So, i'm walking throw a field of brush and thistle, dead trees and what not.And this big BT(body was huge, rack was atleast a 3 point), sadly i couldn't take the shot, because of gas pipes that lay behind it(the property used to be owned by a logging company).so i go looking for it, no luck to see it again.
Then, I'm walking through this tall grassy knole, out pops a nice looking one.Adrenline is pupping, spot it in my scope. And, bam, he's down.I went up to him, he was dead, but i had hit him in the hip, and he was just barely legal.
But, he wasn't a desent size, and I'm happy with it...Still got elk to look forwad too.
-
Congratulations. Wow, a shot to the hip put him down for the count huh? When you say "hip" what are you talking about........his hind quarter?
-
It's not exactly the hip, it's kidna on the side of the leg.
And, i will never use a 150g 30.06 for black tail again(well, maybe).theres a big hole in the portion of it that makes a good roast.
-
Oh, I think maybe you're referring to the shoulder.
150 gr 30-06 is ok. If you don't want to lose any meat, you need to shoot him behind the shoulder.
-
no, I hit him on the back left leg(he moved right as i was pulling the trigger). But, i'm happy. He's not trophy worthy, but he'll do.
-
What bullet are you using? That makes more of a difference IMO then the cal. and weight of the bullet. :twocents:
I have seen blacktails shot with guns as big as 30-378 weatherby mag with very small holes.
-
Federal 30.06 150g SPRG.
