I thought the deer I shot last year was the biggest Blackie that I'd ever get, now this! :yike: Aaaaaaahhhhhhhh what do I do? I just paid last years Taxi bill and put a deposit on my bear, now comes another decision. I had never had anything mounted or tanned until 3 years ago when I had a bison hide tanned. Then last years deer , this years bear and now I have an even bigger Blackie! What I will probably use as justification is last years Blackie had Whitetail like antlers. This one is has Mule deer like antlers. I truly feel blessed at the moment, and I'm not even religious! :chuckle: I do feel as though the good mother earth is telling me that I'm doing something right. I like being good to the land and I appreciate everything she gives me. Let me get showered and rested up, then I will give a full story and more pics. Thanks for all the nice comments so far.

Thanks again everyone, it was a great hunt and I am very happy with this fine buck. It was one of the best days in the woods I've ever experienced. Heartsblood, Glen was with me and my goal was to help him get his first deer. The day dawned to plenty of fog so I had to change strategies a little bit. I usually like to watch a big clear ravine at first light but not with the fog. Instead we headed straight into the thickets. The first 100 yards is an alder thicket, luckily there is a somewhat worn trail or it would be very nasty to get through. The next 100 yards transitions into thick firs and giant ferns. At around 200ish yards it kind of opens into a more open ridge top with giant firs and ceders with more giant ferns. There are area's with 50-60 yard views but most of the time it's 10- 25 yards.
I put Glen on a stand then I tossed out a bucket of apples. We waited for 30 minutes then I gave a few fawn in distress bleats. Last years buck came in after about 2 minutes of me doing this. It's one of Rick Robbins calls, awesome calls! Today nothing came in so I threw in some doe bleats then eventually a few buck grunts. I forgot my rattle bag which I was bummed about. Not much was happening so after calling I waited about 30 minutes then took a little hike to the end of the ridge. It was about 100 yards away from Glen. I heard something moving down in the ravine so I decided to do some more calling. About 5 minutes later I hear Glen shoot and all kinds of racket and I see a deer go blazing down the ravine.
I head back and meet up with Glen who tells me that a Doe, awn and a fork horned buck came walking out so he took a shot at the buck. We searched the area and found a little hair but no blood. We found his path to another ravine and couldn't find any blood at all. I figured it was a glancing blow that just knocked off a little hair but we wanted to be sure so the search continued. All of a sudden we heard crunching in the brush up higher on the ridge top so we took a stand and started glassing. It's really thick in this area so visibility was limited. The crunching stopped so I started using the fawn bleat again. Crunch crunch crunch, bleats, crunch crunch crunch. Then we started hearing something down where Glens buck ran off too. all of a sudden I see a little fork horn with a deformed left antler moving through the brush and it heads off down the ridge top out of sight. I explained the deer to Glen and he confirms that was the deer he shot at. We found it very odd that you could shoot and graze a deer, it runs off then comes right back within 15-20 yards from where it happened!
We hear more crunching up the ridge so I continue to softly use the fawn bleat. I assume the little buck went the other way knowing what was up on the ridge top. The sound moved down just inside the opposite ravine from us then out pops a big antler. I whisper big buck and Glen kneeled down to my left. I lifted and cock my Thompson 12 Gage and pointed it at the antler. The deer took a few more steps and I could see his head and shoulders. I whisper to Glen, Plug your ears. The deer took a couple more steps towards us and I had a quartering towards me shot. I put the cross hairs on the base of his neck so the bullet will pass into the vitals. I squeeze the trigger and he dropped in his tracks. BBD!!! He barely moved at all and expired in moments. What an exciting day, it had a total roller coaster of emotions. We were excited about getting this buck and relieved that the other was not mortally hit and lived another day. This was another old deer like last years, he had 4 bottom front teeth and no others. I have to leave now but will post more pics later.

Very cool Ripper! Congrats. Hopefully there is still taxidermy money left in the bank. :chuckle:
-
WOW! Nice!

Thanks for the write up what a great buck! It sounds like you are getting those big BTs figured out. I'm not sure that there us a harder critter to figure out on a regular basis. Lord knows I'm having a hard time with it :bash:
-
The pics didn't turn out the best, my cell camera sux. This is the best of the rest.
-
Once again, that is a great buck. Thanks for adding more pics.

Nice deer! Wish I could save some of his genetic material to transfer to our does out here, hmmm, might be an interesting science project for my son.... :chuckle:
-
Nic buck congrats
-
Awesome!!!
-
Like the write up and congrats on the nice buck.

Thanks for the write up Ripper! And thanks for taking me along. I have now been initiated into the club of deer hunters who have missed a shot at their animals and are now replaying over and over what they (I) could have done different! :chuckle:
So relieved to have not crippled an animal....
It was bitter sweet for me. While I would have loved to have taken my first deer, the second buck who walked up on us was a nicer buck and, it gives little forkie a chance to mature and thrive to become a fine buck himself. All in all it was more a sweet experience than a bitter one.
It is such a privilege to experience a day where you are close to game and have opportunities. It is such a blessing to be with friends and have successful hunts. And the whole process is also a gift - from dressing the animal, to the drag, to skinning - the work.
Thanks for a great day. :)

Nice deer. Love those chocolate colored antlers. They are cool.

Great buck Mark - nice work!

Your more likely to get wolves transplanted than deer Loki, but than again it wood make for a great middle schooler science project that the state might fund. Wonder how long 3-5 bucks, and does would take to change the genetics of your Island?

Nice buck congrats

I just dropped my head and cape off at the taxidermist. He looked the deer over and pointed out all the bumps, scars and torn ears on him. Both of his eyes had scars or fresh damage around them. He said he had never seen a deer with so many battle scars in all his life. Apparently I shot the neighborhood bad ass. He was either the baddest deer on the mountain or he thought he was a bad ass and continually got his ass kicked. Either way he was not afraid to fight. He was also very old, not much left for teeth. RIP my good friend, it was an honor to match wits with you.
-
Lookie what I found. Devastating I tell ya. This is a 12 g 385 g Nosler hollow point. It hit the deer in the neck left of center, absolutely shattered 4 vertebrate then exited and lodged under the right shoulder blade.
-
That is an awesome buck ripper! Congrats!
