Title: Anyone have a good winthrop, twisp achery hunt?
Post by: adictd2hunting on September 18, 2013, 10:39:01 PM: I was wondering if anyone had any success over in winthrop twisp area for achery. Ive hunted over there for 7-8 years now. So im not looking for secret spots ( i have my own ) lol. im just wondering if you seen a good number of deer. It just seems like the last few years. I havent seen as many as i have in the past.

Post by: spin05 on September 18, 2013, 11:27:18 PM: Heading over Friday to hunt with my son. You are correct thou. When we first started going there 7 or 8 years ago. Used to count over 300 deer from the time we hit the valley floor all the way to Winthrop....Will give a report next week

The local biologist is a total liar about the situation. Just look at the deer road kill number, it used to be over 400 per year and now it's less than 200, there's your study. Anything else is lies.

If you happen to be where the pack is ranging, you are screwed. I was surprised with numbers of deer in areas that don't normally have them that much. I think its all about adjusting to the wolves in the area. Deer behavior is certainly changing. There are several packs in the valley. Labelling them as the lookout pack by the state is a joke. In reality the lookout pack is made up of several critters in a fairly localized area.

Its just good to know where the pack or packs are at to know what expect. I usually hunt the open country anyways. Spot and stock if possible.

Bone, what areas were the packs (multiple) ranging in?
I realize that changes daily, just curious.

When I was there in June, we saw over 10 deer, cat kills in the campground I can't remember the name, it is the one with the little island in the river up East Chewuch. Also looked like it took out over a dozen geese as well.

I agree with everything you said but the deer kill signs are not accurate. That was a pilot program and the funding is gone so the deer kill numbers havent been kept track of for the signs for a while.

I'm sure the increase of wolves and cats has its share of blame for this decline but my belief is that the amount of anterless deer be harvested in that area during bow season is having a large impact as well. I've seen a consistant decline in deer numbers sense the antlerless season was implemented years back. :twocents:

We got one for dinner with the bow. Hunted lower and saw a few .No shooter bucks. Went to twisp for the last day and saw a lot more deer over there. Again all smaller bucks thou and doe's. Got some good fishing in at Davis lake sat afternoon for a few hours. Here is a pic of son with the grouse he shot.

We keep going back because we like the area. And habit.
Last year we did not see one buck. And we hunted the entire season every day.

I hunt the twisp area mainly. And seen a few shooters last year but just couldnt close the gap. And seen a couple on private property but thats tyipical. We also did some pretty good fishing at a little no name lake. Wheres davis lake at?

Davis is more towards Winthrop out by the golf course. Its usually lights out for the trout. We only got 5 in about 2hrs on this trip

I remember in the 1970's when the season ran from early October through the beginning of November. And they also used to issue over 1000 doe tags in the Perrygine unit alone.
My bet is on the wolves and cats.

In my opinion I think that unit is being mismanaged along with predator issues. I'm not a gun hunter complaining about bow hunting opportunities, I bow hunt and see the amount of does being poled out of there every year an am having a hard time believing its not having a big impact on the herd.
