Post by: 762Armo on August 30, 2013, 03:30:30 PM
Got one of my buddies to take me fishing with him, so I don't have to teach myself. lol.

I'm getting new gear for everything. We're gonna be River Fishing. From the bank.

Here's the list I was recommended to get:

Spinning Rod and Reel
Bobbers
Salmon Plugs
Dick Nites - different types and sizes
Salmon Roe - Deep Red color
Weights/Slinky Weights
Swivels
Octopus #2-#4 Bait Hooks
15lb Test Line

What suggestions would you guys give for the items listed?
What am I missing, and what don't I need?

Just getting started, so I don't want to spen a forture.. YET  :chuckle:

Thanks guys!!!

OK- IMO the only serious answer here is hold on a second. If your buddy is serious about taking you fishing with him, he would hopefully be open to either letting you use some of his gear, or at least going to the store(s) with you to make sure you are properly equipped for the type of fishing you will be doing.

Seriously- many of the items on your list have so many variables that it is impossible to offer a suggestion without knowing more about what EXACTLY you're going to be doing- and your buddy is the one who can best help with that.

Some items- Dick Nites for example- are pretty specific. But even those come in 3 sizes and many finishes/colors. If I had to pic one it would be the #1 in 50/50 brass/chrome.
Most of the other items -"salmon plugs" for example - come in dozens of styles and literally hundreds of finishes- many of which have different applications; this makes it very difficult to provide a suggestion unless someone knows the river, the species, even the water conditions, time of day, depth of water etc.

Meeting up with your buddy pre-trip and making arrangements to get outfitted based on his advice is the best advice I can give you.

Not deep red eggs! Blood red eggs. Perfect red.
If your mixing your own cures for eggs. Mix dark pink with orange and it comes out the best red.

If the dude does not even have a rod to fish for salmon with, I highly doubt he's ready to experiment with complicated egg cures....buddy with experience should be providing the eggs...just sayin...

True.
He will bring his own gear, and let me use it, but I also wanted to grab some things myself to play with so it's a bit more fair towards him.  Our schedules don't line up in the near future to go together to the store, but I still wanted to go get a couple thigns myself.

We're going to be on Skykomish River.

Cool offer Cap.Silver!
If you can't do that then I'd get to a reliable sporting goods store with you list- Outdoor Emporium comes to mind. They should be able to get you going- along with some of the suggestions here.

First of all, 15# line seems a bit stout on a spinning reel for humpies and silvers on the Skykomish- it's harder to cast, requires more lead, retains more memory on the spool. I'd go with quality, limp 10#-12# at the most. Lighter for leaders.

And I can't imagine fishing for salmon in a river without a few Vibrax spinners -size 2-3 if it's low- 3-4 if its higher-.

Next suggestion, please...

if you're just trying to catch a few pink salmon, a spinning rod and any pink lures.

Caught and released 3  today.  One plunking with sand shrimp,  one on a humpy special and one on a #2 pink dick night.

The neighbor kid I have been taking fishing rode his bike to the river a week ago and caught one on a night crawler with a little piece of pink yarn.

Go out and have a good time!  catching or not!

Skykomish system coho are not the best biters so don't get discouraged if you aren't having much success. A pink hoochie on a 1/4oz jig head will beat up on humpies though. Don't over look 1/4oz kastmasters in green and blue, reeled slow so they wobble back and fourth not spin.

Agree....1/4 oz.jig head and a hoochie skirt is all you need to catch humpies ..maybe a little shrimp oil does not hurt and go with 10# test line .... :fishin:

A little bit of success this weekend.  :)
Nice! Bleed your fish after landing by ripping the gills. This will get the blood out of thoses eggs. Bloody eggs rot fast and dont taste as good to the fishies.  ;)

Should I gut it right away as well, Or is it ok to just rip the gills out and let it sit there while I continue to fish?

And I just fried up those eggs and ate them up. :) Couple of my friends thought I was weird, but I like them. Now that I have the first out of the way, I'll save the next batch for bait. :)

I just pop the gills out and let them bleed out for a few minutes then throw them on top of the ice in the cooler. the quicker they cool the better, but you don't want them sitting in water. :twocents:

Yuk! You ate em? Ewwwww....
You dont need to gut them right away, just bleed them. If your going to fillet them, its way easier with the guts in still!

Lol! no one ever eats sushi? The salmon roe rolls aren't MY thing, love most other types of sushi though.. but it's not that uncommon for people to eat the roe.

Roe is the main reason that commercials and Indians net chums and pinks. The meat goes off to be made into cat food, dog food, whatever, but the roe gets sent overseas for BIG BUCKS. Same as the herring fisheries in AK. They aren't after the fish, they're after the roe.

Yes, I did really eat them Smossy,
and no they don't usually fry them Sumbeech66.
When I get some more I'll cure them, so I don't have to buy caviar anymore.
Def eat sushi with it, but usually I like to spread some butter on a piece of bread top it off with caviar and just munch on it.

I've eaten and enjoyed other "alternative" salmon products including "white roe" and an Alaskan treat called "stink eggs".

Can't say I care for the eggs though! Salmon eggs are edible, but I prefer my fish less fishy-oily (and salty if cured). The oil explosion of fish-oil when the eggs burst I find rather gross. Stink eggs were actually better.

  Looks like you bled them this time.  I toss mine in the cooler but I use 2 liter bottles frozen and then put water in the cooler as it seems to cool them faster and more completely than just with ice cubes.

As far as the roe, I'm not a big fan but a buddy of mine loved the caviar I made from a 30 lb king many years ago, she had 8 pounds of eggs.   :yike:
