Here is a strange question and I almost feel stupid for asking it but while out yesterday I spooked a HUGE chocolate colored bear off a gut pile (whole carcass) and am wondering if this bear might return to the carcass especially this late in the season when they are trying to lay in the reserves?
I realise the the taste of the meat might be influenced by what it has been eating but the size of this bear would probably make book and the color phase is what I am after already have my 350 pound solid black.

He should come back free meal ticket.
-
Thanks for the quick reply and that is kinda what I was hoping to hear guess who will be sitting on a carcass every chance he gets next week also thank you to the hunter that didn't find his 3x3 last week especially if this brute shows back up

I have 5 days worth of video from a dead cow moose with the same bear on it each day. Seems they don't like it once the maggots get going, but fresh and afterwards when nothing but skin and bones, they love it!
What is the WDFW rule on baiting a bear with natural bait? anyone know?
-
He'll be back.

Since he didn't place the bait there he's good. If he had dumped a bucket of guts 50' from his treestand, it'd be a different story I believe.
-
I believe that's the interpretation. :yeah:
-
Looks like a shooter.
Is that "mass" the gut pile?

:bfg:

WOW that's a nice bear! Good luck getting him.

Interesting looking "gut" pile, more so when you blow up the pic...but hey who am i to say....

well went and spent all morning out at the gut pile / carcass and wow something got ahold of it and moved it approximately 250 feet up and around the a hill, tucked it in under a log and some brush. I mean the amount of carcass that was left the other day was both hind and front quarters and the entire chest cavity and neck today all that was left was just the Front quarters and neck although the hind quarters were at the new location.
I am wondering if a cougar would of possibly done this or is this common for a bruiser of a bruin to do it also? At any rate going back out friday and spend from before daylight to after dark
My bear I shot a few years ago was dragging a whole deer carcass up an old skidder road. So, I guess a cat could do that too.
That's a fatty in that picture Jingles. Hope you get him or the cat or.............

the WDFW law is that if you happen to shoot one over an "unknown" gut pile then its ok. if you are "aware" then its still considered baiting, I asked this exact question last year to wdfw via email and posted the entire email for all to see, it was very clear that any "known" gut pile or anything that is a food source for bears that is not natural is bait.
the only thing natural is growing plants or live fish. or water. period.

You'll often get varying answers between officials. Some even in direct conflict with RCW, you've got to be careful if you're going to ask an individual in Olympia.

If you're baiting deer and a bear keeps coming back to the deer bait, you're not baiting the bear and it's perfectly OK to shoot the bear. This was told to me by a friend that had that scenario. The local Game Warden told him that. So, who knows what's right.

That's sure not what I was told.

this is super variable so much of it has been left to the interpretation of the officer involved, I think the very best thing to do is ask the actual officers/wardens you might have to deal with in the aftermath if they say good to go.... bang fat bear dead, if they say no :dunno: then its your call and your willingness to potentially have to explain to a judge.

There is no doubt in my mind...if you are hunting deer over bait, a bear comes in, you shoot it and tag it, you will (if caught) get cited and lose your butt.

Let's see the pics :dunno:

All the pics were removed.

Why
-
Ask the OP.
-
Okay I'm asking where are the pics? :dunno:

Okay I'm asking where are the pics? :dunno:
what pics?

Thread says pics added but I see no pics

They along with some posts have been removed from this thread.
The pics of the "gutpile" in what appears to be a depression and partially covered with branches, with bears near and on it looked very much like a pile of apples or something other than a "gutpile" or dead animal.
-
Oh snap someone took it to the next level with the apples and it became baiting :bdid:

That doesn't pass the smell test. I wish it were true, but I wouldn't risk shooting a bear over a pile of deer bait. Just because you say you are baiting deer, doesn't mean that the bait doesn't become bear bait as soon as a bear decides he likes the deer bait.
I suppose if bears could read, you could post a sign saying "deer bait; no bears allowed"....... :)
-
It was clearly a pile of apples that was covered with branches to try and hide it.

I was a little surprised that a mod did not freeze this thread to changes? Maybe they have what was posted saved.
I remember a few years ago a dead bear post with feed store salt bags in the background of the pic, that thread blew up quick and got locked. Seems like times have changed.
