Looking to hunt elk in goldendale late season archery any ideas where the few elk hangout?
-
Few and far between. You're not going to find the answer on the internet.
-
:chuckle: 10's of thousands of acres. Very few elk. Get way back in there behind the gates and look for sign.

@CamoDup
Well this is hunting forum where people share info and pics and stories so i thought it would be a darn good place to start. Some folks might be in that area over modern or early archery and have spotted a few here and there. Thats the luxury of having internet to communicate with people.

You are right leedh31, this is a hunting forum and most guys are real nice people, however good elk spots in this state that the masses don't already know about are few and far between. I for one would never divulge my elk hunting places on a public forum. My own family is blindfolded, and driven in circles, and walked miles out of the way before I put them in one of my spots. That way they can never find it on their own! :chuckle:
Why don't you start off telling us something about yourself instead of asking for info right off the bat? :dunno:
-
I can respect that, I was just curious if anyone had any advice is all. I guess they call it hunting for a reason I'll post my pics of my bull when i get back :chuckle:
-
Reality check! I hunted it hard for a week 2 years ago, started hiking hours before light most days to get as far back as I could up towards the divide. We hunted from Grayback all the way to Satus. Didn't see one elk. We did find sign in several areas, but those elk are constantly on the move and there are very few of them. Good luck and I hope you shoot a monster, there are some in there.
-
unless is snowing they will be hard to find if they aren't pushed down the pass. 3 or 4 years ago I got into a small herd while deer hunting, same trip my buddy found a small 5 point elk shed, but i haven't been back up there since.

Thanks, those are the few tidbits of info that help. Ill be deer hunting as well so hopefully ill run into an elk or two. Ill be mostly on the soda springs side north of that in the timber. I may get over into satus a bit but we'll see.
-
Deer hunting an area is a great opportunity to scout for another specie you plan to hunt. I've hunted it alot in the past and have only bumped a few. Late season with snow on the ground is a huge help. I'll be in that same area this weekend, best of luck to ya!
-
Oh and be aware of TICKS! Sons a guns are everywhere. Only time i've ever got ticks in November in 20 degree weather was there :yike:
-
Got any bigger pics of that buck in your profile. Looks nice. Is that a goldendale buck? Whereabouts did you get him?
-
Here are some goldendale elk. This year was one of my best seasons.
-
I use to hunt Goldendale area a lot. Have friends that still hunt it extensively. We've seen a good number of them on trail cameras, but other than during spring turkey none of us have actually seen the elusive Goldendale elk in person. A guy that goes out and bags one East of W.Klickitat boundary during the season has either done some fine homework or got dang lucky IMO. Probably a little of both ;)
Good luck to you leedh31. Would like to see that picture of your Golden'elk when you get it!
BTW - Welcome to the site.
-
I assume private ground that you got those elk?
Goldendale elk
-
Nope I've never hunted private land. I did my homework and got lucky. We got in to a group of three bulls, my buddy and I both harvested 6x6s and the 5x5 ran off.

Timber ground or rez?
-
We got them 2010 during the modern season. Big D I'm not sure what your asking sorry.
-
I think Big D was asking if you got them on the Rez up out if Goldendale
-
So those are 2010 bulls and this was a good year to? Dang lets see this years bulls.
He is asking if you were hunting yakima rez or wpt timber ground.

This makes it sound like you got these elk this year. Just trying to help the OP out so he has an idea where to go... You are a very successful hunter to take those nice elk in this area, congrats to you. I had many nice animals on cam but my area got shut down this early archery season due to fire restriction, it sucked. Will you be hunting rifle here again this year?
-
Sounds about right, we had that group on our cams until about then, last couple years just the 1 & this year none...I've heard they move around with the loggers & usually stay up high til the snow pushes them down...
-
Thanks big d it cost me a lot of boot leather but it was worth it.
