The 2013 season was action packed, and as always...A BLAST! Friday, we found ourselves at FF4607's Grandmothers house. A quick evening scouting trip, a good dinner, and a little football, we were all off to bed.
Mrs. FF4607 was the first to fill her tag. We spotted a few deer with what appeared to be two shooter bucks on a hillside and a plan was made to put a stalk on them to get Mrs. FF4607 into shooting position. The plan worked, putting the deer standing broad side and Mrs FF4607 dropped the buck with her first shot from the .243. A second shot anchored him for good, and Mrs. FF4607 had a tall 2x3 to hang her tag on!

Congrats!

Saturday was action packed, with many tags filled. For us, opportunities were abundant, looking over many bucks. The evening hunt ended watching a heavy horned 2x3 feed by himself. This buck was one that Mrs. C-Money really liked, and she would soon prove it....
Sunday, found us hunting in the same area, seeing deer from the start of daylight. FF4607 found the buck he was looking for, a LARGE 4x4, but it was not that big boys day to meet his maker as the stalk fell apart, and big buck bounced away. Later that evening, we spot that heavy horned 2x3 from the evening before, and Mrs. C-Money was happy to put a short stalk on him and go in for a good shot. Off she went, we watched with our Binos as she readied her 7mm-08 on her shooting sticks. POW! A solid hit! the 140 Partition did its job. One more in the neck and Mrs. C-Money had her hands on a dandy buck!

Mrs. C-Money and I drew second deer (doe) tags this year. Tuesday, we shifted gears and went with our kiddos to try and harvest our doe's. We glassed the sage brush near an alfalfa field, and spotted some doe's walking in our general direction. We made a quick move to a spot were we had a good shooting lane threw the old growth sage. My wife once again, rested or 7mm-08 on her shooting sticks, as we watched the deer walk down the gentle slope towards us. ErrrrAnnt! I made a semi goofy sounding, but serious attempt to grunt. It must have worked, cause the lead doe stopped in the lane....POW!! My wife had just filled her second tag. Smiles and high fives all around. We were all excited to be outdoors together, with fresh meat on the ground.

Off we went, back to the truck to get equipment to pack out my wife's doe. Before long, 5 muley does flushed out of the sage brush from literally under our feet! Well the old saying safety in numbers is true....4 stayed together and went to the right, one veered off to the left, by its self. A quick move to the top of a small rise placed me into good shooting position. The deer stopped broadside to look back....POW! The .270win put her to sleep very quickly. I filled my doe tag! We got our deer out to the truck, and we were homeward bound to get some skinning done.

Congrats c-money!

The next morning we were in the same area that we harvested our doe's the day before. At first light, we were glassing over the sage checking deer for antlers. We slowly made our way, about 200 yards into the sage off of an alfalfa field. After about an hour, I see antlers on the horizon, a long way off. No need to have binos to see these antlers.
We watch the buck, who is moving at a good pace, across the sage heading towards the rocky cuts and draws below us. My wife and I moved around and get below him, and I readied for a shot opportunity. He stopped broadside, but as he walked down while we were making our move, he drifted down and away from us. This made a long shot, longer, and I passed. We watched where he went, and we made a plan to go search for him in those rocky cuts and draws. I figured he was going to bed, and we prayed we could find him again.

Well, I will finish up this story...
We approached the area we last saw the buck, and we slowed up or pace significantly. My heart began to beat a little faster as we approached the edge of a small, rocky bowl. There he is! He was all tucked into bed on the far side of the bowl in the shade behind the sage brush. He is looking right at us. As I shoulder the .270, he jumps up and bolts straight up the side of the bowl. My cross hairs settle in between the shoulder blades of the rapidly escaping buck......POW! The buck instantly hit the ground, like his legs were just knocked out from under him. My biggest mule deer buck was down!
