I am thinking about it but only if the price is right as I really like my Trykon XL.
I am considering the Katera XL (need to shoot it again). Anything else I should take a look at?
I generally like longer ATA (36" plus) and higher brace heights (7.25" or more) as I generally shoot better with a more forgiving bow.
-
I have the trykon xl as well, I love it but in the last 3 years hoyt has made the bows, better, lighter, more forgiving and faster...... the katera xl is sweet but the alphmax 35 is sweeter and thats what I just ordered..... go shoot one and you will see.......
-
im switching my cougar III se to the back up spot and either picking up a katera or a newer martin not 100% on wich one yet i have more shooting to do
-
I am I am. I just do not know what i am going to get. I switched to the rifle for a couple years and I am done. Coming back to STICK ANS STRINGS!!!! I need to start to look. I have a Hoyt right now but I am looking at a mathews or PSE. i will have to wait and see.
-
I am and I don't know what I'll be getting just yet.
-
I know I have too, but not sure what I'm gona get either. I can tell you it will be a Mathews or hopefully a Bowtech.

Thanks. I will make sure to shoot the alphamax before making a final decision. I would probably give the nod to the Katera right now because it is seasoned and has been out for awhile with no significant issues. I tend to shy away from the latest and greatest until it has proven itself even though I am sure there will be nothing wrong with it.
-
I doubt if I actually will buy an new one, my '04 Bowtech Patriot is still in perfect condition and I love it....BUT if I do buy a
new bow, it will be the new Bowtech Admiral. I checked one out at Sportsman's and the thing is incredible!
-
After 10 years loving the same bow...ive bought a new one...after lots of research i narrowed it down and then i shot Tmike's Bow Tech Guardian and had to have one...so...as of one day ago...I DO.
But Ill have to wait for august to shoot it! :bash:
-

We'll get you hooked up Charlie!
As for a new bow - I will be getting a couple, but not paying for them... :chuckle:
BowTech Sentinel and Admiral for now, I can't part ways with my Guardian though so I'll keep it around...
-
I'm a little interested in those new PSE X-Force bows, they are available in my draw and smokin fast. Anybody here shoot one?

i have 2 an 07 70 lber for hunting shoots a 500 grain arrow at 290 :P
and a 08 60 lber for target, set at 55 lbs shoots 300grain arrow at 330 8)
both are set at 29 inch draw. i am interested in trying the new ones, different cams and more let-off.
-
Welcome to the forum - :hello: And that's a great choice! :chuckle:
-
Got my Admiral. And this will be my elk rig.
-
Not me! I got a new 08 allegiance in feb,and love it.
-
I'll be buying a new bow however I'm still trying to figure out what I want.
-
I am new to bow hunting, but believe in always having a 2nd gun/ bow at a minimum, so depending on my success this year, I may get a 2nd bow in '09. Likely would get another Parker, such as the Blackhawk, or possibly a Mission.
-
I would if I could sell one of my 3 Trykons, Don't know what I was thinking of, Thought I needed one for hunting out of treestands, one for Elk and one for Deer/Bear. :dunno:
-
I want to get a target bow/backup but I haven't decided. I really like my black ice but I want a longer ATA bow for target shooting. I have shot some of the new hoty's/bowtech admiral and man are there cams mean to my shoulders :bdid:.
-
I just picked up my new Mathews DXT a couple of weeks ago and I am loving it. :twocents:
-
Just decided to switch to archery still need alot of research to do.
-
Welcome aboard, new england native! Bowhunting is a blast.
-
You are close to a pretty good shop New England. Ask around for the Lucky Shot archery shop. Shouldn't be more than 15 minutes from you. Good selection and nice guys.
Welcome aboard.
-
yes I have heard of lucky shot and I was told to go and shoot some bows there
-
I'm leaning towards the Hoyt Alphamax 32 now.
-
I bought the new bowtech captain the day it came out. Best bow I have owned, very smooth and fast with very many options. Awesome bow
-
I just shot the alphamax 32 & 35 and now I am torn between the dxt and the alphamax 32. Wow, I have been waiting for hoyt to shave some weight off there tanks and they finally did. Does anyone know when the new mathews line coming out?
-
Does anyone know when the new mathews line coming out?
See post in Archery, but the shops will have there test bow on Monday supposed to go 340 and the other 360 fps.
JBar
-
Rumor's of the new Mathew's shooting 360fps!!!
-
I hope this works but this is the add floating around on the Mathews forum. I thought I heard Muley Crazy magazine accidentally released it.
-
Well I've always been a Mathews guy but I think I might defect this year. I've got my eye on the Elite Z28...330fps with an 8" brace height gets me excited. I'm not going to make my move until I see what Mathews has to offer next week but it will probably be the Elite.
Coon
-
That Z28 is definitely a winner, the wall on that is about as solid as you can get.
-
i would take a look at some of the archery research bows. i bought one this year and they are awesome.
-
I ordered a new custom recurve last winter. I should receive it sometime around January.
-
still the alphamax for me, i also love the guys that buy based on speed... from my tests with a hooter shooter fixed blades group best at 260-280fps anything past that and they are not that great...... so 300+ fps to me is worthless
-
I for one would never turn down the opportunity to shoot a faster bow. Heck why not shoot a bow that shoots 280fps at 60lbs rather than 70lbs? I'm sure that elite coon is looking at will do that. Can't go wrong with an 8" brace height. Have you shot an elite z28 Paul? Or do you only test Hoyt bows? I get more of a kick out of the guys that are so tunnel visioned by the brand that they won't even try another company. I've got a die hard mathews buddy that drinks the KOOL-AID and won't even test out the other models. Just assumes that they aren't as good as the mathews bows.
-

+1 - Well said Hoyt! I couldn't agree more!
-
Thank you archery228 and Bullcanyon.. yes I have shot the Elite and any other bow youn can name, remember shooting a bow is one of the things I do for a living.... what do you do? so dont question my taste, I do prefer hoyt but matthews and other companys make a good bow as well, my point was with fixed blades, they dont group well past about 280ft a second, maybe they group good enough for you past that speed but I want 3 in groups at any distance with my broadheads and in ALL the tests I have done with a hootershooter 280 fps was the max they grouped tight enough, also a fast bow like 300-360fps requires a perfect shooter to shoot well, those speeds are so much harder to control and magnify any flaw you have in form etc......... so again..... anything that shoots over 280 really to me is worthless.......... my trykon xl at 60lbs shoots 270fps and my new alphamax will be around 280 at 70lbs.... perfect for broadheads........thats one other thing I love about hoyt, they have not got into the "speed" market and sacarficed accuracy for speed.. the katera shoots 321 obo...... not super fast these days.......
-
I run heavy equipment, but that don't mean I don't know my shizznit. You obviously didn't read my post. Just bypassed the meat and taters of it. I'll say it again so you have an opportunity to hopefully catch it this time. WHY not shoot a bow that will get me the speed I'm looking for at 60lbs rather than 70lbs? The elite has an 8" brace height and is not a super short ata bow. The speed I'm after is 280fps ish. That is why my allegience is turned down. I don't want a 300fps hunting bow, but I do like a bow that can kick that speed out with out being cranked way up. I've been in one of those stare downs at full draw for longer than I wanted. Lower poundage is better in my world.
I think we're after the same result. If I can't kill a chew can at 60yds every time. I'm not happy.
-
I bought a New Bear Element last year, great bow, I love it. Won't be buying another for some time. I used my last bow for 16 years. I can't justify buying a new bow every couple of years esp with how much they go for nowadays.
-
I got a katera last year and love it
-
Hey Hoytstaffshooter did you order the Alphamax 32 or 35? I'm leaning towards the 32 but need to go shoot both again because I liked them both so much.
-
Im in Iraq but the wifey got me a 2008 Bowtech Guardian for X mas...and my kid is already slobbering all over it...
Ill take that as a sign he wants one of his own!
I gotta get the spot hog SDP for it now and a whisker biscut and lookout west side roseys
;)

:yeah: Can I have Christmas at your house next year?
-
Very nice bow. My buddy has one and he loves it. Super quiet and it shoots tacks!
-
Hey for you military guys... check out the military discounts from Bowtech..... I am sure all the other manufacturers have something similar too. If you are deployed you can get a guardian shipped to you for $500. Or if you are stateside they will give you 15% off MSRP.
-
I ordered the 35, I like the longer axle to axle length, and its only 6 fps slower and we all know how i feel about that.......... BULLCANYON.. thats good you feel the same way, and I agree with you thats why I shoot 60lbs as well.
-

You ain't kidding!
Through this program, you can purchase a Guardian bow in Realtree Hardwoods Green HDŽ with accessories for the discounted price of $500. Accessories include a Hostage capture arrow rest, 4 arrow quiver, braided sling, 3-pin fiber optic sight, peep sight, a 4-inch camo stabilizer and 4 arrows.
My wife won't want to hear this news! :chuckle:
-
I think I am going to buy a new Bowtech Admiral.
-
I'm not gettting a new bow anytime soon, but I'd love to make the switch back to the longbow. A Howard Hill bow sounds good to me.
-
I was in Eugene most all of last week for work and stopped by BowTechs pro shop before leaving on Friday. Lets just say if I get a new bow it will be a Admiral.
-
I'm not a split limb fan so I have stayed away from the Bowtech and PSE, that and I just can't afford them. I like the Martin bows and currently hunt with an older MArtin Phantom II. I'm thinking of getting a new Martin bow and have yet to decide on the Warthog, Firecat or the MOAB. I'm leaning more towards the MOAB.
-

Ahh yes, a good place to be and a good choice!
-
why do you not like split limb bows? they are more efficient, lighter and stronger.. also I shot a martin phantom 2 for a year or so before I got my hoyt... fun bow, it got the job done!! my buddy shoots it now and took a huge 4x4 blackie in cali with it this year
-
After selling my Matthews (Z-Max) and not hunting for a few years, I decided it was time to get back in the game. I bought a 2 year old PSE that was hardly used, sweet package that was ready to hunt.
Figured I would use it this year then buy a new Matthews for next year, well, I may just stick with what I have or get a new PSE, though its a bit heavier then my old Matthews, it shoots great, I honestly feel more confident with this bow then I did with my high $$$ Matthews.
I'll definitely kick some tires before I buy anything but I'm definitely impressed with the PSE.
-
I what way are they more efficient? To each his own and mine is I prefer a single limb bow. I don't have a technical reason why I don't care for a split limb, I'm old fashioned and don't care for the look. Plus, I'm hard on my gear when hunting rough terrain and feel a single limb will hold up to a beating when I lose my footing and fall on my 4th point of contact (for the non paratrooper thats butt) or bang it against a rock when scaling around rock ledges.
-
a split limb is more efficient in they are faster then a solid limb for the poundage, also lighter, and todays split limb bows are stronger, alot of solid limb bows crack at the point where the limb goes into the limb pocket, its a weak spot on most, with a split limb you do not have that issue.. but both types of bows are ncie and shoot well..... enjoy
-
I am planning to buy a traditional bow between now and the first of the year. It's been a long time since I shot one, but I am determined to get back into it. Hubby insists I should go the compound route, but thats not what I want right now.
-
I've been researching an upgrade to my Martin Jaguar. I bought my current bow as a starter bow in June since it wasn't much and if I didn't like bowhunting, I could sell it and get some of my money back. Well, as it turns out I really liked archery. While poking around online, I came across Reflex bows. They seemed nice and noticed it's a subsidary of Hoyt. i really like the Growler and had an oppurtunity to shoot one last night at Cabela's. Now I REALLY like it. Any opinions on this choice?
-

I always buy based on speed. My fixed blade broadheads are grouping at 90 and 100 yards coming off my bow at 300 fps.
In fact I have shot three blade fixed broadheads as fast as 352 fps out at 90 yards and grouped up just fine.
At any rate the new Monster XLR8 will most likley be my new bow this coming year. Wonder how fast it will propel my arrows?
-
Check out the new Martins, I shoot a Firecat Pro X, 320 FPS, drives tacks 80+ yards set up for hunting....
They have some new stuff out...http://www.martinarchery.com/firehawk.php

what bow do you shoot right now and how heavy are your arrows and what poundage?
-
Hoyt Hypertech with the Redline cam. 30" inch draw length. My Hunting arrows are Goldtip Biggame 100+ just shy of 30" length.(450 grains depending on the tip). Draw weight to shoot them at 300 fps is 80 lbs. Of course I back down the weight when I step into the woods.
I have posted this before but I have had this setup over 100lbs draw weight screwing around in the shop. At that weight I shot the Goldtip at 360 fps and another arrow of unknown weight at 396 fps.
At any rate shooting the broadheads at these speeds has put to rest, at least for me anyway, the myth that fixed blade broadheads will not fly at extreme speeds. I know they will because I have tested it and accomplished it. That does not mean that anybody will be able to do it. You need near perfect form and the mind set that it can be done. :twocents:
I believe the last time I shot broadheads at 100 yards the impact point was just three or four inches lower than the field points and left to right was spot on.
Anyway these are all just my opinions and observations from things I have done. I hope that they don't steer anybody in the wrong direction. Each person should assess there own abilities and then stay within them.
-
the reflex line of bows are good for the price, basically they take a hoyt parts and mix/match more or less and make reflex... just not quite the same quality as a hoyt but damn close...... still hands down the alphamax for me.. plenty fast at 321 and a nice brace height.. and apparently from some experts on here brace height is the only dertermining factor in a bows performance or accuracy.. so therfore that alone it will be awesome, I have never liked the way any matthews looks/feels in my hand and 360fps at 80lbs with a 5 in brace height.. no thanks..
-
You should be able to pick up a reflex fairly cheap now they don't make them any longer but the warranty should still be the same ( if you buy it new somewhere ). They are really good bows for the money!
-

Brace height is definatley not the only determining factor. All I stated was that brace height has never been a factor for me. It may be for some.
-
Trust me I know thats not the only thing! I was not refering to you
-
Thanks for the info Hoyt. I realize that a true Hoyt is probably of better quality, but I can't afford one. I can pick up a brand new Growler for $350.
-
you can go wrong, thwe reflex is still hoyt just the other parts, like no tec riser or 5 layer lamintated limbs.. they are like the lx or dx of hoyt if you will, for the money it cant be beat
-

get a mission basically the same situation as reflex and hoyt... but who could honestly argue a hoyt against a mathews :)
-
*censored* here we go again!!! :)
-
no doubt about that
-
no doubt about that
oh hoyt staff shooter... i had a trykon xl and yea it wasnt bad except the weight and how loud and the vibrations... in which the bow shop was never able to cure... but i just wanted to know why you dont shoot a better hoyt bow if you shoot for them why wouldnt you shoot the nicest bow they have like the katera over a trykon xl.... or a mathews
-
I have no idea why yours was loud... Mine is as quiet as can be, The last deer I shot my buddy was 20 yrds from me and never heard it go off, also its a hoyt.. id take that bow over any matthews, bear or any other.. I also have a Pro elite I shoot indoors, that was and is the most winning target bow ever. and will set you back $1200 just for the bow.. the new vantage elite is the top target bow now, but ill stick with my Pro Elite.. I also ordered the new alphamax 35 to replace my trykon xl for hunting/3d.. custom of course ;) and last I knew that is hoyts best new bow... also the trykon is accurate as nails, I shot my first vegas 300 round with it... its quiet, fast and no vibration at all, the STS system I put on both my hoyts was just insurance...... they did make a diff though but both were already super smooth without it....
-
Ok it's official, I am going down tomorrow to buy myself an Alphamax 32 and get my daughter a Trykon Jr for Christmas. I'm totally psyched to get the Alphamax but I'm even more excited to get her a compound. I was telling my wife I just had to get my bow now because I couldn't let my daughter have a nicer bow than me :IBCOOL: .

im just givin you a hard time man id be loyal to a company too if i shot for them an i really couldnt tell you why mine was loud but its always fun to bicker about who thinks what is better and why but ive shot both and me personally i like my drenalin better... even better than mathews' new bows and it works for me like your hoyts work for you right .. its all just for fun .. just makin sure you knew i wasnt tryin to get under your skin
-
congrats wapiti, you will no doubt love it. a lady at the club I shoot leauge with has a trykon sport, she loves it.. good luck....
-
Well, my wife put in an order for a Reflex Growler as my Xmas gift! Got it for $290 after cashing in our Cabela's points. I can't wait. So now I will be selling my current bow as soon as I have the new one in my hot little hands to put the money back on the credit card.
-
congrats! enjoy!
-
I plan to, but it will be my first bow and I have no clue what I am doing :'(
-
I did it! I went down and plunked down a bunch of cash on a new Alpha Max 32 for me and a Trykon Jr for my daughter for Christmas. I posted a pic in the Archery forum. :chuckle:
-

I have been shooting Elite's GT500, if your looking for a new bow I highly suggest you take a look at them. there made in Walla Walla Washington too.
I will buy the next released from them. I really like the speed and solid back wall this bow has. Well enough with the ad like post just excited about my bow.
-
The Elite is by Martin and there customer service is second to non. I currently own a Martin and my next bow will be one as well.
-
I have a switchback XT, I have been looking at hte new Matthews line, and might have to fling a few arrows from the Reezen, and Monster. My XT has done me well killing three of my last 4 elk, but I wouldnt mind getting something a little faster, as long as the draw cycle isnt too bad.

