So i looked back a couple years and found where this was talked about, was gonna post on there but red flag said to start a new thread. Is it still legal,as in right now to bait cougar, bobcat, and everything else other than bear?
-
Yes, you can bait all you mentions just not for bear.
-
only bear and game birds are illegal to bait. anything else, cougs yotes bobs deer elk moose etc, perfectly legal (for now)
ive heard very limited things about people successfully baiting cougars tho. if anybody HAS done it, what did you use, what time of year, what age / gender of cat, snow/weather conditions, was it blind baiting or did you have reason to believe a cougar was close?
any other pertinent info would be cool.
-
It can be done for Cougs but you need fresh meat
-
Or find a fresh cougar kill as they will be back.

I sucessfuly baited a cougar using cut up deer scraps. The cat was 80 to 100 lbs and it was in December. I knew there were cats in the area and when I was putting the scraps and cam out, I was hearing some chirping noises up on the hill above me.The next day I went and checked the cam and all the stuff was buried. Cat show up an hour after I left, went back the next day couple hours before dark and the cat showed up the last half hour light.

I've heard that beaver an horse meat are the best for baiting cougars. Not sure how you'd secure any of that though :dunno:

Now that ucwarden is retired, you can buy venison just about anywhere! :chuckle: :chuckle: j/k, don't do that. :bdid:

Stillborn calves. The dairy farmers have to pay to have them hauled away, so they're glad to get rid of them. Later in season when it's colder meat doesn't sour as quick. Fed mine 3 before I got him.

Appletinis for cougars. Brings 'em right in.

Not totally accurate....the more seasoned cougers may be conditioned to the classic bait....the cosmo. It is an old standby and should not be tossed out.

I defer to the learned one!

How long does Cosmo work as an effective bait until it "spoils"?
Does the magazine need to be less than two weeks old to be effective?
-
Valid question....in my trapping days I never saw a cosmo that even got the chance to get warm and turn. Usually, when stalking their own prey, cougers are known as "gulp and go", very aggresive and once they get a taste for tender vittles they take bait very redily.
