Title: Starting youth archery
Post by: tagemnbagem on October 07, 2013, 11:02:31 AM
Hello

I am looking for advice on bows. I have a small 10 year old girl who is interested in taking up archery. I am not sure if she will ever want to hunt or just keep it as a hobby. Should I start her out with a recurve or a compound? I have heard Diamond nuclear ice is a great youth bow, does anyone have any recommendations?

She is the middle of three daughters 8, 10, and 12. They might also be interested so if there is a bow that they could all use or a recurve and a compound you recommend that would be fantastic! Thank you for your time!

check out the JOAD programs or the NASP programs available to kids.
Re curves are good but some times kids have a hard time pulling them back until they get strong enough. Genisis bows are good because their weight is the same all the way through the draw, not so with re curve.  :twocents:

Nock point has a good starter program.  I was up there a few weeks ago and was impressed by the amount of people flinging arrows.  Talked with Bill(owner I think) and he explained they have all age groups shooting.

If I knew how to post video....I would show you a 4 yo shooting a recurve.  10 yo should be able to start with a beginner recurve or even a bow like the mathews genesis....posible the diamond or bear apprentice.  Depends on how her upper body strength is.

genesis is the bow used in the National Archery in School Program (NASP), helps keep the playing field level when all schools across the country get to the nationals. who knows, if your girl sticks with it she may be a national champion archer someday!  :IBCOOL:
