Title: Start a hunting camp.
Post by: Russ McDonald on September 16, 2013, 06:24:07 PM
So I had a thought about starting a hunting camp.  I know there are a lot of lone Hunters here.  Wouldn't care who joins.   Anyone interested?  I an a bow hunter but have a rifle and black powder ago i am open of we can get a group together.  I have a set up for deer was hoping this being for elk and next year.  I know most of us are setup for this year. So here are a few things.
1.  Where should we hunt?  Eastside or west.
2.  What equipment?  Bow, blackpowder, rifle.
Add away if you think of more and who is interested.

Very cool idea- but oh so risky. My hunting partners are chosen with about as much scrutiny as my wife was. I'd love to have a camp of hunters, but it's tough to find one good hunting partner, let alone a group. Good Luck!

I would be intersted in a hunting camp
hunt west side usually capitol forest, new to elk but want to go BBAAAAADD
I have modern, (black powder never fired) picked up a bow but not reall proficient with it yet, I think that would be unfair to the animal

Going to bump this back up.  I am looking at all the seasons and I was thinking about sometime around the end of October.  That puts us right after regular/early season and late season for everything.  What do you all thing?  People can come even if your not interested in elk camp.  I would rather do this on a Friday or weekend.  If it is on a Sunday don't get your hopes up for the Seahawks being on TV either.  :chuckle: :chuckle:  No football in my house until after NASCAR season.

It is a great idea. I already have a camp. Ghost Camp since 1987. Started out two guys.
Now 12 guys for muzzy elk, 3 for turkey, 3-6 for modern deer. 2 -3 for duck.

I offer the following comments for your consideration.

Every camp needs a name. First order of business pick a name. Why? because the name gives the members of your camp something to grab hold of, to be part of, and creates a tighter bond. It also keeps folks in line. They will not do things they shouldn't because they do not want to shame the camp.

Every Camp needs a Camp sign with a logo on it. So as you meet people hunting they may not remember your name but they will remember your camp name and logo.

Every camp needs some basic rules. Like it or not you have to talk about the stuff you like and do not like. Generators, dogs, bring a girl friend, drinking, drugs, respect towards others in camp. Some one has to be the axe man like or not.
My camp is invitation only. Every year everyone gets a invitation well before the draws no invitation no come to camp. Over all the years I have only had to not invite back a couple people who could not get along. But there has to be some loose ground rules so everyone enjoys the camp.

Ghost Camp changes every year because some guys hunt elk ,some hunt deer, some only turkey or ducks. I hunt them all so I am always there. Stay flexible.

Some of the camp signs I have seen are:

John Deere Camp
Owl Camp
Sheep Creek Camp

You guys have a great time with it. Can't wait to here how it all turns out.

Nah to much work.

When I met my now daughter in law for the very first time. She called me aside after all the introductions and asked me when she could come to Ghost Camp.

I was puzzled because she does not eat meat. She explained that every time she mentioned Ghost Camp to my son he would get quiet and speak in a very reverent tone about it and his  plans to go to it.
She said I have to experience for myself.
I just laughed and said you are always welcome in camp.

Every camp needs fresh people, nothing survives without change.

No you not jacking this is very good information.  I my self have never been involved in any kind of camp.  Growing up in north eastern Minnesota all we had to do was walk out the do and hope on the dirt bikes, truck or what ever and only drive a couple miles to go hunting.  Up here I would like to get a camp together.  I have hunted for the most part alone for the last 4 seasons, this year being the 4th.  Finally learning some of this land and how nastly some of it is I figured get something together with a bunch of us.  Plus the fun and memories to create.  I welcome input from other people who are involved with camps.

Ive also noticed that some people like to setup camps for a long period of time... Usually prior to the season and all throughout..
Some people only being able to come out for a few days at a time because of work and or prior plans.
What would be the best way to go about keeping a camp up and established while everyone does the things they're obligated to do?
Usually have atleast 1 or 2 people there at all times or what?

