Saw 2 baby bears that Mom had just kicked off yesterday morning. I was headed fishing so no rifles in the truck.

Was working on my roof today and in the orchard above the house there was a shoot out!!!! :yike:

Sounded like some one hunting bears with either an AR or the bear also had a gun and was shooting back.
Didn't count the rounds lost count but close to a 20 round clip was scattered in amongest the tree's.

I saw 5 last week, a single one running down the road in front of me as I was leaving the woods, and then a sow with 3 cubs within a quarter mile of where I saw the single one, on the same road.  I haven't seen anything in the clearcuts or edges of clearings.  Seen lots of scat that is FULL of what looks like the fur of fawns.....

i figured i won't get out for another couple weeks, but i have a couple places i would like to get up in and see if they are hitting the elderberries hard. I have been in to a couple spots in years past and seen the elderberry bushes tore up and berries gone, besides it will be cooler then.

Last scat I saw was MAYBE 6hrs old.......max.......to me that's close........I haven't been able to get them into camp for a party yet........but working on it. :IBCOOL:

Old Trappers story is that they wont hit the elderberries until it freezes.   It causes a chemical change in the berries to make them edible. (non laxative) so they don't shat themselves to death.  Anecdotally I believe them. :chuckle:

Rose hips, mountain ash, chokecherries (not so much in 49), snowberries, are all good sources right now.  Some hallberries and serviceberries in certain locals.

you sure they eat the snowberries and rose hips?  i have spots where i know there are lots of bears, and there are hills absolutely covered in snowberries and rose hips that i havent seen a single sign of browsing on.  maybe im just not looking at enough of the bushes, theres too damned many of them.  i just always thought they didnt eat that stuff

I think you have more orchards where you live Chris. Nobody is seeing anything now, at least over here. When is your next day off ?
