Title: Back from Saskatchewan 2013
Post by: Goldeneye on September 24, 2013, 09:36:16 PM
Well, I'm back.  It's a 22 hr drive one way.  Do it in two stages.  Drive to Great Falls Montana the first day and then on to our destination in Saskatchewan.  No issues at the border either way.  On the way back the US border patrol guards couldn't believe we didn't drink all our beer we had up there.  I explained that since we were getting up at 3:30 every morning that partying wasn't really possible.  I asked if they wanted what we had.  They then asked their C.O. and he said no.  Good guy's none the less.

The only birds they asked to see were the ones we brought back for taxidermy.  I'm getting a heavily barred spec taxied.  The other guys in our group are getting a couple stove pipe neck pure white snows and another nice spec done.

We were up there a little early for the heavy Snow goose migration.  We did kill a double banded Ross goose that was 13 years old and had a money band on it ($30).  We took 3 sub species of Canada goose (Richardson's, Lessor, and what I believe to be Hudson Bay), Ross goose, Blue goose and Specklebelly's.  We got mainly mallards for Ducks with just a few pintails (we tried not to shoot them as we agreed to try for all drake mallards in the take).  Unfortunately there are no duck hunt pictures since we hunted them every afternoon until dark.  We did also harvest a couple Sandhill cranes.

My lab retrieved about 160 geese and around a 100 ducks.  She was pretty wiped out when we finished our hunts.  She was comatose in the back seat of the truck until we hit the border on our way home.

This is a good hunt to do about every few years.  It's the way hunting should be.  I encourage anyone thinking about it to do a hunt.  PM me if you would like referral to excellent outfitter.

There are different length hunts.  3 Days (3 morning goose hunts and 3 afternoon duck hunts) with all license, lodging, meals, game processing included will hit you for about about 2K.  The daily cost goes down the more days you hunt with them.

You can freelance too.  We tried that too with limited success.  Turned into more of a check out the area tour which worked for me as the country is beautiful and the wildlife is incredible.  We saw Moose, Antelope, Whitetail, Mule deer, Antelope, Fox, and Coyote.

Awesome! Congrats on a great hunt! Someday I'll make it to Sask. or Alberta for a waterfowl hunt. Sure sounds fun!

Very nice, that's a lot of geese!  And, love the sandhill.  Have you eaten it yet?  Any good?

I have not eaten these yet.  I have however eaten Sandhill previously.  They call them ribeye in the sky.  I think they are pretty tasty.  You don't get as much meat off of them as you would think.

We were offered a targeted Sandhill hunt the last afternoon.  Team vote was to hunt ducks.  Much more action with them.

I agree, here's a mount I did from the trip I  did 2 years ago.  A nice blue with a real old Ross goose that has the heavily warted dragon beak.

that's a cool setup, that old Ross is really cool!  here's mine from my Missouri trip. I want to make another MO trip for but nobody ever wants to go with, people dont' realize out here how amazing 1.8 million snows are during the conservation season.

Since this turned into a snowgoose mount thread - I just got an update from the taxi on my blue goose that he has.  Shot this guy up in Saskatchewan this spring for the conservation hunt.

That Ross is awesome.  Great looking bird.
