So dad and I are preparing for his late permit. We were just discussing what to expect for how big these Muley bucks will be. I did a search but couldn't find any pics.
Can anyone share pics or what to expect? We have already started scouting the area and know that the snow will be a factor on where and how many deer there are.
-
You won't have any trouble finding targets as long as we get snow before mid-November. I just came out of GMU 244 (Glacier Peak Wilderness) upper Entiat and all of the bucks are still at the snow level above 6500 feet. They will come down in November chasing does if not running from snow but snow really helps.
You could hold out for a big one and eat tag soup or take any decent 140+ buck; obviously depending on how much time you have.
-
A 4 1/2 year old deer usually is the point where they can become shooters. There ears when looking at you are usually 22-23 inches.Big ol bucks will go 24". Usually a buck out 2-3" past his ears will be 26-28" look for deep forks and you got a trophy in the 175-185" range. But remember a older buck barely passed his ears can be 26" do your research and be prepared. Good luck.

I got that all down, we just weren't sure what the quality would be in that area at that time of year. I'm gathering that it is going to depend on the weather and if the deer have moved on to the wintering areas.
Thanks for the info though
-
i'd be near the south east boundry
-
Even if the snow is not all the way down the does come down anyway and of course the bucks follow. You will see bucks low guaranteed
-
Sounds like everyone says the same thing even the biologist. Down lower is the ticket.
Now about camping that time of year? I have a call into the ranger to see if we can camp even though the park is closed.
Any other suggestions? Maybe someone close by that would let us park camper and plug in?
-
Any one got any Slide Ridge bucks this year? Countdown to our late hunt is on!! Can't wait.

This guy was taken outta there last year during modern

Can't complain about that!

Great buck

Good Luck this year.....I saw a huge buck taken out of there last year with archery gear. The genetics are there.... I actually think the pic and story was posted on here last year, it was a young hunter with a true monster.
Can't wait to here your story and see the pics...Stick'em deep. :archery_smiley:

Dalton's last year. Not real big frame but great character
Yup that is the buck.....that pick does not due that buck justice. that was a stud of a buck with tons of mass and actually was pretty wide. I was very luck to have seen that buck in person here in town. Also the body on that buck was an absolute hog. Congrats to Dalton.
-
Those are some nice bucks. not sure what kind of snow we are going to have. It looks like clear and cold for next 10 days. Dad went over last weekend and the snow was pretty high still.
-
Oh boy, it's gonna get cold. :yike: No snow, I hope that doesn't mess us up. The deer will prob be more spread out I assume. Decided to stay in town at hotel rather than drag camper up and chance freezing up.

Nice bucks can be found, but the true monsters show up in better numbers once the snow starts piling up. Good luck up there .

The passes are forecasting snow down to 1500ft by Sunday, so maybe it will be piling up at higher elevations and push some big ones down for us.
-
Hope your seeing SOME
-
Fingers are crossed!
-
Gonna be a tough hunt. Scouted today and there is no snow down below about 5000ft. Able to drive to the top no problem.
All we saw were does today. Permit opens tomorrow, I'll try to update. Going to cover some ground and do a lot of spotting.
-
Well keep me updated buddy
-
I was in nearby Entiat filling my archery doe tag on Friday. No snow! Bucks not even chasing does anymore. Saw plenty of large bucks. But, only one big guy had a lone doe w/him. The rest of the big bucks were off on their own. I even saw a couple big boys that were bedded together and put a couple buck tag holders on them Friday morning. Filled my doe tag Friday afternoon.
Good luck!

Love that area. Still crossing my fingers that some day I will have the late tag in hand.
-
Rifle hunters kill a lot of bucks in that area before the bow tag opens.

Dalton's last year. Not real big frame but great character
Interesting seeing Dalton's buck posted...
He's pretty tight lipped about that buck..
-
Not bad so far. We've seen 29 bucks, from spikes on up. 6 of them have been nice deer, 3 shooters but no shots. Got snow up above 3800 ft last night so that helped but the deer are spread out all over the place from the bottom to 6000 ft we have seen does, fawns, & bucks.
gonna get colder tomorrow for the rest of the week so maybe they will get moving better.

I know he will chat all day long about whitetail but when you start talking mule deer with him he's like a vault :chuckle:

Any update?

Pretty good hunt so far considering the conditions. Got cold as I'm sure everyone knows and really crunchy. Basically we can't even get out of the rig and put on any type of stalk. The good news is as of noon today when I had to leave we had seen 70 bucks. A few were duplicates and prob 15 nice bucks and 10 big ones that we consider shooters. Tried for a 6x7 about 23-24 inch but heavy today, but too crunchy and only got within 85yds. Dad is still up there, so I'll update as soon as I hear and post more with some videos when I get a chance.
-
I left at noon today and Dad got a nice 5pt at 1. Figures right after I leave. I'll get story and pics up tomorrow. I can't figure out how to post a pic from my ipad. He's not a monster but a nice tall and wide buck.
-
Awesome. Those late tags are a blast.
-
cool
-
heres a pic my dad sent me. not the best quality but ill have better ones when he gets home.
Story:
He decided to walk into a draw after we parted ways yesterday about noon. Took his time crunching up the coulee and spotted a nice 4pt in the brush above him. The buck wasn't spooked and paid no attention to him. He was able to sneak into 40 yds and the buck moved off out of range. He was held up in a stand of small pines when he heard some crunching and thrashing below him. There was a larger buck tearing up trees as he made his way up out of the bottom. Ended up running past Dad at about 50 yds but moving too quick for a shot. The bigger buck got to the smaller one and started tearing up more trees then picked a fight and they sparred for a fewminutes! They were wheezing at each other and everything! Damn i wish I would of been there. I had been filming everything all week and that would have been cool. We noticed the day prior the bucks started chasing does and i have video of a couple smaller bucks going at it. There was definitely some secondary rut going on. Anyway, the bigger buck got done chasing off the smaller one and headed directly to my dad. He got to 15 yards behind some trees and dad drew on him, the buck held up and made dad hold his bow for what he said was at least a minute. The buck stepped out and he double lunged him. Didn't go far, made a circle and dropped. This pic is how he found him. He quartered him and caped him out and packed out the majority then headed back in this morning for the rest.
What a hunt! I had a blast even though I missed the final chapter, i still got to have a good 4 days of hunting with my dad and the memories will last a lifetime. Can't wait till I draw the tag now!
Anyone recommend a taxidermist close to lake stevens area? I think we'll get him mounted.

What a pretty buck :)

That's a great archery buck!! Congrats for you and your dad.

10 point taxidermy in marysville , price is
Reasonable, and he does good work .
-
Paul at 10 point did a great job on my whitetail last year.
-
Very nice buck ..congrats to your pop ... sure is a white faced buck
-
In that cold weather with loud crunchy snow you have to minimize the walking and dry to duplicate the sound a deer would make when they walk, slow and easy. Spend as much time standing as you can, keep out of the hard wind and in the sun, place where deer would be in those conditions. Hard to hunt but possible. Nice buck.
-
Rods taxidermy in arlimgton is on point. Just IMO. He does some of the best work around. By far some of the best quality I have seen.
-
Good Pics.
-
That's a great buck! Congrats to you both! Every step you both took led to that buck. Great archery deer

one more

I would take him to Fidalgo Taxidermy in Annacortes. A little ways from Lake Stevens but definitely worth it.

Congrats!! That is a fun hunt but certainly not an easy one.. You guys did well! Very cool you got the family time in there.

Sweet looking buck right there. Your Dad is a savage..congrats to him! Did you guys pick a Taxi yet? His snow camo is pretty sick looking..what is it do you know?

Haven't picked a taxi yet. Gonna start calling around to a few.
We both run the same camo, Scentlok Carbon Alloy. It works awesome in the late season.

Got my dads Muley back from Moro taxidermy. Looks great!!
Can't wait for this hunt in Dec.

The Duncan fire will change things a little. All of the Entiat side from Shady Pass to the Wilderness boundary has burned (is burning) and access to the Entiat North Fork and maybe even the Shady Pass road may still be closed on the Entiat side in November. The Chelan side of shady Pass should be open and if the Shady Pass (Entiat side) is open the fire only burned the up valley side and there will be deer moving through the burn; they may not let you in there. Don't worry, it will be a good hunt and much of the unit will be open.
-
Pretty Buck. That area needed to burn. The beetles need to burn and snowmobiling areas just got the much needed cleaning. Has anybody been to Cottonwood Campground in the last couple of years. What a mess in there.

We go in the 25 mile creek from Chelan side. There was a small fire up there earlier this year, but I think most of it dodged the fire. I'll have to get up there in Oct and check it out.
-
The Duncan fire didn't even but a dent in the bettle kill up there
-
I'm gonna get this one fired up again and use the same thread for my hunt. I'm starting to get pretty excited to get back up there and can't wait to see what this years holds for us. I feel very fortunate to have drawn the tag the year after my dad. He will be up there with me this year and it is now my turn to chase the big boys.
What does everyone think about using decoys on mule deer? I'm contemplating getting a heads up decoy but not sure on doe or buck because last year we got some secondary rut and i figured it might help to have a decoy to draw them in closer. I hesitate to get the bow mount for the heads up decoy during the general season cause of the risk of another hunter coming in on ya but for this hunt there are only 2 other tags and last year we never even saw the other 2 guys.
-
Amazing antler growth this year. I figured we were in drought conditions which usually means less growth. Apparantly there was quite a bit of lush food that held water. I am seeing bigger bucks being popped than average. Not necessarily in Slide Ridge, but including that country for sure.

