Next advice I would give is to go back to the shot.   Stand and take a deep breath and very calmly take a look.   Folks get all hyped up and will run by a critter several times and not see it.   Eventhough an elk is big, they can pile up into a hole behind a log fairly easy.   I know you are feeling the pressure and starting to feel sick over it.   Just be calm.  Angle of the shot would be helpful.  One lung, two lungs, angled for lung and liver.....How did the bull react?   A fat chunk can roll into the hole and plug the blood.   They can bleed out inside without spilling much blood.

Another thing is to know which direction the herd is going.  I made a bad shot on an elk in the morning once, had four people looking for hours and couldn't find it.  Came back right before dark and found it about 200 yards away from where I shot it.  It had dropped way down a hill and had died working its way back up to the herd.  At least two of us walked through the exact spot we eventually found it.

The first elk I killed fell over in full view less than 50 yards from my shot.  It took me 20 minutes to find him because he fell over in a patch of ferns that were chest high with a dip.  Wind changed and I spelled him and I walked right to him.  I started to get nervous for a minute. I thought I was gonna hand to call my brother and have to ask for help finding a bull I watched fall over dead.

Moral of the story. Try and get the wind in your favor around last blood a rutting bull has a strong odor.

A pic would be awesome! We are all human and make mistakes and Mother Nature does some crazy things that no one can explain. Good job on finding him.
