So my dad just passed on a big bear because it's wearing a radio collar.
Would you do the same?

Nope. Boom city!

Has your Dad said why he didn't take the shot? Did he just not think it was legal because of the collar or was there some other concern?
-
I would of shot at the collarr :dunno:

Just shows your dad is very observant. There fore a safe and ethical hunter. As for shooting it. I would in a heart beat. No laws against it. The reason it is not is most studies include a survival/ mortality estimate. Hunting is part of mortality. Making a law against it would bias information collected.

One of the largest bears I've ever seen had a blue collar on him. I tried to move in on him for a couple of hours 2 years ago and couldn't close the deal. The collars are on them because they're relocated and probably a nuisance bear elsewhere. This bear I saw was within 1/2 mile of a housing complex so he didn't learn much from his relocation. He had a larger body size than the one I got last year and that one measured 21 5/16. I'm still looking for the blue collared bear!

I shot one a few years back with a collar. You do have to return collar to game department and may not be able to eat the meet if he's been collard in last 30 days.

Why wouldn't you be able to eat the meat D-rock. Is it because of an injection the bear got from the game dept. or because the bear was eating something it shouldn't have been? Do you have to give them the bear or does the game dept. just strongly suggest you not eat the meat?
-
Because of the chemical they get put to sleep with can stay in Their system for 30 days. I had to call butcher and get my meat put on hold until I heard back from game department. Mine was okay to eat but I would have been a little mad if I shot a bear for no reason.

Very interesting

I understand that in cases like this you may be able to get a replacement tag and keep the hide/head etc if the meat is found to be not safe for consumption......I could be wrong.

Very interesting; you learn something every day.
I'll be sure to keep this in mind on the off chance that I shoot a collared bear.

MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY! He will never live this down! And apparently is was a chocolate one too!

So now that I'm back here's the whole story as I heard it...
My Dad (69 y/o) and his brother (60 y/o) were parking the truck to take a walk on an old skidder road. While parking the bear strolled out of the brush 30 feet away!
My Uncle said BEAR and sat there not reaching for his rifle, my Dad hopped out and was putting a round in when he noticed the collar. So they leaned against the truck and watched it feed on shrooms and tear apart a stump for 10 minutes.
I ended up hiking to that spot later in the day and when they told me the story I was DUMBFOUNDED! The paw prints were good sized too a bit wider than my palm. Needless to say he will never live it down.
:bdid:
We were up in the Stevens Pass/Lake Wenatchee area and believe it or not had a young Bull Moose walk through camp on Tuesday!
