Title: 6.5/06 or 6mm/06
Post by: Sagedawg on October 31, 2008, 08:29:03 AM: I have a long action 06, that isnt doing anything, thinking about working it over a bit just for a fun gun. Out of the 2 calibers listed, which would you pick and why. I know they are totally different ballistics wise, just want to see what others think about them.

That would be pretty sweet. That .260, while not a mag, is a helluva nice cartridge.

Yeah.......not really. That cartridge is sort of a joke (IMO); I'd rather have a roberts. A 257WSM would be ballistically similar to a 257 weatherby.

I agree, the .260 sounds like a sweet cartridge.

And about the subject: go with the 6.5/06

I agree.... kinda gimmicky. As soon as ya say that though, someone's gonna come out of the woodwork and jump down your throat claiming it's the best damn game killin SOBin caliber ever invented :chuckle:

Post by: 270Shooter on October 31, 2008, 02:37:59 PM: I have to agree a 6.5 WSM is a good idea. I don't know why they won't make one after all they made the .325 WSM which I think is a great round but it won't last long. Becuase of the small selection of .323 inches bullets :dunno:

This is more about "you can" than that "it makes sense" or that "you should"

I have never tried light bullutes in my 6.5, but I have launched all the long bullets and it loves em. 270 is a bit flatter.....6.5 is the cats meow for long range, know how far it is and have time to make adjustments gun.

If you're interested in 140s or heavier, you might want to look at a twist of 1:8.

Im going to order the barrel at the end of the week from Pac-Nor. Barrle will finish out at 26'' med hev contour with a 1:8 twist. Thanks for everyones input.

Well my wife has informed me that I can't afford a full blown custom :bash: :bash:, so I am having Pac-Nor fit the barrel and square and true the action. A few of the guys at the range have had them do some work with very good results, so Im going to give them a try. How does that 8.5 twist like the 140-142's? For starters Im ordering 100rds of loaded ammo to collect brass, and do barrle breakin, then Ill start working up some loads.Might need to ask you a few questions in the near future if you dont mind.

mine is a 700 trued & squared wearing a broughton 5c 8.5 @ 27" .293 nk. bushed pin, gre-tan lug, williams bottom, seeking rings/20moa base (bedded to action) mark 4 w/m1's sitting in a mc swirly remington hunter. bought' #10 all up. built by gre-tan rifles.

pretty much if you have a rangefinder and a rest.....it's dead.

Jeff, I already have a 25/06, which I really like, but for the type of shooting I like to do, it starts to loose steam about the time things begin to get fun.

Measure your desired bullets and run it through the Greenhill formula. I stayed with 1:8 on my 26" .264" Pac-Nor because I wanted the option of going up to the 156-160 gr bullets. I'm a believer that too much twist is better than too little.......

I just bought a BAT action from Russ Haydon and am building a 6-284 with a 12 twist. Gonna wear a mcmillan stock, jewell trigger, bat 20 MOA rings, Hart remington varmint contour barrel (26") and a leupold custom shop 8.5-25 with M1 turrets. I am going to run 87 V-max as hard as I can! JJ

Have you ever tried one of Leupold custom turrets matched to your drop chart?
