It was pretty lean today. I was hoping to glass over 20 bucks a day LOL. Didn't even really get to try out my new glass, withthe fog so thick. The good thing about today was if you could see a deer, it was already within bow range. The highlite of the day happened fairly quickly at 9 this morning. I spotted a does ears looking at me at about 20 yards. She continued passed me with two more does. I watched them without moving. THe fog was just starting to come in. I figured I should wait 10 minutes and see if there were any bucks in tow. I waited then took about 5 steps. I heard a crunch and I froze. A buck came up ove the rise through the moutnain laurel at about 20 feet. He walked right by me, picked up the does tracks and continued on. He was a 3x1 . I tried to slip my camera out, but by the time I let him pass, he was on his way and disappeared into the fog. The fog came in real thick at this point. I was contempleating what to do when I heard another deer coming. It was within 20 feet and I couldn't see him. I heard him grunt, so know it was a buck. He disappeared right after the others. I thought to myself holy moly maybe I out to sit here for a few minutes. The fog lifted and I spotted another doe. Then it was pea soup again. After that is was pretty much solid all day with rain. ALl good, I pray its snow up high. Found more sign than I thought I might, but still not many deer. Now I am trying to figure out whether to hunt the local bucks and hope a big one escaped, pack into the moutnains and go after them, or hunt the middle country and hope that some have migrated in even though there hasn't been much weather. Rain or snow, I hope the fog is gone tomorrow. I like hunting in patchy fog, probably my fave, but not this solid crap.
3 bucks ID, one not...only 9 doe

sounds like a good day

Perfect settings for those shots bone. Those are nice and sharp too. Keep with iso 400, f2.8, aperture priority and you are good to go 90% of the time. Good stuff.
-
Yep, pretty bad to have hi within 20 feet and not be able to see him. By the way, that really gets on your nerve when you have no clue where you are going and which end is up. THANK god I had the compass in the pack.
Thanks Ray.
Thanks POPE.
-
WOW!!! Nice pics Bone!!!
-
Thanks Slider. All three shots were freehand, no mono and not in the best of light. I was super impressed with how sharp that eagle came out and my flight photo. I haven't been able to get very good ones.
-
I'll see if I can get some buck pics tomorrow.
-
Doug I say stick it out for a while before moving up too high. Those big boys have got to be moving down reguarless of the snow. With the lack of snow you should be able to get to some of those honey holes you know up there. Even though you will be hunting with the bow the first part of the season those big boys will absolutely be down there by the end. You know by then they will congregate in those canyons like they did for me. Give them hell!!
-
those pics are awesome keep up the good work. be safe and good luck J
-
cool pics
-
Bone I'll be dissappointed if there isn't BBD 2008 post. Great pics.

So will I D-man, so will I.
Off I go. Round two of lets see who can get the wettest.
-
GOOD LUCK!!
-
Good luck Bone. Hope you stick a big one.
-
Man, I was going to say go high... But Skyval says stay lower and I respect his opinion so do that. :chuckle:
-
Good luck Bone, stick to the plan man. PM sent.
-
Was there any snow?
-
Wow Bone ... Those might be your best pics yet, great shots!!!! good luck with the bucks now! :)
-
Bone those pic are sweet ,I like the bald eagle! :o
-
Ok Bone the up comming snow will have them on the move. I know you will do us proud!! Just like when I had the tag the big boys will start materializing.
-
it's been dark a while now...
lets have an update.
-
Great Pics! Thanks.

It was a piece of crap day. I started out in the high country. I hiked almost up to 8,000 feet. No snow, just drizzle and fog. Rian I can handle. THe fog is a bitch. It cleared once in awhile, but then socked in tight. I found three sets of tracks, one of which was a buck and saw one doe. I abandoned the high country to get out of the fog. After wearing out my worn out knees, I tried to rustle up a hill in the unit that wasn't fogged in. I found some country down low. I left the truck and hadn't gone about a 100 yards and I ran intot he biggest buck track of the year. It was from a huge buck. I resisted following him and kept climbing. Then I found them again, this time a little older. I climbed some more and found a set going in the same direction but this one was just before the last rain. I was pretty excited. I got to a spot and I looked up at all the country. I said to myself. Where would I sit if I wanted to see everything so no one could sneak up on me. I found my spot, raised my binos, and there he was. FUNNY. I thought to myself if I can get within 40 yards of him I'll take him just for you guys. You'll see what I am talking about when you see his pic. He was a huge ole buck. I know the country well, so made about a mile circle and exploited the only weak spot where he was at. I closed to within 50 yards and busted a doe. I thought crap. THe doe was below me so wasn't sure how he would respond. I slipped up exposing myself at 40. NO BUCK. I went to where I thought he was and exposed myself there he was about 40 yards below me. I let him walk. Kind of still kicking myself jsut because....you guys would have teased me to the end about sooting him but I would have been proud to get within 40 yards int he sage on an 8 year old buck. Anyway, I continued hunting and saw several more does. I got pics of another buck as well.

when there was no fog....

You guys think you have big two points. You should come play withthe big boys.
I let him walk. He was a monster in body, his track was frickin enormous. He was one smart *censored*. I figured he was at least 81/2.
This picure was from about 1/2 mile away.

I'm feeling pretty good about this today, the weather should have been good for glassing today and Bone was heading to a spot where you can glass for hours. He may not have stuck anything but I'm betting he saw a few decent bucks at least.
-
Dont leave us hanging Doug! Hopefully its 1 hour past dark and you are just getting on the trail back to the truck after cleaning that 184 net buck!! :0)

-
I decided to go back and sit on that hot doe. It paid off. I found a spindly but wider 4 point. I dug out the camera and here comes a wall of fog. (https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv47%2Fboneaddict%2Ffogb.jpg&hash=07e5ae44063523ff6412ba7b961bb73d845b610d)

I hate the Fog also. It's very humbling. It's raining right now in Wenatchee so it's looking better for the late hunts!!! Good Luck tomorrow Bone :)
-
I stodd there for 15 and then it started to clear. I spotted another deer. It was a different buck.

-
There were bucks circling and posing, and here comes the fog. CRAP!!! I was hopeing it would go. Then I heard a wheeze, and then a huge buck fight erupted. 80 yards or less and I couldn't see it. It lasted for about 3 minutes and was very wild. THen nothing for a few and another big wheeze and then another big wheeze. I kept looking at the watch and it was time to go.
I started back and ran into this little guy.

Thanks GUYS! Long day today. 7 bucks and 11 does out in the woods. FOrgot to tell the story of touching the forehead of one. Maybe later. Thats getting close. LOL Time for bed, another big day tomorrow and I have some drying out to do. The valley floor between Twisp and Carlton had more deer than I have seen this fall so far. THats a good sign. I had to fish one out of the road that was smacked. See you guys tomorrow. My camera got wet, so hopefully there will be pics tomorrow. Yep Passion, if I see a non pisscutter, he dies. I am just happy to see a deer. By the way, found our little lovely wolf pack hunting grounds. That jsut cheered me up.

I am having a great hunt Michael. Mostly its nice to hunt country that I never get to or want to in the general because of so many people. The weather is marginal. I can handle rain and snow but this fog is a real pain. I poured all night so its really going to be a wet one today. If this was snow up high, they will be here shortly. I'm a little anxious to get this done so I can start photography full time. Feel like I am missing out. LOL I know I need my head examined. I told Idabooner that yesterday and he wondered if I had been in the palm trees lately. I looked at him funny and he said has a cocunut fallen on your head. I ope to find one of those bucks where I don't have to look to see if its big enough or not. Then I will know. but YES...I am having fun. Its fun to even watchlittle bucks rut. I wish I could have seen the fight. I know which two bucks it was two of the ones pictured above and they were fairly even matched.
-
You better grab a Mt Dew and get the hell out there, the suns coming up in a few hours. ;)
GOOD LUCK!!!
-
Go gettem!
-
Drinking a second cup of coffee this morning and listening to rain come down. Maybe the sky will run out before I have to go out there. :chuckle:
-
Well, it's been raining for 11 hours now in Wenatchee ... on the bright side, think how stealthy you'll be on all that soft wet vegetation!
-
Does a boneaddict make a thud in the woods when he falls down? :)
Should be about 8 inches of wet snow up there by now.
-
He only makes a thus if he has his rain gear on and he slides down the hill. Watch out for that treeeeeee!!!!
-
I cant belive you were lucky enough to draw that wolf tag! Holy Crap! :IBCOOL: Congrats man!!
Here's your forecast...point forecast for top of the canyon from across the river there...6147 feet.... uh...you bettet get her done tommorrow!!!! :yike:

-
Yep rained all night and is still raining. I'm headed to Quincy this mourning to get sod? Like it wasn't heavy enough already!!!......lol I'd much rather be hunting even in the rain!!! Go get um Bone!!!
-
i am confused isnt bones hunt a rifle tag but it sounds like he is using his bow, i know u can use a leser weapon during a rifle hunt but why? just curious
the only way to get to hunt the good rut draws with a bow, is to buy a rifle tag
-
Even though I didnt draw this tag, with all the GREAT pictures Bone is posting, it makes me feel like Im tagging along . Thanks for sharing these Bone. Hoping you drop a monster once the weather begins to cooperate.
Sage
-
I'm REAL curious to hear his report tonight!!! I got a feeling he's seen a pig or two today!!!
Michael
-
Did you get a little wet today buddy??? Get that jig done and drive your butt to Montana!!!
:hello:
E
-
duckfvr that is the difference between the people that love to hunt and have to kill something to feel good about themselves... Bone truely loves to hunt weather he kills something or not.
From your post you are one of those that has to kill something every time out no matter what.
It is what bone loves to do so let him do it, no need to question his tactics.
-
Bone feed me!!!! I jumped on here just to see how things went today. I heard a weather report that for Thursday the snow level was suppose to jump bck up to 7 or 8,000 ft.
-
I was at 5,000 LOL

As you can see it was a little nasty out there. By the way, to answer the question, does a boneaddict make a thud when he falls in the woods...YES and it usually follows by a few swear words, in his mind anyway. To answer your question Duck, I like to hunt with any sort of weapon. I started out with a rifle for the first half of the day this morning just because, and then went back to my bow, its lighter and you don't ahve to worry about getting rain on your scope. :) Basically I like hunting with a bow and bowsandhose was right. I like and want to hunt the methow on a rut tag. I have never liked the Entiat much, though this year I concede its probably better.
I started with a 3x4 and a few does right from my truck then a two point and another two point chasing does. More deer today, but not sure if thats because the fog lifted a bit, or they have moved in some. The fog came in thick about 10 so I came off the mountain about noon to lower elevation stuff. I traded the rifle in for a bow and went to work. I ended up seeing 8 more bucks. One was the biggest one pictured yesterday then abucnh of small ones and one that came really close to being deflated. I swear his Dad was the big three that I tried to get Wea300 on with his raffle permit. Same exact, except maybe that one big eyeguard, not sure about that, but anyhow, same configuration, just younger and smaller.
-
Idabooner thinks I am a fool for not killing this one when I had the chance. He just didn't have enough mass for me. He doesn't think I will do better this year. I figure I have lots of time.....

The neck on that one is HUGE! Good stuff buddy keep up the good work!
Michael
-
Booner... The boy kills em bigger every year...without! a special tag! Quit eggin him to kill a little one! :0) THe big boys will be falling in line with those does soon enough!
Doug...when does it end? Are you going to stick with the bow till the end? I actually did some bowhunting this last weekend...I'll have to tell ya about it soon.
E
-
I have to t he 18th I think. (kind of infringing on Montana) You'd think I know, but I usually tag out the first day in the first 15 minutes so never have to worry about it.... I thought about that this morning. I elk hunted for a today of 1 hour last year, and deer hunted for aobut an hour. LOL This year, I ahve been enjoying the hunt. Mostly I have the bow. I did carry the rifle for a coupel hours today just for fun. With this snow though, there should be some deer showing up.
-
There is a REAL BIG one where you got the one last year bud ;) Seriously. I saw it in June :dunno: Ancient
-
It looks kinda nasty up there now, hopefully he is on his way to me. Easier pack that way.
-
you made the right call not killing that buck, bud....keep at it and you'll get it done.
-
I'm glad your holding out for the buck you want. Man I'm salivating at the mouth looking at the animals you seeing. it looks like fun even in the snow and rain.
-
Hey i'm lovin the pic's keep em coming...what area is this?
-
The weather is in your favor, you might have some serious fun if you hold out a while. I like your method of hunting thee modern rut hunt with a bow. Last year after working on 300 and 400 yard shots with my 270 SM for my Chiwawa tag I had 5 different bucks under 30 yards and shot mine at 15! I was thinking how much fun that hunt would have been with my bow......Maybe next time. Good luck!
-
It's nice that you and phool have all the pressure this year and not me. Good luck and knock down a big one to put some pressure on bucklucky.
-
Great pics they are incredible. I love the late hunt can't wait to get drawn again.
I hope you get the one you are after.
john
-
Lovin the pics.
If you shoot a small one you'll never get a big one.
-
Way to go Bone, that buck has week G2's and mains, a 150 class at best. I will have to say he has a hawg of a body though. Much better bucks in that area and we both know it ;)
Keep up the faith brotha, tomorrow should be fog free and glassing should help you out a ton.
-
Might see a big whitetail this morning, should I dump him. LOL
-
Well...we will never know most likely, but I dont give that buck 125 phool...???
E
-
You dump a whitetail and I will do all I can to make sure the WDFW doesn't let you see another special late permit!! :chuckle:
Just go for that big Mossyhorn and no pissers. Montana can wait thats an easy meat hunt.
-
Indeed...I did not mean to rush the MT thing... you have till Nov 30th here! Or you could bowhunt whitetails in Missoula until Jan 15th!
-
Good luck bone....not that you really need it ;)
Been looking forward to hunting with you via the internet on your late hunt. Love the area that your in too, was planning on hunting around there this year prior to breaking my wrist.
-
I dont think id be going up there with this weather.... Hope you get the one you've been waiting for! :IBCOOL:
-
Well...we will never know most likely, but I dont give that buck 125 phool...???
I thought the top pic was a 4 point, I didn't know it was the 3 in the next pic. ;)

No big deal Duck. There are a couple disadvantages of packing stick and string versus Iron, such as this morning I was thinking of your question.
Standing there at about 100 yards for 10 minutes, he is not sure how lucky he is.

I was going to take today off and do some photography, but some friends on here gave me a good motivational speech, so I was back on the mountain, no matter how tired my legs are or sore my feet are. Its funny, anyone who thinks having this tag is a turkey shoot is nuts. I've hunted more with this tag than I have for the last 4 general seasons combined. LOL
ANyway, started out in the low country today. VERY FEW deer yet. No migrators on my side. Pearygin and Chiliwist are getting them, but not much for ALta yet. I spotted two does and two local little bucks first off. I had gone a long ways when I spotted this deer going away from me, taking his time climbing the hill. It looked like a whitetail from 400 yards out. Threw up the binos and it was a strange muley but looked like a decent buck. I grabbed the camera out of the backpack and snapped a couple at least to document him. Then the fart layed down. ANother perfect spot. I figured out the only way to approache and started. Then I picked up a couple does. They were right where I needed to go. THey were all looking at something so I figured another deer would show up, sure enough, another doe, then another then another. I was like OK wheres the buck, sure enough.....unfortunately all that excitement wasted on a two point. I didn't feel like taking his pics, sorry. I didn;t want them to spot me and spook. I waited until they cleared then headed up the mountain. I ran intot he coyote pictured above, then kept climbing. I got up to the top and edged closer to look over. No buck. CRAP!!! I figured he might take those 7 does away from that two point. So I moved a little further ahead then decided to look in the shade of my hill. Sure enough, I crept up to him and was about 20 yards above him, easily I could have sliced and diced. I decided to slip the pack off and get my camera out. Of course he heard the zipper and he took a couple bounds then stopped. Now take a gander at this *censored*s tail. What the heck? Mule deer with a little whitetail, or a blacktail .......The ass and tail are messed up. LOL