No, :bash: The Elite is by Elite archery. Also the best customer service around. ;)
-
:violent1: my bad :sry: had a brain fart and was thinking of Martins X-200 recurve.

Now i am down to Hoyt Alphamax 32 - Mathwes Drenalin or DXT .Still tough choice . I need to find who has Hoyt and Drenalin ,so i can try shoot them ,before making my final choice.Shoot Bowtech ,DXT ,and some bow call limb saver .I like bowtech and dxt ..limb saver wasn't bad only littile heavy .So i guess i am taking my time to choose right bow for me ,and prices will go down too ;) I like Bowtech ,but they have too many problems ,at least what i found about them on internet .Too bad ,otherwise they will be my 1 choice .Please don't start any brand war ,this is just my opinion ,I am just try think loud . So if anybody who leave close around renton area ,have Hoyt Aplhamax 32 or drenalin ,and will let me try them for couple shoots ,it may completed my search .I got feeling soon i shoot Hoyt Alphamax 32 ,is may be my choice :)) Just feel this way ;)
Thank you
I hope my post don't start any brand war .Please don't !

WOW bowtech has problems? im a Bowtech owner and have had no problems with my 08 Allegiance or my 06 Rapture, what problems did you find on Bowtech's? besides the Limb problems the Generals had that bowtech fixed.
-
Alright I have been looking and shooting and settled on a PSE x force TS. I liked the x-force Dream season but did not like the grip they had B.E.S.T. i rather have the wood as it fits my hand way better. I loved the 32 and 35 alpha and the drenalin, but the TS was the best fit for me. Now I need to stick something next year as it has been five years since I picked up a bow to hunt (in washington).... I am waiting for my rest so I can get my arrows and off to the back yard to fling some arrows!!!

I would agree on the bowtech statment, all my buddies that own them say the same thing, they make a good bow though, you can shoot my alphamax 35 anytime...

Same thing about what?? I have never had a problem with any of my BowTech's - not one! But each individual has a different experience and opinion... I think I will continue to shoot them... :chuckle:

that is very true jon..... one day though cam will convince you to cross over the the "dark side"

-
Jon,
I won't tell him what brand i shot for over 20 years before you convinced me to cross over to the "light side". Actually if someone around here would of had one in my draw I could shoot I may not have switched. Don't believe everything you hear on the "internet". :o

I don't say Bow tech is bad bow, matter of fact when i shoot one ,i really like it ,much smoother than my Mathews Zmax .And I like to shoot and feel of Capitan much better than Mathews Reezen .Like i said before ,i am not trying to start any brand war ,please don't follow this path . I am not expericed archer and please don't buy you bow based on my opinion :).Most my information i got from Archery Talk ,but i am not blindly follow it :chuckle: I may buy even 2 bows :) Someone already offer me Guardian for great price ( used ) ,so i will see :)

I was just kidding rover, you can't go wrong with any of the upper end bows. It's just a matter of personal preference. Enjoy whatever you decide to go with.
-
I don't think you'll have a problem with any bow as long as you press it right. I think most problems are with shop techs that couldn't change a flat tire trying to work on bows. Make sure it is done right and you won't have a problem.
Just for the record. The only bow I've seen blow up was a drenalin that was pressed wrong. Can't say they are a bad bow just because of that experience. I've read all that same crap as you on archerytalk, but you have to take that with a grain of salt. Lot's of posts on their are fabricated to beat down or boost up one bow or another.

i agree with you on 100%

I can't decide between the Bowtech Admiral, Captain or the 82nd Airborn. Any advice would be much appreciated.

