Title: Plans to take your dog to Canada? Hope it isn't before the next 30 days-
Post by: Happy Gilmore on October 08, 2013, 09:30:50 AM: New rules went into affect for taking your dog into Canada. You must apply for a permit 30 days PRIOR to traveling. Sucky deal. I wonder if they're being lenient about it with hunting season hitting. I just heard about this the other day and thought I'd share it to get the word out.

Post by: stevemiller on October 08, 2013, 02:15:29 PM: This doesnt surprise me at all,we cant bring things over here either.We do the same here in America all pets coming from over seas must go through these test and quarantines.A lot of diseases come in countries this way.How do you think parvo got here? :tup:

All the border guards were interested in was the rabies paperwork. I am told that about 5% of the time they will ask for the health certificate. I offered the health certificate and they declined the need to see it. No one on either side of the border said anything about a import permit.

I looked at your link. It looks like it's specifically for domestic commercial dogs. My dog I brought up to hunt with us does not fall in that category per their definition. I don't think you'll be affected if you take your dog up there. Just have the rabies paperwork and health certificate and your good.

The health certificate is listed on their webpage. My vet told me that about 5% of the time you get a over zealous border agent that will require it. Our border agents only cared about the rabies. They also liked looking at the pretty guns we were bringing up. LOL!

One thing that did surprise me. I got pulled into a office and was questioned on why I went to court in 2011. It took me a few minutes but I remembered. I contested a traffic ticket. They had that I went to court in their system and I believe were looking at how I responded to the questioning. Guess I gave the proper response because they let me in.

If just hunting, no issue. If for the purposes you listed, I guess you'll be getting a permit if your serious about going.

Dog shows, FTs etc all you have to have is the rabies, health cert and show that you are entered in an event. If you are going up for training, not sure on that. Shipping IN for breeding, that has been a problem for a little bit. Ran into that 3 years ago.

Latest press release: 10-9-2013- if you do not have dog entered in an event for commercial purposes you must go through the permit process which takes 30 days.

FOR DOGS UNDER EIGHT MONTHS OF AGE ENTERING CANADA FROM THE UNITED STATES—Dog owners and exhibitors with dogs under eight months of age are now required to present proof of their entry in a dog show, trial, or other competitive event when crossing the American-Canadian border. This is in addition to the already-existing requirements of:
A rabies certification (does not apply to animals three months old or younger)
a veterinary certificate of health whether or not they are accompanied by their owner
a microchip
