Title: Helped my buddy bag his first bird.
Post by: SpokaneSlayer on October 28, 2008, 03:12:03 PM
I know the season is long over but I happen to have my camera at work and forgot about this picture.  Here's the story:

A buddy of mine only got to hunt one day during the spring season and really wanted to get his first turkey.  So I took him up with me while I was deer hunting as I'd been seeing tons of birds come through.  So we set up at about 3 pm, me in my ground blind and him sitting against a tree to my left.  An hour goes by and nothing, then we hear "yelp, yelp, yelp".  That got our attention.  A few minutes later, 3 hens poke their head up coming up the hill.  Crap.  I know my partner really wants a tom.  So, the hens mosey on in, then the whole flock follows.  Suddenly there's like 20 turkey's feeding 30 yds in front of us.  The whole time I'm thinking, "Dude, wait for it."  I hear "click" as he flips the safety.  He's got his bird picked out.  The hens out front heard it.  Busted!  Well they turn and start to move away to our left, which left a clear shot on the biggest tom in the flock.  Bang!  That tom flopped over like you had swung at his head with a bat in teeball.  I was so excited, I didn't even bother to unzip the door to my ground blind, just jumped out the front window.  Needless to say, my buddy was pumped.  Not your typical way to hunt fall turkey's, no busting up the flock and no calling.  Just waited.  I had them birds patterned from bowhunting all month and knew we'd get a shot at one.

Not quite sure.  I looked around to see if I could find them but didn't see them lying around.

Good job! Nice bird. Love seeing friends and family get there first bird. After practically begging a friend of mine for 4 years to let me take wim turkey hunting he finally gave in.  I called in a big tom within 5 minutes of shooting lite on opening morning. He turned into a turkey hunting freak. He owns every call and has read every book and scheduals his vacation time around opening week. He's insanely hooked.
