Title: Today's purchase ruger American 270 "update: and first kill"
Post by: scottfrick on August 31, 2013, 11:17:41 PM
Can't wait to shoot it tomorrow. Topped it off with a nice little vortex diamondback 3-9x40 scope. Hopefully it will be a great little deer hunting rifle

Yea I'm stoked about the purchase. We went shooting today and it took 38 shells  :yike: to get them sighted in at a 100 yards. At first we couldn't even get it hitting at 25 yards :bash: sportsmans warehouse bore sighted these yesterday and we were hitting 8 feet high ( both rifles) at a 100 yards :bash: :bash: :bash: but now they are both perfect with 2 inches high at a 100.

"sportsmans warehouse bore sighted these yesterday and we were hitting 8 feet high ( both rifles) at a 100 yards".

With all due respect, you should have a competent gunsmith look at those rifles. Most riflescopes don't even have 96 inches of vertical adjustment in total. There appears to be something quite wrong. Best to find out now. :twocents:

Luckily we have a close family friend that is a gunsmith. 8' high may have been a bit over exaggerated but being bore sighted an all you would think one of the rifles would have at least hit paper. They were hitting extremely high and had to be brought down a lot. Ooh well tho, now they are both shooting great and I'm excited to get out and put them against an animal.

Do you know what ammo your friend is putting thru his? Factory or reloads? We are shooting fusion 150 grain bullets. I will be changing that up and going with 130 grain before deer season gets here.

:dunno: they were bore sighted first. We bought the rifles yesterday and scopes and then had them bore sight them for us. Something must have went wrong because with past rifles I've never had a problem hitting paper with the first couple shots. :bash: :bash:

I own several Ruger rifles but have not purchased one of the new Americans. I was with Tmike when he picked up a new American in .243 for his son and love the fact that Ruger went back to a factory adjustable trigger. Here is a good write-up of the Ruger American for anyone interested. http://www.rifleshootermag.com/2012/07/18/review-ruger-american-rifle/ (http://www.rifleshootermag.com/2012/07/18/review-ruger-american-rifle/)

i think that coyote must be deformed or something.. one of his front legs seems to be on backwards...    I know some folks love their .22 centerfires, but I always liked to use may standard big game rifles for coyotes.. shot one with a .30-06 Abolt from 7 paces one time.. Glad you got to test the rifle properly..

:chuckle: the hole the size of a bowling ball on its opposite side may have something to do with the deformation of its leg :dunno: :chuckle:
