There really isn't much of a story. My son and I started out at first light hunting up an old overgrown road, as we were going up I kept looking back into a bench that is hidden except for a short distance on the old road. As I turned around to look into the bench/bowl I couldn't believe my eyes. He was over 500 yards away, so we went down the road, and up an old cow trail up onto the side of the bench, thankfully we found the cow trail because it was wide enough to walk on without making much noise. Came around the corner checking carefully every few steps, and there he was, still standing right where he was when we spotted him. About a 100 yard shot from the tikka, and it was lights out for this dude! Glad my son was there to see it, and thankful for a great buck. Then the work started...

Thank you all for the nice words. Just dropped him off at the taxidermist. I am very humbled by this buck. I have been deer hunting for over 20 years and never shot anything but small blacktail and barely legal mule deer. Meat was always the #1 priority. I am not going to post the score the taxidermist gave me, or any measurements for two reasons: 1, I am very humbled, and 2, I don't want it to become a pissing contest. I was in the right place at the right time, and I am very thankful for the opportunity, and that I was able to share the hunt with my son. He has been hunting with me since he was 3, but this is the first year he could really hike and get far off the roads. Opening day we had a nice 3 point shot out from under us as I was laying down to take a shot on a skylined 3 point. I never saw the other hunter, and he never saw me and my boy. My son still thought it was pretty neat, and we went and talked to the gentleman that shot it, and offered our help. He declined due to having some help on the way, so we hunted the rest of the day and saw lots of does. The next morning he was tired so we didn't leave before light, I let him sleep and formulated a plan to go up the old road where I shot this guy. It was getting light, and I have always seen deer where he was at, but never any bucks, so it was a huge surprise to see him standing in there. Definitely the biggest buck I have ever shot, and probably will ever shoot. Thanks for reading. Now its time to cut him up and get him in the freezer!

I bet that's a "no story" your son will remember. Best buck I have seen so far this year. Congratulations on your trophy, and that deer would be a trophy for just about any permit holder. I'll take luck over skill any day, but we do make our own luck. I am happy for you guys.

That is a stud buck for sure. That is one of those bucks that you probably will never beat. Congrats and Happy to hear your kid got to share the experience

Well, I have never met you, bu I know the "story" of the "no story buck"...
You've been deer hunting for 20 years. Your first priority is to feed your family. You took your young son on a hunt so you can pass along your passion to him. You parked your truck and began to walk, because that's how hunting is done, not from the window of a car. You knew where to look, because after 20 years, that kind of thing becomes second nature. You spotted a deer, and instead of blasting away at him out of range, you calmly worked your way into position to make a shot that you were comfortable with. You killed him quickly and cleanly, took care of the meat and the trophy, and honored the animal by showing him to all of us on this site.
That's the story. That's what your son will remember.
Nicely done. Well deserved.

Thanks for putting it in perspective. That's pretty much how it happened, and hopefully how my son will remember it too!

Agreed! Well deserved and good for you! I have some crystal clear memories of moments on hunts with my dad and we never once killed a deer! Your son will not forget. Post up the mount when you get him back if you can remember, its a beautiful buck.

Nice buck Travis, I won't tell the score, but most people need QUALITY TAGS. For a buck that scores what this one did! :tung:

The second pic almost looks like an optical illusion, where the deer's head is bigger than his body lol. Great buck, congrats!

Congrats good looking buck.

That was very nicely said pathfinder. very very nice. If only more people could fully grasp what you just put into words, the bush would be alot better place
-
Nice buck! I love his black eye brows. For some reason he reminds me of groucho Marks.
Double awesome you got him with your young son. I remember the first time I saw my dad shoot a deer. It was a spike, but still made a big impression on me. We were still hunting in and alder patch and he jumped up about 30 yards from us and stared us down til dad decided he was a buck and pulled the trigger of his old model 94 25-35. I was so excited I ran up to the deer who had thrown his head back into the leaves. I hollered at dad "It's a doe!" He about had a heart attack until he came over and turned its head revealing the spikes.

Great buck,congrats