Our camp this year is doing just that.  Two will stay the week, while 2 return for the weekends.

we have set up camps week in before and no one messes with them..and what people are bring tents, camper trailer, etc just to make sure you get a spot big enough. you get have to pick a spot everyone knows. its a good thing for everyone to meet before and make sure everyone gets along..i personal don't drink but don't really care if everyone else does. but I do care when people come not prepared...like no food or tent etc...

Yeah we have several retired guys that love to camp sit. We will be in Naches area oct. 2-10th than north to Twisp for deer till the 22 nd.

Most our guys do not come and go. A couple younger guys come for the weekends only.

Yeah most us us meet at one place than travel convoy style to where will camp.
We are all on radios or Rhinos so if someone has a problem we are all there to help.

It's a awesome thing to see when some thing breaks an one or two guys can fix it.
One year the tongue broke off our utility trailer. A rancher came along an offered us the use of a welder. One of our guys welded it up and in hour we were on the road.

I have to agree, it was a great time.  not only are the guys awesome, but you get to learn from the "old timers" in camp, guys who have hunted for years or who have hunted the general area forever.  and me being the only guy in camp that hadn't harvested an elk yet i got to hear different strategies, techniques, etc for hunting them and learned alot.  not to mention we get to laugh at eachother for our stupid mistakes or mishaps...lol

it's hard finding people you can hunt with due mainly to different hunting styles, ethics, weapons of choice, etc.  GASMAN and i have been hunting together for the past few years after hooking up on here for ducks.  now at least he doesn't have to drink alone....   :bdid:
Now we have more friends to hunt with during the "other" seasons...lol  can't wait to get with them for ducks/geese this year.

That's awesome, Sometimes there's good that comes out of larger groups. Little bit more ingenuity. Me and the lady are almost on the border of starting our own camp next year. Could be trial. I really don't know anyone that hunts though.

Hey, I live in Bonney lake as well and find myself hunting alone 90% of the time. I'm not from Washington but after being in the military for 7 years this is where I decided to stay, so I don't really know too many people here. Hunted last year alone and have started to hunt this year alone. I bow hunt as well.

Very cool idea- but oh so risky. My hunting partners are chosen with about as much scrutiny as my wife was. I'd love to have a camp of hunters, but it's tough to find one good hunting partner, let alone a group. Good Luck!

I select hunting partners better than I did my first wife.  First wife - alcohol, a bar, and after 1AM was the major part of the criteria.

I bet the USFS will make you get a concessionaires permit if they get wind of this.

Might as well setup a sporting goods area for ammo, bow tune ups, fix gun problems, knives etc.

If still looking for more people for your hunt camp, my hunting partner just transferred to 29 palms.
50 - Port Orchard - Retired Navy
hunt mostly Bow elk/deer
hunted West side around Mt. ST. Helens,  East side around Rimrock. Like east side little better.
Just went this year 1st time ever for waterfowl
Also have camper trailer 26ft
 Thanks

I think after hunting season and the holidays are over we should have a get together have a beer get to know each other.  I think out of all of these there might be more then one camp due to areas and hunting weapons.  What do you all think?

I think when everyone meets up someday, you better make some strict rules up. I've had new guys in camp that were friends of friends and they were total rejects and made our camp miserable. I could run security for you............. :chuckle:

Pick a couple future dates in a central place and see what shakes loose. You can't get them all on the same page.

I’m part of an established camp so all I can offer is advice to get you all started.  Someone take the lead and start “bucketing” groups to see who potential campmates are.
•   The first sort could be eastside and Westside hunting preference.
•   The second sort could be method.  Archery, Muzzleloader and Modern.
Once you have those names for which side of the state and hunting method preference then you then have the basis to set up a Face To Face to see about compatibility and general area you want to hunt.  After that you can set your hunt group and all apply for permits in that area.  Start scouting for a base camp location etc…

Figured I'd start this off early since early off season is the best time to get things in gear for the fall. I'm in Maple Valley, I try to get out often. I hunt Varmint, Duck, Upland birds, Small game, Big game. Whatever. I'm fairly new to most. I scout in the off season and practice. I just got a new compound bow im thinking of using this year if I get good enough with it. If you wanna join shoot me a PM, always good to have someone join.

