Title: Deer in the City
Post by: swanny on October 25, 2008, 10:22:17 PM
I'm up in Bellingham all weekend and have seen a doe several times today in the same place along a busy street.  The strangest part, is that she will nearly let you walk up to her. She was also bedded down on the side of the road. I first saw her around 11 this morning and just now saw her again as she was bedded down. There is another deer, not sure if it's a fawn, doe, or buck up the hill from her too.

Any ideas why she wouldn't move all day long? Should we notify F&W? I can't see anything physically wrong with her, although she did lick herself quite a bit when I was just watching her.

That sounds like a buck is tending her.  I am betting it is a buck that is laying next to her.  I am not familiar with when BT come into heat, but that sounds like the most likely reason.

When I went to college up there, I saw bucks and deer in general all over by the drive in and all the way down to Fred Meyer.  Get creative and bowhunt up there...there are some HUGE bucks around Lake Padden.  Most of my old haunts have been developed now but the deer are still there.  I showed Boyd Iverson some pics just after he published his first book.  He was amazed...

Just keep and eye on that doe and look after her.  Call the WDFW if she looks to be in harms way but that may do more harm than good.

Speaking of town deer, I drove through Republic on the second day of deer season and saw about 15 bucks in the city limits. The big one was laying in someones lawn about 20 feet from their house. I took all these pic's from my pickup window.

Wow! Those are nice looking bucks!

She was gone this morning so she must be alright. It was really strange to see her in the same place for at least 10 hours yesterday. Wish I could have seen the deer in the bushes above her, all I could see was eyes and a white butt. Couldn't tell what the head looked like though.

I know that area well.  I used to live over near Fairhaven and there are some huge deer hanging in there.  Every October we'd see some pigs crossing the roads at night.

The property behind Heath Tecna off of Sunset has or had a real bruiser!  Used to see him every day or so when I worked there.  Uncoolperson says the doe is still out back, so maybe the boys are too.

That area has always held good deer.  I saw a monster near Buckhorn Archery one evening.  This was around 1990 when I was in college.
