Hes in the cooler and its just after 10 am... Here is the backstory- I started scouting/baiting in April.... this guy was the biggest buck coming in by far.. so as soon as I confirmed that, I knew he was the one I was after... Id not shoot any other buck. As the season was getting near he was coming in regularly between 7-9 am and occasionally in the evening. I wanted this guy so bad, he is even the background on my cell phone. My buddy Paul lives on the west side and said he would fly over to hunt today with me.... I checked the cams last night and he had came in each of the last 4 mornings around 7-8.... I was pretty confident this morning. We got into the blind at 445 and began the waiting game. Just after dark we had some does come in, they feed for 20 min or so and left, then a spike and 2 more doe showed up.. they also feed for a few and kept on. Just after 7 am Paul nudged me and said "deer" he saw the leg of a deer coming down from the left ( the direction the buck had been coming) I am pretty happy he was with me as his view was different then mine and I could not see the deer when he did. This deer was acting much different then the others and I was 99% sure it was him... he took over 3 min to take a few steps and was very cautious on his approach down the hill to the bait. It was a very tense few min as we had a standoff before we got a good view of him. Finally he stepped out at 30 yards and gave me the broadside shot I wanted. The rest is history.... arrow hit him perfectly.... cut the top of the heart and both lungs.... he made it maybe 20 feet before crashing down the hill.... it was all over in less then 10 sec. Paul said hes down buddy!! and the adrenaline started to pump!! what a great way to start my season.... killing the buck I was after opening morning and sharing it with a close friend!!!! Now its Pauls turn tonight!! good luck to all of you.

I was in a ground blind. 30 yard shot .

Another funny part to the story... whem I was almost home we stopped at the gas station and I realized that both our bows were missing ... :bash: we drove back to the spot and there they were... we loaded the deer amd took off. Left our bows there... :chuckle: got too excited I guess.

Nice job man! Great story! What are you going to so the rest of the season?
-
update!!! my buddy Paul who came over whacked a 4x4 tonight! its been a pretty killer opener!!! pun intended... :chuckle:
this day really shows how scouting and preseason preparation can pay off. as far as I am concerned the hunt is over before I ever climb in the blind or stand, once season opens it should just be a trigger pull in early season. both these bucks "read the script" and came in on que to what the cameras showed us the last week. to me whitetail season never ends. there is always scouting to do, and permission to obtain, sheds to find, etc.
anyhow, it was a sweet opener! thanks again for all the kind words and good luck to all this season! :hello:
-
Congrats to both of you, always nice when the deer follow the script. :IBCOOL:
-
Nice Buck. Congratulations
-
Wow, an incredible opener for sure! Way to get it done and what a great story. Making scouting work makes it so much sweeter. Congrats to both the hunters
-
CONGRATS!!! You definitely did it right! Congrats to both of you, you took all of the guesswork out of the equation. :IBCOOL:
-

You recognized his ugly mug through all that face paint? :chuckle: I think he opened 3 packages of paint and used them all up at once... :yike: he is a great guy who will do anything for his friends. And it seems like he catches a few fish every once in a while.
-
Excellent looking bruiser. Cool!

I was thinking about that today, I haven't looked at the teeth yet, but both heads are in the garage freezer. ill take a look tomorrow and hopefully post some pics. I am certain that pauls buck is a 2 year old, and was thinking mine was 3 but not too positive.