Shot a 3 point in Buck Meadows area of Ellensburg several years ago that looked just like that. Confusing tail and colors, but big ol body.
Here's praying for you Bone! Thanks for all the updates!
-
Your first sunny day, no fog, and you are sitting at the computer because???? :dunno:
That is a wierd tail...cant figure that one out for ya...could be either, but I'd have to say whitey more than blacky...????
-
That is a weird looking deer. I'm not sure if it has WT or BT genes :dunno: My guess would be WT because of the location but you never know? I saw a 4 point WT in Taneum about 20 years ago, that was long before the WT invasion in Wa.
-
Pisscutters. Bone you are going to score on the big one eventually. You still have 13 days on that permit so wait for the big guy. You wait they will COME!! :chuckle:
-
-
So you really aren't see any bigger bucks? :o
-
Bone, you're having the same problem we had in the Entiat last year... LOTS of bucks, but all YOUNG deer. Migrators were super slow and not a lot of mature bucks anyways...
Keep at it man wish I could come up there and hunt with you!!!
Michael
-
That deer hasn't much of a rack but he's sure thick. Pretty deer, if not a shooter.
-
that buck looks like something you would see in the greyback unit. are you sure youre not lost.
-
duck no prob, don't need a hug just yet... Just not really into others questioning methods...
Really is all about the hunt...
-
You are seeing what I am seeing Passion. THis is the WORST I have EVER seen this deer herd. ITs tragic. If I had a doe permit in downtown Twisp or Carlton it would be fine. I am hunting my ASS off and today I saw 4 bucks. Usually I am not even trying this time of year, relaxed and seeing 20-30 per day. Thats 20-30 bucks. I am hard pressed to see a deer, let alone a small buck, let alone a shooter. I am hoping the migration changes that. I went for a huge hike tonight....
I'll be back to finsih...
-
Dang man...he's there somewhere...you just gotta keep lookin...you gettin around or just hunting one big canyon or what???
White up high?? There's upwards of 14 inches of snow at the trailhead you camped at over here....23 up top... I am going back there next Sat...the 15th, for 5 days.... you'll be done by then! :0)
E
-
Man that sucks. There's gotta be one good one out there might have to wait until the end before he shows himself still pretty early :dunno:
-
Early for Sure... Be Patient young Grasshopper...

...did I mention I killed something today. :chuckle:

I hope your talking about a DEER!!! You tease post it UP!!! Congrats!

out with it i got to know :chuckle:

ok dinner is done. To answer your question Ernie I am hitting it from every angle from 8,000 feet to riverbottom. I am doing big hunts and then if I have anytime, little hunts or scouting missions. This morning I did a great hunt lower, or as low as you go. Then this afternoon I went to scout out some country I have never hunted....yep tahts how desperate I am getting. I skipped some classic country and went for some tweener country. Its real open, not even much sage. Not a single deer. I figured that was worthless so came out and went up the road into the snow to check tracks. One of the trailheads into the sawtooth that is pretty high......found two migrater tracks. They were HUGE!!!! I mean BIGGGGGG. I spotted them coming down the mountain and tracked them out for 4 miles. (in my truck picking them up on switchbacks and coming down the road) when I first saw them I thought, wow there are elk in here too. LOL Thats encouraging. Still though, it snowed yesterday and I travelled up a major drainage and 8 deer crossed the road. :dunno:
-
Its all Ducks fault. THis morning I had to let a coyote walk, so when I went and cliumbed this open mountain. Sort of like starting at the bottom of Oklahoma gulch and climbing to the top, I decided to carry the 06. I jumped him from under a tree. He ran full speed away from me and I shot him. One shot got him. I was HAPPy :chuckle: Way I figure it was therapy so my trigger finger was less itchy! Time to put the gun away and grab the stick and string.

Note the high peak in teh background. THats where those two sets of monster tracks came from. SOme of you wil know thats where the big ones are.
-
why is the unit called alta? JB
-
Ha! I knew you weren't talking about a deer! Great stuff man always feels good to smoke a yote!
I didn't know you'd been up the entiat? Whens the last time you were there?
Michael
-
nice song dog
-
Nice pic Doug...wow...I forgot how beautiful that country was!!
-
Thanks, seen more of them than deer. Crap birds. Truth is I thought it was a wolf. LOL JUST KIDDING PEOPLE! Alta Lake is in the unit, just outside of Pateros. I gues thats where it gets its name.
I haven't been up there in awhile Michael. I used to shed hunt it, but wore out my knees. Actually I stopped going after it burned. I think I went back last spring for a hike withthe Mrs, but thats it. I'll hit you Wenatchee boys up for some photo ops this winter.
-
Nice pic Doug...wow...I forgot how beautiful that country was!!
How beautiful it was? How about how beautiful it is!! I never get enough hiking around there every year.
Looks like you need more snow!!!
-
Boneaddict 1 Bad Dogs 0 ;)
Have you tried a snort weeze yet?
-
Heard one the other day, or several, along withthat big fight. I just can't do it like they do. I have the wheezing down, but not the snort. Need to practice that at home. :chuckle: If you can think of any other ideas Sky I am all ears. You're right, I probably have more shoe ideas than shoe leather but having trouble pinning them down. There is enough snow up in the rocks to drop them. Its bare at about 4500-5000. I think Its almost a good thing because it came down wet and it redefines CRUNCHY
-
So what do you contribute the decrease in numbers too? During the general season, didn't seem to be a lot of shooting going on?
-
Gotta be deer to shoot. Very hard winter and very late spring. The snow conditions withthe heavy crust and predation with coyotes (a few wolves) cats, dogs, decreased winter range, prior drought so poor forage.
Bench was the only one who commented on that deers ass. Should I put it in its own thread. WHat do ou guys think?
-
There was a crazy amount of bear sign in the mid elevations (3-5K ft) of that area during the general season.
-
So....ever have thoughts of desperation or fear of not seeing your buck when you were hunting....
-
I commented...i dont know what the heck it is doug??
Keep looking at does...the bucks will be with them shortly...you are way more experienced than I, but I'd think the bucks will be with the does for sure in a week ...
E
-
looks like whitetail blood to me.
-
Makes you wonder about the evolution theory behind blacktail. That looks like blacktail tail to me? :dunno:
-
great yote.
-
So....ever have thoughts of desperation or fear of not seeing your buck when you were hunting....
Not this early, you have lots of time. On the other hand, I was going crazy from Dec 29-31 last year.
-
I thought of you Ray when I busted him. Score is even now. I let one live, couldn't get one so they got the point and then dusted this one. LOL
I think and so does booner that its whitetail influence. The hind end looks whitetail. Then Muley influence everywhere else. LONG WAYS from any blacktail. LONG WAYS. WHen it was walking away from me, from a long ways away I was thinking whitetail. His tail is sure wacked.
Sort of like Nov 17 and 18th for me. COurse my daughters birthday is the 16th and I think Timber and I have a trip on the 19th and I would like to make sure a forest fire or a big logging operation hasn't wacked where I am taking him.
-
Hey Bone, can you go back and kill that Bench Buck that you got pictures of, I need that cape , bad :chuckle:
Looks like a bench buck to me, just the face , Tail , and tarsal glands are screaming blacktail. I had seen the crosses around CleElum but not sure how far that is from you.
-
Definitely looks like a hybrid to me as well. A very nice sized body on him.
Thanks for continuing to share your hunt with us.
-
Your welcome Dreaming...its fun. Kinda makes it more exciting, I can see why 300 felt some pressure. By the time I get home, get something in the gut, get the pics done and get to bed, I think I forgot a good shot of whiskey.
No problem Charlie. DId you note the cape on the three point earlier. Man I liked that black stripe.
-
Nearest blacktail is well, a long ways away. I saw one in Lime Creek once in the Twisp River but no one believed me. Damn near got in a fight about it in school. THat was 20 years ago.
-
like i said throw some oak trees in that pic and you have a klickitat buck. go get them bone and keep up the good fight. J
-
Theres roosevelt blood in the blues thats why there are so many non typical bulls down there. You never know where a buck or bull will migrate too :chuckle: Great capes on them bucks Bone. If you cant get a great big buck , do some cape shopping for me :chuckle:
-
I cant wait to hear todays report and see pics....
-
I wonder if Bone's going to bust out the buck roar.....
-
I just looked at the weather where he's at.... Looks like he'll be WET again today!
-
Its pretty awful over that way right now :(
-
I'll seccond the Klickitat bench buck for that rearend.
I hunt them every year and if you didnt say otherwise I would have placed that pic in Klickitat or Grayback.
The brown stripe down the middle and all the white on the rear sure does look like a whitey though. I think around Fort Lewis they have some whitetail/blacktail crosses. Maybe a pic of one of those would shed some light.
http://www.suwanneeriverranch.com/WTinfoL.htm
The above link seems to indicate that a cross wont survive very well becuase it doesnt know how to escape with a given method. Maybe you could find the deer again and jump it to see how it runs. If it stotts, maybe its just a goofy looking mule deer. If it runs, then maybe its a cross of some sort. If it runs and stotts, well then who knows. :dunno: :chuckle:
Could be fun research.

"So there I was.... stalking this supposedly hybrid buck when an idea popped into my head!"
LMAO (btw, not sure last night has fully worn off yet!) :dunno:

Bone thos are incredable picture's. i bought a Canon REBEL EOS XSi last week. want to get the big len's next. keep those picture's coming. Rick

I won the who can get wetter contest. Lots of action early and lots of action late. I killed something withthe bow, and hopefully have pics of one that I about *censored* myself for not shooting. Saw a BIG one that I didn't get on film, or shoot. Details to follow. I need to warm up, get something in the gut, dry some gear and look at some pics.
The deer stotted when I jumped him. THen pranced like a whitetail. LOL
-
Im ready :EAT:
-
SWEET stuff bone! Glad to see you're getting some action! I'm taking off tomorrow for Chewelah to hunt whiteys for the weekend! Lets hope one prances into a 150 grain federal!!!

The wait is killing me :chuckle:
-
I started out this morning right at snow line. There was about an inch and I was covering ground to get where I wanted to be. I had to walk through 8 foot tall Mt Laurel patch in the dark. THat was a great way to start out the day. WET immediately. I ran into three does right off the bat. THat was hopeful. THen I spot a whitetail buck standing out on a grassy flat. He was standing in a submissive posture which usually means there is another buck. I was watching and watching and then I spot movement in the tall grass. Here comes a coyote. RIGHT AT ME. I didn't wnat to screw up the whitetail thing so just held still. He walked up to about 10 feet from me and I was frozen solid. He stopped and knew something wasn't quite right. He turned and I couldn't resist. I slipped an arrow out and he turned to look at me. I froze again. He turned and I drew. He started to trot and I released. 25 yards, right through behind the back rib and out through his chest/shoulder. He died instantly. Nice pass through shot. The whitetail still hadn't moved. I watched and watched then sure enough here comes a deer. THe adrenalne mounted....nope, a small muledeer buck. He was also walking straight at me. He came to within about 10 feet, stopped, licked his lips and walked by me. I finally got tired of standing there and left him standing at about 20 feet and the whitetail buck still hadn't moved. I grabbed the yote and threw him under a tree. It was still too dark for any good pics. I headed up the mountain and about had the nastiest day ever. Saw a couple does but thats it. I came out finally in the afternoon, a beat pup. I heard crows and thought those *censored*s found my coyote. I got closer and there was a golden eagle on him. So much for my taxidermy Idea I came up with on the mountain.

This will certainly kick the bucks. Its snowing hard up high and its supposed to do this for a couple days. YIKES...... Might make life interesting. I came out and grabbed my good camera then headed to lower ground. I was sick of the fog. Here is the first buck I ran into worth taking a pic of

so shortly from here, I saw the first big one of the year. He was about 60 yards away. Unfortunately he spotted me long before I seen him in the big sage. The next mistake I made was going fro my binos instead of pulling my gun out of my pack. I was using my bow, and packing the rifle in the backpack. He reeled and I thought crap. I disappeared over the edge and I poured it on to get to him. I cleared the top and he was gone. I was hoping for a slope, but it was a bunch of broken ridges. NO DEER...... He was the first MOUNTAIN buck I have seen. I have no idea how many points. He was about 28 and about 6 inch bases so and mega mass. I could care less what he scored. While trying to find him I ran into the next buck.
-
My last two general season Alta hunts have been wet and snowy. I can relate...
-
wet and snowy means the big boys are comin down!
I can't wait until we get a couple mild winters and have that tag in my grubby little mitts.
Love the storytelling. Keep up the good work!
-
Doug surprised you didn't run into more deer up there. Well atleast you did get on one big boy. Things are definately looking up and soon enough you will be waist deep in them. Thanks for keeping us posted on the days events. Are those feet of yours webbed yet? Let me guess what the plan for tomorrow is? Try to stay somewhat dry!!
-
I honestly am debating tomorrow. I am heading home for the weekend to see the family. Not sure if I can physically pull it out. I almost wasn't physical or had enough leg left, even with adrenaline to get to that bugger. Here is the next one. I watched him and decided he was only about a 160 deer. THen the fart had to stand up and look at me at this angle and I about *censored* myself.....

Thats a nice buck but his left sides a little weak :dunno: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
Yep and not enough mass. He was a "raghorn" compared to the one I had just seen.
-
Man your out doing me on coyotes now, I need to get out and start putting the hurt on some dogs.
Looks like your getting closer to that big one, get some rest and dont give up.
-
Looks like some adults just got to the party........one more day time to get it done :hello:
-
sweet! I wish I could have seen the big one too! That other is nice, but of course, not nice enough for this tag...unless it was later and he was 16 yards broadside and you had the hawk in your hand!!
E
-
First of all ERnie, lets talk lens. The Panasonic took 5 pics, all too dark and too blurred to see the deer. That was 450 yards, almost dark, leaning on my truck freehand....and the deer was in the fog. I am so jacked about this lens. Same with the next picture. Then the two of the two point, it was almost dark, not even able to read. Autofocus wouldn't work. HOLY CRAP!!!

Hey Boneadditct my wife has been checking out of your pictures and thought you should create a wildlife calendar.
I asked this earlier but I think you missed it...With this type of tag what size buck are you holding out for? Just curious
-
another nice TWO

If only you would have picked the rifle instead of the binos ;) Nice pics !
-
again it was essentially dark with this pic....

Yeah Bucklucky, I was a sight this afternoon. Bow in one hand, 12 pound camera in the other, rifle on my back. I need a couple sherpas. Maybe one to carry me. No wonder my legs are tired...
not only were those afterdark practically, it just dawned on me that I had the extender on it for the buck on the ridge. That cost me another F stop. WOW, even if this thing was 13 pounds I'd still carry it.
NW. THank you! My standards were a 180 buck, any buck with trash or a 30 incher. I'd also take any super recessed old one if he was mossyhorned. I'd take a 170 with my bow. The buck I saw this afternoon would have died from shear mass and size. I have no idea how many points he had.
-
Funny thing about that two. I have sheds from his Grandpa that are identical. Two and a half sets as a matter of fact. THat was 20 years ago. THey are identical in how they are shaped.
-
Well its fun seeing your pics and stories about your hunt. You just werent meant to kill that big *censored* yet! Its how I look at it ;). Good luck! Get them legs back under ya and hit it hard! Its only just begun!! ;)
-
That poor 'ol deuce got his arse whooped... Great pics, really tell the story.
-
I sure enjoy seeing those pictures of some of the bucks you are seeing. Adds to the hunt story! Wish I had a good camera to do that too!
-
It's been a great read to follow along on your hunt...starting to wonder if you're ever coming back! Great pics along the way!
-
keep up the good work atleast youre seeing swollen-necked bucks. nice post and i love the pics J
-
Great stories and pictures! Good luck on getting that monster!
-
Thanks everyone. DOn't panic if you don't hear from me over the weekend. I need to take care of some things at home then resume the hunt.
-
Bone,
You and WEA300 do this sight proud. Great stories and pics. Hope you score. I'd like to thank you and all for lugging the cameras to take those pics. Truthfully though, I'd like to see some serious trash!
N

