As soon as I get off work on 1 Nov I am heading to Missouri for 21 days. Going to take the cataraft and drive 14.5 hours. Going to launch on the Eleven Point River in southern MO. Going to float about 9 miles and then camp at a float camp, only accessible from the river and has fire ring and latrine (bonus)! :) I'll be solo hunting for 2 weeks with a bow and 1 week with a rifle. I can take 4 deer, or if I want as many does as I buy $7 tags for, and 2 turkeys. Once I get done hunting or have to take deer to a locker (in case of warm weather) I'll have about a 6 mile float to the take out. I'll be hunting a 16,227 acres wilderness area called the Irish Wilderness. Probably won't see many, if any, folks. Most folks don't float the river in Nov and it's a 12 mile hike in from the nearest road. Anyone know or recommend a good solar powered phone charger? How about a good windup NOAA radio? Thanks!!
-
Sorry, no recommendations for you, but sounds like one heck of a trip. FUN
-
Another option would be to get a few extra batteries for the phone. :dunno:
-
That sounds awesome.
The Brunton unit works well for a solar charger and there is also a battery pack that is for recharging phones that works great. I have had trouble with the Goal Zero.
Excited to see how it goes for ya! Good luck.
-
Sounds fun. Good luck and be safe.

This sounds like an incredible trip. Tagging this – I’m sure you’ll be updating.

I grew up in Missouri, so I love hunting November whitetails, in the pre-rut and rut, in the hardwoods. I also like going back to MO because I can buy my deer tags at resident prices, so I can hunt a boatload of deer and turkeys for $60. I can fish and hunt small game with just my VA letter. No license needed. The area, I have always wanted to hunt MO's so called wilderness areas and this one has the perfect river for a float. It's a Blue Ribbon river so all 138 miles has NO development along it's banks and never will.
-
Want company?? :chuckle:
-
Anytime, if this is as fun and as good as I think it will be, this will be an annual trip for me.
-
Sounds like a great trip!! Would love to do something like that good luck and knock them dead. Second the Bruton

:yeah: I tried three different Goal Zero units through Costco before my NWT trip. Returned each one. I know a few guys with the Brunton, have not gotten one myself, and they all like them.
I used to float the Siletz in Oregon to hunt blacktail and elk in the Bulls Bag. Those were some very memorable hunts.
-
Wow Fred
I am from the Northern part of the state and had not heard of that river.
What a great time of year to be down in the southern part.
Good luck
-
Thanks, can't wait to get there.
-
Man that sounds like a blast! Be safe Fred and take lots of pictures for us!
-
I want to see how you stack the deer up on the cataraft. Make sure you get pics.
-
Very exciting trip...
-
That sounds awesome. Can't wait for the trip report on that one.
Take lots of pictures and be safe, Fred.
I've also heard good things about the Brunton setup.

Sounds like one hell of a trip.
I use a solar charger for some electronics out in the field when I'm going for days without power. The one I have is:
http://www.rei.com/product/851177/goal-zero-switch-8-solar-recharging-kit (http://www.rei.com/product/851177/goal-zero-switch-8-solar-recharging-kit)
It's pretty good for recharging GoPro's and even bumping a charge on a cell but not so good for larger electronics like Laptops. Something like this works a slow trickle charge into your electronics and I've found is best to leave sitting on a pack or sun exposed location for a few hours at a time to really see the benefits. I tend to pack the charger with me if I'm on an extended day hike since the weight is negligible. I would say the 4 star rating on REI is about right... not great - but pretty good with a few flaws.
Good luck on your hunt.
-
Thanks everyone, I will do a good trip report with photos. :)
Thanks for the advice on the solar chargers eveyone!!
P.S. I was wrong on the prices of the tags, I got 4 deer and 2 turkey tags for $41. :)
-
Tagging to follow....sounds like a great trip.
-
enjoy & good luck ! will be waiting for updates.
-
Sounds fun! Check out some of those disposable battery chargers. They work well and would be cheaper for that duration of a trip.
-
good luck to you...
-
I have one of those Bio Lite stoves that charges phones. Welcome to use it if you want to pay the shipping to and from. It is a neat little thing and works ok once you get a hot fire. let me know.

Very nice offer, thank you. I'm going to go ahead and buy a Brunton.

Check out the 2600mAh Portable USB External Mobile Battery Charger Power Bank. They can be bought for less than $10 each. I used them in Alaska this fall. Each power bank gives you about 2.5 charges on my iPhone. Cheap and they work well.
Much cheaper than a solar charger.
-
I'll do that, thanks!!

Bought two today, thanks for the tip!!

Good Luck Fred!!!! Departure time is getting close! Don't forget the camera and fish pole. A mini tripod for self-portraits makes things nice while solo, too. Gorilla Pod for Wal-Mart is a great little one.
Good luck buddy!
-
Thanks Todd!! I go to sleep dreaming about this trip and wake up thinking about it, can't wait!!!
-
Fred......Good luck on your trip, it's almost time
Safe Travels

:) :) :) Thanks! Heading out tomorrow!!!!!!!!

Good Luck!!!

Any updates yet?

I second the Biolite stove. Works great and isn't dependent on the weather.

Back home. Rough week, no deer, lost camera and dragging a loaded raft over several shoals was not much fun. Did catch several nice rainbow trout and had a good "camping" trip. Loaded raft was way too big for this river, which resembled a creek in several locations. I'll have to figure out a different location for this type of trip. Only saw two does all week, no turkeys or turkey sign. Pretty disappointing trip.
-
Oh Bummer
Bet it was beautiful down there this time of year though.
Sorry about the dissapointment
-
Bummer! Doesn't sound like it was boring though. And I expect you at least know you've done what few others have done. When you look back later I bet it's an adventure you won't regret. I've had a few like that where once I get over my disappointment of failed expectations I realize it was actually quite memorable.
-
I bet it beats a day of work.. you will find your spot soon
-

Imagine what that would have been like with 5 deer and a couple of turkey added to the "load". :chuckle:

:chuckle:
I was hoping this was going to turn into an annual hunt, but the river is just not going to be big enough. VERY beautiful area. I was hoping for better deer activity/density, but that's the way it goes. I had some GREAT photos, particularly one of the raft fully loaded, but while dragging my raft through one of the shoals it slipped out and gone. :( I'm really an idiot, I watched several YouTube videos on this river and read up on it and did not realize what "shoals" meant, I thought they were talking about rapids, but the shoals were places where the river widened and were only running a couple of inches deep. Some of them were 50 to 60 yards long. Here's a few photos from my phone, sorry about the quality.

-
Did you see many people along the way?
-
None
-
That right there would make the trip worth it to me! Must have been peaceful
-
Very quiet!
-
Too bad about no deer and the camera, but looks like a neat trip.
-
Seems to me like you are camera challenged while rafting :chuckle: isn't that 2 digital cameras into the drink recently?
Maybe it is the phone camera, but I was thinking there would be way more color in the trees down there this time of year.
If I remember right the deep forests of southern MO are not high density deer regions like the agricultural areas surrounding and up north???
Still all in all, no people for a solid week, on a river with a roofless potty.....Priceless ;)
-

Oaks just turn brown. ;)
-
Yes Cameras 0 Rivers 2! One cost about $1000, this one was about $60. :)
Actually the foliage was outstanding, lost of color!!!
Yep, much lower deer densities, but I did expect a little more activity, but the daytime temps were mid 60s sunny and breezy....but still found very few rubs and even fewer scrapes.
Agreed!!!!!!
-
Looks like a fun time anyway. Question, did you haul all that gear on your boat? fold up camp table etc.
-
Yes, my boat can haul 1050 pounds of gear.
-
Alot of rowing, or could you relax a bit with the current?
-
You don't happen to be related to Dan-o (from the Bigfoot thread) do you? He has the same problem with loosing cameras.
-
Nope, I didn't loose the first one, it was my wife. :)
I actually had to row quite a bit on the trip out due to wind. The cataraft catches a lot of wind and if it's a headwind it can be a real pain on a river with little current such as this one.
-
That's a really cool area. We used to float the Eleven Point during the summers when I lived there. Of course, our gear consisted of mass quantities of beer and the critters we were watching were of the female human variety.
Fred,
How do you get away without paying Non-Res. license fees?
-
Missouri allows non-residents, who are 60% or more service connected vets, to purchase tags at resident prices. If you carry your VA letter with you, you don't even need to buy a fishing license or a small game license. :)
-
I would rather be out there than stay home. Always another time.
;)
-
-
Sounds like it was an adventure and that's the important part.

:yeah:
Maybe this state could do that.............Or maybe a senior discount on tags!

Cool  Sounds like a great trip
