It's to warm to let it lay overnight.  No way it will cool down enough to keep the hams for going bone sour.  Take all the extra light batteries you got.  Don't want to run out of light for this kinda work...

Yep continue with the trailing and if you bump him back off for an hour then repeat. Do this all night till it gets light enough for a follow up shot. If you back out till morning and he is dead, then chances he will be sour for sure. Been there done that.

The only bull I left overnight in my life was left overnight in a lot cooler weather than that.  The hide is a great insulator and holds a lot of heat in the animal after it's down.  I lost the hams on that one to bone sour.  The meat is thick there and doesn't cool very well.  Hope you don't have the same issue.
Once you get him, get the meat off the bone asap and if anything even hints of a sour smell wipe it down with white vinegar and then ice the meat.  That'll address any further souring if it's trying to go bad.

I am watching and waiting.   Horrible weather to have to leave an animal overnight.  I am not sure a deer would have even made it.  I used to see so much of that on TV.  I know those animals were toast.  Hoping for the best for him.

I have been in the hills for the last two weeks.....If the bull did what most wounded animals will do....it buried itself in a deep, dark, wet hole and laid down to die.  With that being said I am sure if they found it and immediately got the guts and hide off it will be fine.  It has been getting down to upper 40's and low 50's at night where I have been camping and that is plenty cool enough (as long as they found it before the heat hit today).

Also....I believe it is better to let a wounded animal lie rather than push it.  I have witnessed many of animal lost cause they were pushed by trackers in the dark.  If it was not an ideal hit and the animal did not go down within 100 yards.....I would have waited too.  Better to find an animal and salvage what you can than push it and possibly never find it.

It is possible that the elk is still very much alive (though wounded) and the meat will be fine.

Lots of scenarios here......I personally like the decision to not rush things.

Hope you found him and hope to see pics.

This scenario is a double edged sword. Chase him down in the dark and bump him, keep him moving and he'll never bed to die. Leave him to bed when it's too warm and die and he bone sours. I suspect he'll go down in a dark hole and die and you'll find him in the morning, but I'm not sure about the quality of the meat. One thing for sure by the description of the blood is that he's dead. Hope you found him.

Number one reason why nobody wants to post here anymore...the internet experts always ruin it forothers glad you never make mistakes maybe we should come learn your ways.

If you are that inexperienced then you really shouldn't be saying things like "I stuck an arrow in him..."  An animal left overnight will bone sour in that heat.  Those are just facts.

Might benefit more from responses if details like this were posted:
1.  Shot angle (broadside, quartering to, quartering away?)
2.  Where were you aiming, did you hit where you were aiming?
3.  Did the animal run down hill, up hill?

Then you need to have good lights and should be searching all night unless you really think it wasn't a fatal shot and he is still alive.

And it would still be better for the sport as a whole if these type of posts weren't on here but that is just my opinion.

He said bubbles in the blood with dark spots so that's clearly a lung possibly two and a piece of the liver which is a fatal shot, being dark and good possibility he won't go far and lay down why push it?Hunting elk in 90 degree weather isn't the ideal conditions but thousands of people do it so why question his decision to let the bull go bed and die instead of bumping him miles into the woods with flashlights?

Please do not sit here and judge other hunters...people post things like this for help not to be ridiculed online.   good luck on finding your bull. I know a lot of us would have done the same thing.no reason to push a animal in the dark

Its a good learning experience for all.   I wont take a shot that late anymore.  Not worth it.   I did it once and it turned out OK.  I heard him go down hard so was able to get on him without waiting.    In this scenario, I would have waited, and since it was obviously fairly close to the truck either went for help or better lights then got on him after the short wait.   I would be very worried about wasting the meat in this heat.   Its quite warm over here.  It was almost 100 in Yakima yesterday.  Not being judgemental or expecting folks to do what I do. Just my two cents.   If he is having trouble in daylight, it might have been fruitless all night anyways.

Next advice I would give is to go back to the shot.   Stand and take a deep breath and very calmly take a look.   Folks get all hyped up and will run by a critter several times and not see it.   Eventhough an elk is big, they can pile up into a hole behind a log fairly easy.   I know you are feeling the pressure and starting to feel sick over it.   Just be calm.  Angle of the shot would be helpful.  One lung, two lungs, angled for lung and liver.....How did the bull react?   A fat chunk can roll into the hole and plug the blood.   They can bleed out inside without spilling much blood.

Another thing is to know which direction the herd is going.  I made a bad shot on an elk in the morning once, had four people looking for hours and couldn't find it.  Came back right before dark and found it about 200 yards away from where I shot it.  It had dropped way down a hill and had died working its way back up to the herd.  At least two of us walked through the exact spot we eventually found it.

The first elk I killed fell over in full view less than 50 yards from my shot.  It took me 20 minutes to find him because he fell over in a patch of ferns that were chest high with a dip.  Wind changed and I spelled him and I walked right to him.  I started to get nervous for a minute. I thought I was gonna hand to call my brother and have to ask for help finding a bull I watched fall over dead.

Moral of the story. Try and get the wind in your favor around last blood a rutting bull has a strong odor.
