Just curious if anyone knows of a breeder locally for American Water Spaniels??

I don't but there are only a very small handful in the US that are performance breedings. I think the just the second AWS of all time just hit 1000 points in the HRC.

If you have seen one that you thought was a good worker in the field, do your best to find out where the owner got that one from. I have seen a few at hunt tests and have yet to be impressed by one in terms of working ability.

I've never seen a very motivated AWS in person. I put them in the same category as flat coats and Irish Water Spaniels. You find ONE "maybe" TWO that do the work effectively.

Just like why most pointing dog owners stick to one of maybe five breeds in this country there is a reason people stick to labs, English cockers, springers, and chessies predominantly.

If size is the issue  and if the dog is going to be both a water dog and upland dog I would look for a line of performance labs in the 50lbs range.
