When I first bought it, not so much. It had the factory red rubber butt pad on it that just as well have been steel. Shot it the day I bought it with 250 grain grand slams. After 3 rounds, my shoulder was done. :P
The stock wasn't fitted exactly right. I had my neighbor (gunsmith, now retired) bed the action, float the barrel and put a Pachmyr decelerator pad on it. Love it now. Have not practiced with it past 600yds. But very accurate now. On the100yd bench after the first cold clean barrel shot, the grouping is mickey mouse ears in the rest. The rifle shoots better than I do. ;) Then again, I can say that about all my rifles. :D

If you wait a second someone will quote the game laws explaining why you can't use that for elk. :chuckle:

I had that same gun in a 338 ultra could not get it to shoot under 3 inch groups so I sold it did yours shoot good or is that the upgrades you are going to do wish I had done some work to it instead of selling it

105 Berger VLD

I'll be hunting elk with this one this year:

I'm a big fan of the medium bores (over 30 caliber), so most of my guns are in great elk calibers. Here are a couple of my "elk guns" I like to use a different gun each day. That way I can rationalize each one of them. :chuckle:
Here's my 300 RUM. :chuckle:

The 375 BME. For when the elk are way out there. The cartridges in the picture are 6mm BR, 308, 300wsm, 338/375, and 375 BME.

The 338/375 Striker. I have 2 rifles in the same caliber as well. Everybody loves the matched pair rifle/handgun!

The only one I don't have a good picture of is the one I call "the Mule". That's the Ruger Hawkeye Alaskan in 375 Ruger. It is without a doubt my go to, work horse, gotta go kill stuff gun. It's the only one that's always sighted in and ready to go with a handful of 260gr Accubond handloads just sitting and waiting. I've beat the snot out of in the last few years and it's still dead on every time I shoot it.

Left port on the .375 is cool.
It's great until I need to extract a loaded round. Then I need to pull the bolt. A fired case just barely fits through the port.

I plan on using my AR-15 .450 Bushmaster with 250 grain FTX for elk this year on the west side.

Yes
At 500 the .243 is a little better than even
At 800 the .243 beats the .308 by 20%
Using real world velocities and the Berger 175 VLD in the 308 @2750, (973 FP @ 800 yards) and Berger 105 VLD in the 243 @2975, (767 FP @ 800 yards) the 308 has more energy from the muzzle all the way out to 1760 yards.
-
2750 fps seems pretty fast to me for a .308? A 175 grain bullet in a .308 should be seeing speeds of about 2600 fps.
I have no interest in them though so I could be wrong.
-
;)
Idaho Gal, is it just me or does your husbands muzzle break look crooked! :dunno: Maybe it's just me! Are you hunting this Year?
Lets see your Safe Queen :chuckle:
-
it's just you 400.

Yeah maybe!
Or maybe it's the city park camp ground that makes it look funny :chuckle:

You know that's my backyard looser.

Kimber Montana in 300wsm
2.5lb trigger job and Break
Nice and light for those long hikes into nowhere.
-
Kimber Montana in 325 WSM topped with a Swarovski 3-10x42. 200gr Barnes Triple shocks in front of 65grs of AA 3100. Its done the job on three elk in the last 5 years.
As far as the 243 having more energy then the 308 isnt really that accurate. 90% of the time the 308 has more energy. But both will do the trick on an elk if used correctly.

Run the numbers for a 165 gr Gameking (.404 bc) and a 105 gr Berger VLD hunter ( .532bc). The .243 AND .308 are even at 450 and the .243 takes over from there.

Might as well run the 110 grain round nose out of the 308 and the 115 Dtac out of the 243, that way you can catch the 308 RFN.

Actually the .243 DTAC would have at least 5x the energy of a 110 round nose.

I'll be toting the 8x57mm with 200gr partitions.

Looks a lot like my sendero. What mods have you done? I see the brake and cheek pad. Mine has a defensive edge brake and Wyatt box and is bedded. Just use a cheek rest that straps on. I'm shooting 215 bergers.

622yds-208Amax-93.5-retumbo-when i stay off the coffie it will print 3to5inch at a 1000yds,and shoot 3 times a week,we have a nice rang with steel nock down targets to 1003yds,makes it fun to practic.
Looks a lot like my sendero. What mods have you done? I see the brake and cheek pad. Mine has a defensive edge brake and Wyatt box and is bedded. Just use a cheek rest that straps on. I'm shooting 215 bergers. What load?my hunting Buddy likes bergers and has talked about the 215,they do good work, same as mine.I sure wold like a new 34mm night force,on one of there rifle,s.but kind of like driving a Mercedes and still looking at a bentley.have you had any chance to put blood on the ground yet?

Thanks, yeah I love the real wood approach to my hunting rifles. :chuckle:
And Yes, I am on track to hunt this year. I have a planned follow up CT scan next week to search for irregularities in my lymph system. Hopefully I get a good report card then.
Thanks for asking sir!

P
confusing quote to read. :chuckle: I shoot 215 bergers with 90.2 grain retumbo and a coal of 3.800 fed 215 primers. The only thing ive killed with that load is a small bear. Great performance. I hear ya on the night force! I have a vortex vile post ffp on mine.