Getting ramped up  Bow is shooting awesome and I'm ready to hit the hills. Going up this weekend to check it out. Looks like some weather coming next week so we might still end up with some snow up there.

It's seem like the deer that winter in the area are the only ones around come that time. However there are still some nice ones in there. Wonder if the big 2 will make it back.
Big 2? Do tell me more

Every time this post pops up...I look in anticipation of seeing a nice buck. Can't wait for the story.
-
It was a tough day for day 3. Deer moved up high and were hunkered in most of the day. Day 2 was good with one shooter but couldn't get on him. Day 1 was the best so far for quality of bucks and numbers. Looks like weather moving in tomorrow afternoon. Crossing my fingers for some snow and hopefully the conditions aren't so dang crunchy.
Not near the snow that I expected. Basically we are identical to last year.

While I'm not challenging the fact that this was or wasn't on private property, I have heard the term/figure of speech Griz231 used before regarding a last day shooter. In other words he'd shoot that buck on the last day as he's driving off the mountain.....but he wouldn't shoot him on the 1st day.
Not specifically meaning he would shoot that specific buck in that specific spot regardless of who's property it was on.

True. Yes it's on private but we have permission.

Day 4 was better. Still crunchy and tough hunting but saw more bucks. No shooters though. Hoping there's fresh snow up there this morning.

Day 5.........uh oh! The big boys are either not here or pushed through. No new snow in fact it's melting off at 3000ft. Hunted high and low and spotted several miniature bucks. One tiny 4pt and a ton of does. Those nicer bucks have got to be there but with everything spread out and weather warming up the odds don't seem to be in our favor. It's still huntin and still fun but sure would like some good quality animals around. Day 6 on the way!!

Griz The People living there are Awesome people and yes all you would have to do is ask hope you knock a big one down

Where is the Day 6 report?!
The anticipation is unbearable....
Hey you, get back to work!
-
Alrighty. I started the write up last night on my phone and was just about done and it locked up and lost everything. So let's try again on the PC this time.
Day 6, got a 1/2 inch of snow which helped, but it was really foggy. It ended up helping me sneak in closer which was nice. The only downfall, Range finders don't work in the fog :bash: It warmed up quick in the morning and everything was starting to melt. I got into a nice bunch of deer that had several bucks. One nice 4 pt and another bigger 4pt. I got to 60 yds of the bigger one but only a rear end shot. They walked off into the fog so I circled and got the wind again. Caught up to them and found the smaller 4 pt and anther buck bedded at 40 yds. They spotted me first and started walking away. The 4 pt gave me a quick opportunity so had to kneel down under a branch and attempt a 45 yd shot. Not 45 yds :bash: I either misjudged distance or leaned back on the release and shot just over him literally giving him a buzz cut. The arrow hit some sage and busted in half. There was hair all over the snow. I tracked him for quite a while and no blood. Definitely shot over him. Took after another bunch a little later in the morning and just couldn't find any good bucks.
Day 7, This was my last day as I needed to get home to the family. It got cold after everything was melting off which made it extremely crunchy again. Once again we had fog to deal with so spotting was out of the question. Did a morning hike and spotted a couple nice bucks 200 yds out but they were already spooked due to the noise. Dad radioed me and said he saw a nice tall 4pt side hilling below me. I took off down the hill just ahead of where he last saw him. I came up to a clearing and was about to pull up the binos to look at some deer about 100 yds out and I stepped on a clump of grass that was icy and ate sh$t. Spooked all the deer including the nice 4pt. :bash:
Day 7 1/3, 11:30 rolled around and I decided I had better call it and head out. It was a lot of fun and hunting is just that; HUNTING. It's not killing.
The weather really played a big role. Going from 7 degrees to 40 degrees in 5 days did not help at all. We had high hopes for the year after the first day and were a bit bummed we didn't get the quality animals.
Oh wait I forgot the part of when we were heading off the hill, we got to the last couple switch backs and I spotted a 3 pt out in the burn with a ton of other deer, mostly does. I figured, what the heck, I'll go for some meat. Tastes better than tag soup. I ended up with a 40 yard shot and I drilled him!! Not the big one we wanted but it is my first Muley buck with a bow, so I'm good with it.
Not sure how the other two tags ended up.
Let's hope my brother draws next year and I get to do it again!
-
Right on! Sounds like you made the most of a great opportunity and had a blast doing it. Hunting is hunting and you ended up harvesting a nice buck and put meat in the freezer. Glad you had a good time and had the right attitude all along.
-
How old do you all think this buck is?
-
Looks like an awesome double throat patch.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
-
Not very..................

Wow he has awesome coloring and a great double throat patch  Great buck congrats!
-
Nice buck! Congratz! Pretty coloring on that one

Looks like he could of been 3 on each side. He's broke off.

sounds like you had a great hunt. thanks for sharing