You have been on that much lately.  :chuckle: Still not done with setting up an archery camp.  Tonight was a get together for good food and stories.  Well I was the one with the stories.  I probably talked to much  :chuckle:.

Was wondering what happened to you.  Next time. I believe we live pretty close to each other if I am correct.

It was a small but fun gathering. Thanks to Russ and wife for opening up their lovely home and putting together a spread of food that was fantastic. You guys really missed something. Russ grilled Blacktail, ribs, and fried fish imported all the way from Minnesota!

Russ, Paul, and I did our best, but only put a dent in the feast. I was vastly out numbered by the bow hunters.  2 to 1 if I recall.  :chuckle:  but there's always waterfoul and fishing.

It was a great time had by all. I've never been disappointed by the quality of guys and galls I've met from the forum.

Thanks again Russ and a pleasure meeting you, Paul.

Ok I've decided modern and west side. I'll continue working with my bow at CRB and possibly give it a go next year. Aug. 1st for Bear to start the season.

i plan to go,  i might do a guided with them b/c for me after GAS and lodging ETC... it is over 300.  I have to drive all the way from oak harbor and with a 6.2 L it's expensive... and my wife travels with me with our pets so even campsites are expensive.  :\

Still looking for getting an archery elk camp started.  I got a western tag this year, no multi season.  Sticking with the west side this year.

I am a member at CRB.  Unfortunately I won't be able to make the big 3d shoot in July.  I think we can do something though in the next month or so.

I bowhunt and I would be open to joining up. Was talking with Irishevox via PM's about the eastside. I guess it depends where on the Westside. Maybe shoot me a PM Russ.

Interested too. Have been thinking of trying to find public areas behind locked gates and riding bikes in deep to areas less pressured. Last years archery elk hunt was fun, but most of our time was too close to road access and a bit crowded. One of my partners from last year may head east. The other has a really limited time table, even tighter than mine. This will be my second archery season after 25 years away from the bow.

Hi Russ,  I just found this post; just what I've been looking for! I'm retired and usually hunt with my son who's a Ranger at Ft Lewis, but his leave rarely matches up with elk or deer season.  I'm looking for a person or group to hunt with next year.  I hunt bow, modern firearm and black powder.  Lots of hunting, but nothing but tag soup for the past several years.  East side, west side, doesn't matter to me.  This year I got the Pe Ell South permit, but we'll see if it was worth it.

I'm OK for early westside archery elk, but if anything develops  for muzzy deer or late archery elk, let me know.  I'd love to develop  a new circle of hunting buddies!

Not going to lie!!  Read the first two pages and now the question...Age limits???  Iv'e been hunting with my boys since the oldest was 9, 14 now.  Sister moved to Tennessee for college this year and well??  This was his first year bow hunting for elk and he looks forward to many more!!  We currently hunt the NE for deer MF.  Always looking to add to the camp.  It's very dynamic 2-12 depending on who can get time off and what kids they're bringing..once had it up to 16!!!  For the 4 day hunt lol.  Anyway,  we have some room for anyone that is just starting out or just wants to join for company.  As far as Elk goes...it's a 3 man camp and we hunt the east side, manashtash, and would love company or to join up!

Awesome invite.  Unfortunately I am laid up after knee surgery.  Hope to get out for late archery season though.  I think we have the beginnings of a camp for next year.

I was invited to join a new hunt camp this year with some members of HuntWA and feel I have some new life long friends this last week.

I know its hard to start or get in to a good hunting camp, and for me, camp comradery is about as important as where I hunt. The people in camp can make a bad season not look so bad  :dunno:

I'm still interested but elected to eastern modern for elk this year since my archery options were limited. Sign me up to help pack out successful hunters if even to put some names to faces this year.  Next year, I'm in.