good luck at home :chuckle:
-
good luck at home :chuckle:
My thoughts too! haha
Best of luck Bone! We know even if she tells you to stay home you'll be back on Monday! :chuckle: :chuckle:
Michael
-
wow heck of a way to start off the month, keep the pics coming
-
YOU can bet I'll be back on Monday. Going to go look for that big *censored* this morning. Doubt like heck he will even be in the neighborhood, but just can't walk away. Then home to see the family.
-
good luck
-
Sounds good Doug...take care of those girls at home, then get back after it!
You'd be proud, I'll be carrying the hawk around this weekend after mulies too...should have some decent pics to share...
E
-
By the way...that is amazing. Similar to how these high end binos work... by the way...what Bino's are you using??
E
-
Good luck!
Michael
-
This is great stuff, thanks for the stories and pics... now if only I could shut this page down and get some work done. :)
-
By the way...that is amazing. Similar to how these high end binos work... by the way...what Bino's are you using??
E
Not sure what he normally uses, but I sent him the ZR 10x42 for his field trial. They work pretty damn well in my book!
-
ZR? Zeiss?
-
I didn't read the whole post boneadict, but whats your opinion on that blactail looking 3pt? Are you committed to using your bow the entire hunt? Big boys will start showing themselves around the 10th - 12th!!
-
Zen-Ray Vista. New site sponsor. See the optics threads. They seem to be very nice and great for the $$. I used them for 2 weeks, then sent them on the Bone. He got them before he left for the first day.
-
Cool...
Bone is going to use his bow if it comes together, but is packing smoke pole just in case...!! Like I am doing this weeekend!
-
I love that idea of using your bow during the late rifle hunt. I'm going to have to do that sometime too. Bow hunting in the rut is soooo fun, especially when you get good weather that lets you sneak quietly. Then if sh*t gets sideways you can pull out the hammer! When the fog is super thick the old scope isn't much good anyway so why not pull out the stick slinger?
-
Awesome pics....those are some big bodied animals
-
Hang in there bone, glad your seeing some big ones.
-
"im gonna missya this weekend...course...it wont be bad cause I'll be out hunting and wont be at the computer!
-
My dad is home. Yay!!! He didn't get anything today. He looks really wet. He said he got good pics of a nice one but, will post them later after he spends time with us. :)
-
Thanks Lil Bone for the report, I've been checking all day to see if he found the big one!
-
We are all looking forward to it Lil Bone! But dont let him post them until you have gotten your fill of HUGS!!! :IBCOOL: ;)
-
OK - times up.
-
A BIG BUCK OR BIG BULL COULD NEVER TOP THE FEELING THAT YOU GET FROM A HUG FROM YOURE DAUGHTERS. I HAVE 2 AND WHEN I GET HOME HEARING I LOVE YOU DADDY I MISSED YOU IS AWESOME. keep up the good work BONE. J
-
He looks really wet
:lol4:
-
WELCOME ABOARD LIL BONE!!!!!! :hello:
Lets make sure we are all on our best behavior, and watch the potty mouth!!!!!! :chuckle:
We got young ones on here! :P
Enough hugs, where is the post

Sorry fellas for the delay. I was going to take the day off and go scout for my photography trip. I have a virus brewing and thought taking a day off early would be better than later. I couldn't do it though, not after seeing that big on ethe day before. It was a day, or at least morning on the mountain as usual. The fog wasn't too bad early except for my glasses and binos. It was the right temp to be absolutely miserable. There was a couple inches of snow on the ground and pouring rain. I don't think I could have gotten any more wet than if I jumped in a lake with my boots on. Lil Bone was right, I was wet. To top it off, I did'nt see a frickin deer. Some of the best deer country in the world and no deer. I found a group of 8 that had come off the hill with one small buck in the group (tracks) and then 4 singles, all bucks all going downhill. Thats a good sign I guess, except where I was was supposed to be where they stopped. :chuckle: It fogged in solid about 10 and that was my que to leave. I was miserable anyway. I took my coat off and had a long sleeve shirt on so I would be cold so I would quit foggging up my glasses. Hard to explain. I won't forget my contacts this time. Anyhow I started heading out and I cut a HUGE and I mena HUGE track. Its the biggest deer track I have ever seen, and believe me, I've seen a couple. If I would have been in elk country, I wouldn't have even noticed probably. I followed that thing off the mountain and fortunately he was headed to my truck. Unfortunately he walked by my truck while I wasn't sitting in it. Literally within 50 y :chuckle:rds of where I was parked. I have no idea where he was headed as we were about as low as you go....... I dinked a little bit in a another spot before heading home and came up with these pics. This buck may have been a contender for me with the bow if he hadn't broken his beam. I liked him and was camped on his ass like glue. I could have had an easy bow kill with him. The little buck and the doe was for fun. I thought the doe looked cool in all the brush. Now it will be a relaxing day trying to get over this bug, drinking coffee, enjoying the rain from inside, wishing I was hunting, but glad to see my family. Did I mention, wishing I was out as the weather is perfect for big bucks. :chuckle:

Well , I guess sometimes it does pay to sit in the truck :chuckle:
-
keep up the good work and stay warm
-
That just looks miserable.......I swear I can see the rain in some of the photos :yike:
-
Thats nothing Passion. Up in the snow and fog was where it was real nasty. That wet snow is well WET. I swear I had a krink in my neck because I was so used to snow going down the back of my neck from teh brush above. 4 inches of snow and raining, it was flat wet. Fun on those steep canyons and that damn grass or buckskin limbs. I went snowboarding once WHOOOOWHOOOOOO.
I'd do just about anything to see what made those tracks. Even a glimpse. They were unreal. I almost dug outhe camera and took a pic of it, but it was just nasty, plus they were fresh enough I was more interested in the deer than showing the track. At least I can add track soup to my tag soup. One of the biggest bucks I have seen killed in the Methow was a guy sitting in his station wagon drinking coffee from his thermos. It was his first day hunting ever and was parked on the road by a clearcut, and this monster walked out. he shot it, drug it to the station wagon and then drove to the gas station. He didn't know how to gut it even. He pulled up to our gas station and I see this deer sticking out the back of his stationwagon. LOL Idabooner probably remembers that.
-
Great updates bone, those of us on the wetside know what you are talking about, that's a standard day of blacktail hunting over here. :chuckle:
-
Well let just hope those big boys get into the heat of the rut and their natural instincts lessen so you can take one. Have you seen any sparring going on yet?
-
You want the one with the white face and roman nose. The horns will take care of themselves. He's up there somewhere.
-
Ive been out on some wet days on the westside but I think that when it rains in the methow its worse just seems like the rain is really wet and there is nowhere to hide :twocents:
Glad to hear there as 1-2 good bucks in the hood :P
-
They are there Sky, I had that one all out buckfight in front of me in the fog but I couldn't see it. It was fun to listen too. There were 5 bucks there. No bruisers, but it would ahve been fun to watch. I am with you Vek. That is exactly the type of buck I want. Screw the antlers, I want a big mountain old timer. My biggest problem has been the fog and finding the deer. Seems like all the middle country and low where I normally find the bucks or where they finally move into is vacant. All the does are down in yards. Not sure where the big ones will end up. Seems like all of the Traditional spots are adding up to a big zero. I have noted some mountain does showing up in other units, and have been hopeful that they would fill in the gaps and not end up in the yard of the nearest tree hugger. We shall see. My hunt is essentially half over. Time to get out the "man juice" and round one of those big buggers up. I can rule out the high country now. No way in hell would I even consider being back there now. I am hoping the snow holds high but he rain takes it out in the middle country so it sin't so crunchy. I can track just fine without it and see if the fog ever lifts. Hard to close the gap down to 30-40 yards in crunchy snow.
-
good luck on the rest of your hunt. It seemed like last year they peaked at about the first part of this coming week and then they were all grouped back up by the end of the week. sounds like you could use some good weather. Which it seems like it is generally the other way.
-
got the hands and boots snowsealed for round 2. I was thinking abut coating myself and the rest of my clothes in it. LOL
I shaved all my natural camo off, the Mrs didn't like it too much and it was in the drive me nuts stage. Now I am thinking about getting a haircut so I can look fresh with my fiield photo. :)
-
Enjoying your ongoing story , it is getting me revved up for my entiat bow hunt coming up soon. Do you think the lack of deer in the spots you were expecting to see them in is due to winter kill last year or are they just not down yet? Keep up the good work and good luck. nwhunter
-
I am afraid it is due to the winterkill for the most part. Most are on their way down and should be in that country I hope I am wrong enough to have one show up. I am thinking about trying some rattling and grunting for muleys. I haven't had much luck with them but I have brought in some does with it while trying it on whitetails. Going to try all the tricks I think. I hear the Entiat herd is in ALOT better shape, which makes sense. They didn't have the deep crusted snow that the Methow had, so you should have a great hunt. What are you holding out for? ...anything with bone, or what size?
-
I was afraid of it being the winterkill. Too bad and hope this winter will be better and let them recover a bit. As far as the entiat tag there are three of us hunting togethor and will probably hold out for descent bucks for the first 4-5 days and then try to bring home some meat. Descent for me is in the 24" neighborhood with a bow in this state. Hope to see some hogs like we have in the past but with all the tags for the last several years not holding my breath. GOod luck on your hunt. nwhunter
-
great pictures, i love the rain...but i know how it is to be walking hitting brush and it seems like every little drop of water is stickin to yah...good work!keep it up
-
Bench was the only one who commented on that deers ass. Should I put it in its own thread. WHat do ou guys think?
Blacktail-mule deer cross is my guess.
-
Hey Bone I now know how you feel with the wet and fog! Just spent the last two days up around Chewelah huntin whiteys and it was TOUGH! Saw deer everyday but only does and fawns, not a single buck and the temps were a little warm... I hunted this morning in a T shirt but we were walking fourwheeler trails as thats the only way to get through that country cause its so thick!
Had my Rivers West and good Rain pants on so I stayed relatively dry but the visibility was an average 20-60 yards with that damn fog!!!
Oh well had fun and got to stay in a sweet wall tent and hunt private ground with good people so we had some good laughs and lots of fun... Best of luck the rest of the hunt I know you'll get it done!
Michael
-
Sounds like a good weekend Michael. I jsut had some down time with the family and will be headed back shortly. I'll be back at it in the morning. i have a virus so hoping it disappears. No matter, I will be on duty. Hope they are down and at it this week. Its already dipping into being late for Muelys though I know they will be still active.
Glad you had fun chasing whittails. Nice to have some private stuff to hunt.
-
Ya we seen deer, but I'm not much into hunting the thick stuff.... This weekend I used my binos by far the LEAST I have ever used them! Seemed like we would walk all day long on fourwheeler trails... We sat maybe an hour all weekend but we seen deer and they've hunted that land for a lot of years and had luck... from what I hear they had a pretty nasty winter kill and the weather was the worst they'd seen in a LONG time...
Michael
-
Need to still use your binos. LOTS, its unlike that open Wenatchee country though. You need to pick apart the brush. They will stand and let you walk right on by and never move. Your only saving grace is if the rut is making them move at all.
-
Ya I hear ya... oh well maybe next year!!!
Oh wait... I'll be an Idaho Resident next year! :IBCOOL:
Michael
-
I hate to tell you, there is alot more of that same country in Idaho. The only difference will be that you will have to hunt elk, muledeer and whitetails in it. :) Thats not such a bad thing, except it takes a bit getting used to being within 30 yards or 30 feet of animals and not being able to see them. Heck, you might even take up bowhunting.
-

I archery hunted for deer/elk the last two years (didn't really do elk except for my '07 Peaches Tag but didn't score) and went back to modern this year so we could do the high hunt... I missed archery this year! Especially because my thanksgiving break falls right into the late archery swakane hunt!!!! :bash:
Planning on going archery big bull here in Idaho, and muley hunting from the 10-10 to 11-4 about 3 hours from here... Got some great areas lined up and I'm buying my lifetime hunting license...
I tell you I might be working for the USFS up out of Winthrop this summer??? Dealing with their 20 grazing allottments and riparian area management as well... Really hope it works out!
Michael
-
Not sure how you passed up on that one on the bottom of Page 7...geez...thanks for all the write ups, etc...great pics.
-
THats what Idabooner thought Saylean. Here we go for round TWO.
-
The buck on page 7 is a tough call. Reason being with the evident higher winter kill from last winter. On a normal year following a few mild winters I would say to pass on him as i know that there are some monsters out there. But I also know Bone has been putting in alot of effort and hasn't seen the Real big mossyhorns. But also you have to remember he has seen some huge tracks and just missed seeing them along with the fact he got a glimpse of one alot bigger going over the ridge. That Alta tag is one of the top tags in the state but you have to know the area. I have seen some absolute monsters there but that has been over the years.
-
Go gettum Doug...keep an eye out for my post tonight as I have some muley pics....of bucks that you'd let go on without hesitation... I came close...
E
-
ok Doug I am jones,en for my fix please hurry up and post todays results, I cant take the suspence! JB
-
So....???? What all the precipitation over the weekend get you??? ;)
Michael
-
maybe he melted? JB
-
I shaved all my natural camo off,
that should cut down on bigfoot sightings :IBCOOL:
-
There is a 190 buck in a unit you dont have a tag for......... :'(
-
:chuckle: Thats damn funny jdb. Thanks for letting me blow coke out my nose on that one. Eyes are still burning. Sorry guys. A long day on the mountain today. You guys are going to be pissed about no pics. I saw 15 does and 4 bucks, one slightly bigger than page 7 but he wouldn't let me close the deal with the bow, so maybe tomorrow. Fog was in and out. Always when I needed to see something I think. The mountain deer are showing up. Here was an interesting Bone observation. All of the local deer are with fawns, or at least most of them, but all the mountain does I saw today were in singles. I wonder what that means. More predators up high and all the fawns got nailed. They got seperated in the migration....I hadn't noticed that before.
Where is he Passion, I'll go take his picture when I am done tomorrow.
I am one tired son of a gun tonight. Dawn til dark..go go go. Sky is right, this is or normally would be a premier hunt. Its slim this year but by God I am going to make the best of this tag even if I have to eat it plain. What do I have, 8 more days or so with a daughters birthday...mayb eto morrow if I can walk.
-
190....DOOOOH!!!!
Doug...would you whack this guy??
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv351%2Fhornseeker%2Fmule%2520deer%2FBig2scope.jpg&hash=ad0862fadddce8a1cdaa1b7ca252bb2f75a524bb)
-
I might if he was standing at 20 yards and I had my bow in my hand, but I'd rather not. His frame is great with great points, but I am after moss, mass and just plain old. I want to knock off an oldtimer. That thing needs some age. Vek really summed it up the other night. I am after one of those bucks you can't chew. I am hearing of lots hitting the ground. I think all the ALta guys are starting to follow me around. LOL I am having trouble deciding what to do in the morning. I found more deer sign or does than I have anywhere. Mountain deer. I wonder if I should go back, or go back to where that monster was. NOT SURE. THis is the part I hate. Too many ridges to check out. I need to shoot one so I can go photograph some of these other units.
-
Just think Bone, that mossy horned ol'timer is just a ridge away! You just never know. Go with your gut when you get there!
-
Sounds like a tough day bone! If I weren't in school right now I'd come up and hike some of those ridges with you to save you some leg work! That is if you'd let me hang out hunting with you for a day or two! Hell I'd like to just be there to watch you track a buck a couple miles in that country! Great job and keep it up!
Michael
-
"I am after one of those bucks you can't chew."
LOL. Sway-backed and grizzled.
-
going back to the same spot I think. The fog is high by the looks of the moon and we are supposed to get rain today. I think I will take advantage of the higher ceiling to go high. Hit lower stuff when its down.... Found where there are some deer, so thats the first battle. Now one of those buck would be nice.
-
Da da dat da da CHARGE!!!!! Go get em Doug!!!!
-
Well...I wish you the best of luck in that quest...but that deer back a few with the broken side is nothing like the buck i just posted a pic of and you said you may have taken him if he wasn't broken.. Or maybe you didnt?? I dont know...you have confused me!! :o
The buck in the photo is a good looking buck...I watched him for a 1/2 hour and I think you'd be crazy to let him walk!! :0)
Here's another...little more age to this guy...