There are a lot of good bows out there but I am almost convinced to go out and buy the new hoyt alphamax 35. What a sweet shooting bow! Plan B should Plan A be too costly is too pick up a Katera.
Plan C is too upgrade my hoyt trykon with an STS and a new sight.
-
I just ordered the Alphamax 35, I was totally impressed with these bows. I had it in my mind that I was going to be the proud owner of an Elite but after shooting the AM35 I had no choice except to buy the Hoyt. I actually shot a dozen different bows and found the Alphamax and surprisingly the APA Viper to be the 2 nicest shooting bows.
It may take a few months for the wife to get over the $1300.00 for the setup...I used the "it's easier to ask for forgiveness than ask for permission" approach. ;)

I'm pretty much dead set on the Bowtech Admiral. It's fast, super smooth, super quiet and I couldn't feel any torque. However I still havn't shot the SWAT and from what I hear it's awsome so until I do my decision wont be final. But as of right now the Admiral is the greatest bow I have ever shot. Hands down.

09 PSE Bow Madness 366 fps IBO, tested with a new roller guard that hit the market at 388 fps :IBCOOL:
-
Got my new Mathews 27" Reezen 7.0 last Friday and I'm lovin it! :IBCOOL: Spit'n my 435g arrows out at 272 fps. Could get a little more speed with a lighter arrow but why? Draws smooth, very stable and forgiving. Had a little hand shock but I put a simms stablizer on it and seems to have taken care of it. Critters better watch themselves this year!

Some sort of 3-piece takedown longbow for me.
Have not decided which flavor yet.

I just got new Hoyt Alphamax 32 :)
-
Way to go Rover, I love my Alphamax 32. It was a little adjustment for me going from a 37 ata bow to the 32 ata of the Alphamax.
-
Not for me....no major improvements in speed or sound over my LX. Shoot the Reezen lately and it offers absolutely nothing over the LX. They can advertise what they want, but put them on a Chronograph and a sound meter. All the BS goes away real fast. In fact faster then the arrow speed they are claiming.

I upgraded my Martin Jaguar Magnum this year. Got an Elite Ice (Elite is a new company here in Walla Walla). A buddy of mine got a Trykon las year and shot a spike elk at 74 yards. I wouldn't even have taken that shot with my Jag... so I upgraded..
Haven't set up the Elite yet, so I can't say yet how it shoots. I know I have shot 3Ds alongside a couple of guys who have them, and a few times we had to take the target off the stand, lay it on the ground, have one guy stand on it, and 2 guys pulling to retrieve the arrow. THat's what sold me.

Yep ,i love this bow :) Very happy i did bought it ;)

I will be getting my FIRST bow ever amongst other things for the upcoming hunting seasons. My bow is an Alpine Frontier and I really love how it shoots. Got a good price on it too.
-
It's not brand new but new to me. Just got a 2007 Mathews switchback. A customer of mine used it for 7 days during late Entiat last year. Killed a buck with it so it's already broken in. I sure like the way it shoots compared to my Mathews FX.
-
I am also thinking considering getting a new bow and have it narrowed down to a few choices. I like the Alphamax 35, Reflex Ridgeline 34, Bear Truth 2, and possibly the Bowtech Captain or Mathews Drenalin. I have heard good things about both the Hoyt and Mathews bows but not much about the Bear. Does anyone have one or shot one to know anything about it?
-
I shot the bear truth 2 and liked it when i was shopping for bows last year. The only thing I really know about it is that it is supposed to come with a winners choice string, which is a hundred dollars value and the bow is already a great buy.
-
I'm still waiting :'( they sent the wrong bow :'(
-
Baseballstud I have a bear truth2, I like it, it is my first bow. I didn't do a whole lot of comparisons before I bought it but I am real happy with it. The only thing I really don't care for is the bright colors on it but they just came out with an all black model. The only thing that I have changed is the whisker biscuit for a trophy ridge fall away rest. I just had it tested and with my 428 grain arrow it was at 266 fps. I just bought my wife the diamond razor edge that is a great bow.

I was completely dead set on the Bowtech Admiral. But I just read an article on the Hoyt Alphamax 32. In that article the author wrote the most gleaming report I have ever read from a bow report. So now I have to go shoot the Hoyt to see how it compares to the Admiral. Although it is going to have to shoot alot better than the Admiral because it's $100 more expensive. So we'll see. I'll make myfinal decision this week.
