Ok, Family friend is giving away a fairly nice 21 foot boat to us with a moter, just the reverse doesnt work. Sounds like its worth working on...
My question is, Its not on a trailer, Its just propped up in the yard. If i were to find a boat trailer to borrow off someone, How in the world would you get the boat onto the trailer? :dunno:
*Ok update, Found out the boat IS on a trailer currently but the receiver hitch was rusted and broke off.
So now how in the heck would you get the boat OFF a trailer, and then back ON to another one :bash:
-
Crane?
-
If you can back up to the bow as close as possible you may be able to winch and back up slowly at the same time. Good luck sounds tricky.
-
Crane?
Yeah lol I was thinking maybe an engine hoist? To hold the front of the boat up. Doesnt sound easy at all.
-
You can buy a new reciever hitch and either bolt or weld it onto the old trailer.
-
In AK we used to prop my boat on 4- 55 gallon drums with planks on top of them. That was being lowered with a travel lift though. You might be able to do something like that.

Sounds the easiest way really, Id just be worried it about it falling apart driving down the road if one parts already rusted off..
-
is it the tong on the trailer that's the problem?? picts?? ive fixed a few

Is the trailer tongue rusted? A receiver hitch is the one hitch that is connected to your car. If the tongue or the ball rusted off in the tongue you can buy new tongue piece to replace the rusted one.
How to replace trailer hitch.http://www.ehow.com/how_7603742_replace-trailer-hitch-boat-trailer.html (http://www.ehow.com/how_7603742_replace-trailer-hitch-boat-trailer.html)

Im not 100% but I believe so. I think he said there's no tongue, or wench on it.
-
Back the trailer up to the boat, attach the hook, place a couple floor jacks under the boat and crank it onto the trailer.

You dont think that would be too much stress on a trailer/wench? That's the main thing I was worried about.

Bummer, a good wench is priceless on a boat. :chuckle:

I pull my boat on and off the trailer a couple times a year with mine.

Just showing you the size of the boat that I use the crank to pull on and off the trailer. ;)

Here are some photos.
Looks like it has potential. Comes with a title.
-
Just take everything else off the front of the trailer and back the good trailer right up to the front of the boat and pull it on.
-
:yeah:
That trailer looks salvageable as long as the axle is good you can rebuild the tounge.
When you go to take it off the temporary trailer, tie the stern to something solid and just slowly pull the trailer out from under it as you place blocks below the boat to support it, then you can do the reverse when you get a new trailer.
-
Good luck. We took on a project very similar to this once, and it was a pain in the butt. In the end wewould have been better off not having anything to do with it.

What would be the best bet on going about doing that? I have a welding machine but I dont think we have a tank at the moment. So Id have to bolt on.
You think re-attach the old tongue setup or create a whole new one? Id need length inbetween the tongue and where its currently broken.
-
you can get 3 straw hay bales and a come-along and pull it off of the trailer by hooking into a tree and then you'll be up and able to get back on the new trailer with the come-along

As far as the reverse goes, it could be as simple as the shift linkage not being adjusted properly. If it was a gear issue, it probably wouldn't work in forward either.

Adding length to the tongue is fine, it actually helps keep your truck wheels out of the salt when launching. Aslo, backing up is easier with a longer tongue. Cut it off both directions until you have solid steel.

lol If it runs, I could care less if the inside is gutted really. Ill put a filet table at the back and two seats, Good to go.

:yeah: After seeing the pictures I would see if anyone would loan you a trailer and do what smdave said. The trailer it is currently on looks like it would need a lot of work on it before I would put any weight on it. And I don't see how you could fix it as it is with the boat on it.
If you get the boat running, I would also repaint the bottom of the boat.

Makes sense, What type of steel do I use? Like a raw piece that's around 2x2 thickness? Then just cut it to length, bolt on?

No reverse is the sign of a outdrive going bad. Had that happen was gonna cost $2000 to fix on a boat that was probably only worth about that. Just telling you from experience. Once a boat starts to have problems one of two things happens. You have to spend alot to fix it or it becomes yard art.
-
Coulde be, I was assuming it was an outboard, I know nothing about inboards and outdrives other than I wouldn't own one. ;) They make brackets that can attach to the stern of boats that had an inboard in order to convert it to an outboard. :dunno:
As far as the steel to use to repair the tongue, use the same dimensions. I would guess it is 1/4 inch thick and either 4X4 or 4X6 inch. If the existing steel is strong enough, 3/8 or 1/2 inch bolts through plates on the sides should be enough but, I'm not there.

I just declined the offer, Im broke as it is. On to the next one.
-
Smart move. I was just going to post "Do you have a lot of money? If not I'd pass on it no matter how good it sounds. You're going to get nickle and dimed to death. :twocents: There's a reason it's been sitting there."
-
Oh well, lots of decent deals out there as winter approaches and the boating season goes away. You just need to decide what your boating needs are and just make sure what you find meets them.

Yeah we just want something big enough to be able to go into parts of the sound, Crabbing/Ling fishing when season comes back around, but not so big we cant take it around to lakes and such.

I think that was probably a good move on your part.

I've learned the hard way, that whole Bring Out Another Thousand thing can be no joke. Probably the right call. Plus as an archer there's no time for anything else!! :chuckle:

Hey Smossy check out the Bassboat restoration stuff over on BBC there are posts on everything from how to lift it off the trailer to wiring to buffing out the gel coat. Lots of good stuff over there. You could really have a gem on your hands with some elbow grease.
