Title: Everett Coho Derby
Post by: snocohunter on September 18, 2013, 06:33:53 AM
Who is going to be out chasing that $10000 cash prize? I have been hearing a lot of excellent reports from several people. If i can find a seat I'll be out there. My buddy I always fish with text me last night and said his girlfriend might have corked my spot in his boat  :yike:

I will be out there. Good luck getting a spot, that sucks when you get bumped. My boat will more than likely be full the rest of the season. It's amazing how many friends you get when you have a boat!  :chuckle:

I'll be out there chasing $10K but more likely just have some great laughs and put some fish in the freezer.

Even guys with boats want to get in your boat!

I been out with Ripper and Co. one time, and I'll just say this dude can flat catch fish.  Tell Nathan thanks again for handling all of our heavy work, and I got that game

Will do Skillet, have you been out lately? I wish I could get out after work, only fishing weekends isn't enough for me. Are you fishing the derby?

Just that bite last Sunday morning.  Had planned on going up with my buddy to help set up his Peaches ML Quality Bull elk camp on Saturday, but $10K has got me thinking I might have a puncher's chance!

Less than 10 posts into my thread and someone has to stoke the bromance and mention h20 to drock.... :chuckle:

Back on topic, it sucks to have to scramble a bit for a spot but it's better than having to be the guy that owns the boat. i guess maybe i shouldn't have left the debit card at home last time and paid for parking, probably sealed my fate  :bash: I suppose i could drag out my 12' boat and fish the fresh water in the snohomish.

Couple things............there is no bromance......even if it was lovely seeing Drock yesterday evening when he stopped by and dropped off my arrow case.

Next....no elk for me this year. You can see a little blurb of a recap in one of the threads about being ready in the elk section.

Lastly..........I would not discount fishing the river for the derby. In the years past the big males that take the top prizes often come from the Snohomish....You just never know.

Sorry to hear that you didn't get an elk. Sorry about igniting the bromance fire. H20 does bring up a good point, there should be plenty of coho in the Snoho for the small boaters. Go get em then use the money to upgrade your boat!

It was a good hunt......

I've only fished the derby a few years on and off....not sure how often the big one has come from the river but the guessing man in me says at least half the years. One year it was brute hooknose that was caught under the I5 bridge....on a dick nite.

This one of your "on" or "off" years for fishing the derby?

No, sadly, I was not in a blind with the lovely Eva. At least with me she would have a chance to "score".

Were your ears burning or did someone page you?  :chuckle: I text you last time i was across the street to razz you about your boat and crab pots but i got nothing back :chuckle:

I'm definitely not discounting the snohomish river for silvers in the least. But my past experiences with the launches during the derby have made me really hesitate going that route, but it's my backup plan.

I'm just waiting for a pm inbound from someone here offering me a spot. You can attest i'm not a bad boat fishing partner, at least that's what you said after our kokanee trip.

Dang, first year with the new boat in the marina up there and I decide to go to Winthrop with the wife this weekend.  Oh well, will get some scouting time in anyway.  Been fishing waaaaayyyyyy too much anyway.  Lots of silvers in the salt yet as of last Saturday.  Make darned sure you have some herring with you this weekend.  We outfished every boat around us.

I'd fish with you anytime. Nah...my ears weren't burning...I just spend way to much time on here......

The crowds can be pretty crazy for the derby but it is such a different crowd than your typicall humpy run morning that it flows fairly well. When I've fished I've put in the day before, docked it, and slept on the boat both nights. Much easier that way.

I have a buddy from work fishing the river today.

We always stick to the tried and true for the derby in the salt, assorted colors of hoochies and ace hi's, and combinations of the two. Of course some herring strips, and coho killers, bucktail, etc.

Weather may push us into the river on sunday though, if it gets too rough.

Went one for two last night.  80-85 on the cables, community holes.

Good luck out there tomorrow, fellas!

You talking herring strips or using whole herring? Taking my son on a friends boat for the derby I know it will be a zoo but the reports I keep seeing online are nothing short of amazing 30 boats checked yesterday at Everett with over 100 fish!

We use them whole and strips cured with salt to keep them from falling apart so fast. Both will work in different situations. Strips are quick and easy to use also.

Quick question on the whole herring - how do you rig them?  Just nose hook them behind a hootchie or streamer, I'm guessing? Maybe a helmet?  :dunno:

The real question is what prize will be offered up for the Hunt Wa member highest on the final leader board for the tourney?  I'll offer an introduction to Barbour Outfitters (he he)...

Anyone up for a little fun side competition?

google it, couple ways to do it on youtube. i've always hooked them through the nose, and then in the side. some guys do 2 hooks in the side and a toothpick for the bend. Others can add their thoughts, i'm no herring pro.

On our way out now. Beat the rush at the launch. What a difference a half hour makes. I'm in for the competition. Maybe we can rendezvous after the awards tomorrow so you can all drool over my big check or maybe my new boat. Guess we'll see. Good luck and stay safe everyone.

Fishing was slow today. We hit 2 early then 1 more later on around 8am. 4, 6 and 7 pounds. I hope the weather isn't as bad tomorrow as predicted. I know today was way nicer than the forecast. Good luck to all the fishers tomorrow.

Fishing was hot for me this morning. I went 5 for 6 today and the boat went 6 for 8. The uv purple haze hoochie and ace hi fly insert with a strip of herring kept getting lit up. Starting at 85 feet and down as deep as 140. We kept the first fish, and released 3 in the 5-7 lb range once we had 2 that were in the 9-10 lb range. The bigger fish absolutely crushed the squid and hooks were buried in the mouth and around the nose on the one. No way he was coming off, thankful for heavy leader. Things really slowed down after about 1030 for us. Biggest fish was mine at 8.93 by the time we got him weighed. Leader board showed 14.07 in 1st place when I looked. With the high wind forecast tomorrow we are playing it safe and heading for the snohomish. Fishing with a different buddy who got skunked today since he has an empty boat for tomorrow.

We got 2 today fishing North of Mukilteo. It was way to rough and windy to fish Possession today. There were some brave souls out there, but after about 15 minutes we went back to the area around the Boeing dock. Our fish went 7.65 and 7.28. Looks like I owe snocohunter a 5 spot. PM me your address and I'll drop it in the mail.

Keep the $5, and maybe take me fishing with you one of these days and we will call it good. I was about five people away from the last of the grab bag prizes. Got a fillet knife and some other junk. Not a bad weekend I guess.

If purple stuff is working in the sound, would you try plunking in the river with some purple spin-n-glos?

The river was a different story. I will be fishing it going forward with Dick nites, wiggle warts and blue fox spinners for the most part. Yesterday i couldn't find anything to bite though. I don't know that the color combo was the only factor, sometimes its that particular flashers movement and presentation that makes a difference. Longer leaders or shorter, etc.
