America.” That was followed by a statement bemoaning so-called “persecution” of the wolf and calling for the introduction of the wolf into “wilderness areas.”

Thanks to lobbying efforts like these, and the willingness of the Clinton administration to accede to the demands of DOW and other environmental groups, wolves were reintroduced in Yellowstone National Park in 1994 and quickly spread over a 500-mile radius to all corners of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. Earlier this month, a pack of wolves stampeded 176 sheep — two were bitten and killed; one was half eaten; the others died of asphyxiation.