Why didnt you shoot him? :dunno:

If you're referring to the pics that hornseeker posted then he WAS in fact in Montana for those pics... ;)
Michael

:) ;)
I'd put an arrow or bullet in him in WA or MT..Or ID! NO hesistation! I was just being a smart ass to bone... :IBCOOL:
-
Well boys, hes not off the mountain yet. Thats either a good sign or a bad sign. :dunno:
-
Good Lookin pup Booner... send me a pic, jandemckenzie@q.com and I'll forward it to my mom and dad... they sure love them Bull Dogs!
He is gettin into them today...they're keeping him out late!! (hopefully boning one out!)
E
-
Keep us informed Ibabooner. Positive thinking hes packing out that mossy horned buck. Hopefully he doesn't try to pack it all out in one load!!
-

Come on Bone !
-
I HOPE THAT WE HEARE GOOD NEWS.
-
Tag is notched. It will be awhile for pics. Not trying to torture you, but I have had a busy day. You guys will prbably be disappointed with me but I had a great hunt. I found an old one and put the moves on him. He was busy watching a 4 point running some does or courting them. He was just watching letting the young guy do the work. I managed to take a live pic of him I'll post it if it turns out then closed the gap with the longbow. It was wide open and for only the 2nd time in 9 days hunting, it wasn't completely fogged in. I spent the morning in the fog then went elsewhere. The deer are really starting to move. I hoped for something much bigger, but he will do nicely. Now I will get to do some photography and probably see a crap load bigger bucks and you guys can see whats out there. The Sapphire hawk strikes again. I can honestly say that its the hardest I have hunted for something and I spent alot of time in glorious country, mostly to see white. The greatest part was literally being alone out there. Very little competetion. Funny thing is I have killed many bigger bucks with the general tag, but thats ok. I'll get pics up as soon as possible. I am going to go out in the morning to try to get a big one on film. I heard about him tonight. He was not in my unit and boy am I glad of that. They are really starting to show up so this should be fun.
-
Good job. You stuck to your bow and scored.
-
Congrats bone!!!! Look forward to seeing the pictures of your buck. As soon as my hand heals and I can take this cast off I am hoping to make a trip over and try and catch a few migraters on camera too, get some rest.....you earned it.
-
Sweet! Congrats buddy!!
-
SWEET! congrats on gettin it done bone
-
Congrats to you Doug!!! Way to go and you were able to take that bad boy with your bow. Awesome, I can't wait to see the pics. Were you able to get it out relatively easy or was it a tough haul? Now you can get some much deserved rest. Be safe out there.
-
Way to stay with it..... :IBCOOL:
-
Never had a doubt! Sweet to do it with the long bow as well; that is one great accomplishment!
-
way to go bone...you earned it...big one or little one doesn't matter, as long as you had a good time and enjoyed yourself on the mountain.
now post some dang pics already.
-
Congrats bone!!!! You are something else to be able to be sooo successful using that equipment.....Ur incredible!!!! Congrats, you deserved every bit of it!! Justin
-
Good job, now this thread won't be the most read thread in the history of the website, I was beginning to get worried it was going to be the new number one.
-
way to go  congrats
-
I'm not sure my knees would have lasted that long that and the fog. I was about to start launching arrows into it to open up some holes to let some air in. 8 out of 9 days in the fog. Its fun hearing grunts and not being able to see them. Horns slammin, wheezing, you name it. He is a good buck and was one of my goals. He didn't have much for teeth left, and was probably on the downhill slide. I have some regrets as I know I could have done better. I try to get that mindset out though. It was a good hunt. It was one of the worst I had seen it in this unit. No roadhunting....all showleather and getting in there. At least I lost a bunch of weight. I had a decent pack Sky. Mostly because I gave up on some of the big bad country up by the lookout and got below the ceiling. I was sick of it. Now maybe I will get an Idaho or a Montana hunt in and some good photography. Bonus thing was, hes bigger than a two point.
On a side note, Michelle, that caping method is a PAIN IN THEASS ou t in the woods!
-
On a sidemote Ridge, I have two 190s located and this is where you'll have to come to see them if I find them tomorrow. j/k
Thanks everyone for your support. I hope I didn't fling that arrow too fast.
-
pics
:)
-
You sound tired - those legs and feet get worn out on long hunt like that. I know that country well, and it wears you out.
It's been fun for all of us to check in and talk to you about the hunt every night. A mature buck is always a great trophy, especially when you do it the way you did.
Now who's gonna chronicle their hunt when Bone's done? I'm having withdrawals already.
-
There are still elk and deer waiting over here! :0)
Get some rest...and get some new pics tommorrow!
E
-
Great I thought you were gonna keep sringing us along :chuckle: Can't wait for the picturs
-
Glad to hear you stuck an old *censored*! I think you might have jumped the gun a bit though ;) You'll probably see that gigantic 280 nontypical triple drop tine buck tomorrow :chuckle: Oh , at 20 yards!
Congrats man, cant wait to see the photos!
-
Sweetttt, cant wait to see the pics.
-
Congrats Bone! Sending a PM here shortly!
Michael
-
I think Doug is probably soaking in a nice warm tub of Epson Salts right now, give him some time to recoupe :P
-
i will bet that the hugs will be nice when you get home. congrats you earned it. J
-
Way to go Bone!!! Sounds like fun times and a lot of good memories made on this hunt. Cant wait to see the pictures. But the best part is now its almost time for the Deer safari to start getting posted. Congrats on your hunt and your buck.
Sage

Congrats.
-
Congrat. Great pics and write ups. I cant wait to see the Buck!
-
Congrats Bone! Can't wait for the pics.
-
Congrats Bone. U R my idol. LOL
-
Good grief, Doug, Pics already! While we're young!
-
Yeah benchleg she did a jig once she heard I wasn't going to miss her birthday. THat was some serious concern if I hadn't tagged yet. Most likely I would have driven down for the day. If I would have been on the mountain I wouldn;t have been able to think about hunting and if I was at her party, I would have been on the mountain. :)
They are coming guys. Camera never even made it in from the truck. I have two 190 class bucks, both on opposite ends of the Valley that I am after this morning with the big lens. I'd love to see them and share them with you. I promise I'll get pics on here before I go to Idaho and Montana to stick my other two big ones, LOL Guess what...its pouring rain and I can almost bet my mountain is fogged in. How sweet it is to have it hanging. I am so damn sore I almost couldn't wrangle up a coffee cup. It wasn't too bad of a pack out SKY. I had to shoot the biggest damn deer on the planet. I packed him out in one trip. Cut up he weighed about as much as a giant moose quarter. :)
-
Sweet Bone I am glad you got your Old Cogger of the mountain. Sure is warm and wet over here on the wet side today temp about 58 at 4 am. I am sure the snow level is way up there today. I would much rather be hiking in some cold, snowy weather than this warm wet stuff whereits so muggy you sweat to death under your rain slicker. Can't wait to see some pictures of the big Kahoonah!! :chuckle: Be safe out there.
-
You are going to go out in the rain AGAIN!!!!????? you da man.
Give me a call today or soon and I'll tell ya what I know about MT...
E
-
Can I hunt bow during the rifle like I can in Washington or is it specific about that?
You are going to probably be disappointed in me. Especially after I said I wouldn't shoot that 4. Course I did add a disclaimer that I would with my bow if I could get in range. ;)
-
congrats on another fine ending to this years saga. (not to sound too dramatic, a guy just doesn't getto use saga in a sentence very often) bring on the pics.
-
Bones, Congratulations! it has been a pleasure reading your daily log-ins.
"Long time observer, first time posting"... I have been checking in on this site over the last couple of years, always from afar. What has always captured my attention was the "Pic's" and "The Story". Usually I could get caught up on both in a monthly log-in. Over the last week and a half My co-workers and I have been have been checking your story every morning and before we leave, awaiting on pins and needles for the next picture and story to go with your day. Basically, I did not want it to go un-noticed.
THANK YOU, for your time and effort you have put in to this it hasn't gone un noticed.
-
Tease! It only takes 5 min to post one picture... you can save the story for later! :'(
-
Good luck today...as always look forward to the pic's. Hopefully it dries out a little bit for you too, it's starting to flood here on the west side.
-
Good job Bone. And like some earlier posts, thanks for lugging the camera along.
-
Bone, I have enjoyed all your stories and pictures. I have made it a point to check this one out every day. Love it, and what a great job. As you know, the trophy is in the eyes of the hunter............plus how great a hunt adds to it. Thanks, Now can you post those pics ;)
-
See, im not the only one that is slow with the pics!!!!!! :P
-
lets have some bruiser buck pics
:fire.:

Sorry, but I'm having a hard time feeling sorry for you. Congrats on your buck! :IBCOOL:
-
:party1: I want to see some pics...
-
:sry: Please ... give us some BONE! All this anticipation is making me FrEaKoUt!
-
Sorry guys, had to travel half the state, take pictures of a big one IN MY UNIT that I didn't get and look for those 190s which I didn't find. I gave up on one as it was the wrong time of day, and went after another. I am sure he was there as it was the biggest herd of does I have seen out in the hills (not in a field), but I sure couldn't find him. Could be why he is BIG. Anyway. It has dawned on me that I must have been excited as half of my pics of the buck I cut my head off. LOL I guess you probably would rather look at the buck anyhow.....Here he is. At least one pic. I just finished cutting and wrapping him. Now I am off to Idaho I think in the morning at 0200. Lets see if I can get this done quickly. I have a few loose ends to check. Like is the season still open. :chuckle:
By the way, before I get attacked by the orange police, it was on. I didn't want it in the pics. Thanks for being concerned though. I still don't know if I even had to wear it, but I did.

Congrats Bone! Sounds like a really good trip. Thanks for the constant updates and pics you posted. Always enjoyable. Much appreciated.
-
Grats Bone. He's great. Thanks for all the pics/write up
-
his neck was slightly larger than swollen. Then to top it all off, I didn't have my tape with me to measure his neck, and I did Michelles neck technique for the first time. Can't say I will ever do that again. ANyhow I am not sure how I will get an accurate measurement.

His neck looks swollen :o
Nice work!
+1 :yike:
Congrats!! awesome buck.
-
Look at that cape!!! You need to do one of them swelled neck nounts and get that hair fluffed up too! I can see an awesome mount with that buck! Are you gona tan it yourself? If you have an extra form lying around test fit it on that first. I have a big swell neck form I test fit mine on and then measure the differance . Or if the cape is larger leasure the over lap.
Great Mature buck you got there Doug! I love the dark horns also! Wish you were closer I would give you a hand when you mount him!
Good luck in Idaho! ......and Montana?
Congrats again!
-
He is going to be a fun one to find a form for. He has a really short nose, HUGE neck and just for you VEK, the Roman Nose pic! I haven't got a tape on his bases yet, but he has some pretty good burrs and mass.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv47%2Fboneaddict%2Fnose.jpg&hash=4f5718669ee529f1e325fde0eaa335de15edbfd7)
-
I probably will tan him myself though if I get one in Idaho or Montana I might think about sending them to a tannery. I have never done that before. Thanks Charlie! He met one of my goals as an old buck. Thats for sure. Now I need to pack and get some stuff found, like my tag. LOL I think its in my pack but I better check. I assume my spot is still open but I need to confirm.
-
What did his nose tape out to? Sure its not longer than you think? Looks like a real heavy headed bugger, could be decieving.
-
you and that damn longbow ;) congrats bone!!
-
How do you do it..... Freaking nice buck man.
-
I got it at 7 1/8 I figured it would be bigger and that I was making a measurement error. then I looked at his pic and it does look short.
-
ps I hat measuring after the animal has been caped.
-
I do too! Thats the nice thing about haveing extra forms laying around ;) 7 1/8 is definately short :chuckle:
-
No doubt about it you have some serious skills and dedication. Nice buck anytime!!!
-
WOW!!! He was worth the Wait!!! Beautiful Buck
-
No doubt about it you have some serious skills and dedication. Nice buck anytime!!!
I agree! I admire your persistence! Congratulations on a good looking, beautiful buck......and good luck in Idaho!

Great buck Bone! I'm sorry it's over though. It was the hilight of my day waiting for my late hunt to start Nov. 30th. Let me know if you want help when it comes time to mount him. I'm just over here in Tieton.

-
GREAT buck Doug! Congrats man its been fun!!!
Michael
-
Can't believe I missed your buck Bone. Great looking buck.
When you said you are using my technique for caping. Are you talking about a Short "Y" Incision? You can get an accurate measurment. Let me know when you are ready to measure. Sure saves a lot of sewing.
-
Just SWEET Bone!!! That nose is more beautiful than Barbara Streisands' shnauz!!!!! How close did you get before you stung him?
PS. I like the jacket, I have the same one, guess that makes me a Bone Wannabe!
Shoot straight out of state!!! :hello: Looking forward to more tales of tails!
-
Beatutiful buck and great job, enjoyed the post for sure. Good luck in Idaho.
-
STUD. that fits the bill for you and the buck good job and good luck. J
-
Way to go Doug!!! Congrats to you!! You definately got one of them good old boys you were after. Just think he was probably in some nasty hole in the Sawtooths just hanging out a short time ago. Then he goes and walks his rear off hoping to poke a little fun and wham here comes Doug with his string and stick and sticks him!! :chuckle: Job well done and you earned this one and losing a little weight along the way never hurts. This just puts you in shape for Idaho and Montana. Best of luck!!
-
Nice buck Doug, Love the Roman nose
-
congrats doug, on a great old buck. you should be proud of yourself...you did well.
JB

Didn't make it to Idaho this morning, some duties at home called. One must be helpful when your partner lets you have so much time afield. I'll take off at 2 in the morning. maybe make it in a day like last year. :)
I spotted him at about 400 yards or so and dug out the camera. I thought wow he isn't going to score well but he is one heck of a buck and I liked him. I put the camera down and left it and my pack behind and started making the crawl. the sage is pretty good sized here so I used it the best I could. I had two does and a small buck I guess and the big guy was watching him. He bedded right after I took the pic and was focused on the little guy. I got to within 30 and he stood and shook and started to walk towards the doe. I stood and drew. He stopped to look at me and I hit him in the boiler room. MY MISTAKE and I can't believe I am actually admitting this on an open forum. I shot the coyote the other day and put the arrow back in my quiver and forgot to sharpen it. Then in my focused state grabbed the same arrow. It did its job fine but didn't pass all the way through. I GOT LUCKY! He only went about 40 yards, stopped, and collapsed. He gushed a whole bunch of blood out of his mouth. I was like g thanks for the photo help friend.
-
I took this shot while playing yesterday morning looking for that big one to photo op. I wonder if there was a big buck at the end of the rainbow. I thought it was ironic that the fog cleared the day after I got my buck.

Here are a few more of the big one that will live another year. Assuming of course that one of those other Road hunting Alta fellows don't decide to climb that mountain. :)

I would love to score this buck. As a three point I bet he is still pushing 180. Maybe his sheds?????

-
That is one hell of a 3 point...wow... TALL and Massive.
I love that pic with his leg in the air... I'll be pirating that one buddy...
E
-
Great job on a good buck, Doug, you definately earned him.
That big 3 definately has a cool factor going, wow I'd like to see him in my sights.
-
I think If I would have seen him earlier, the Hawk might have been left behind on that one. My dedication only goes so far. ;) His mass just did something to me. I was awestruck watching him. There was a dink 4 point playning with his does, and he jsut flat didn't give a hoot. He knew he was literally the king of the mountain. My buck had a fresh chip in one of his antlers. Wonder if it was from this fellar? Mass is the ticket for a buck being killed in my book. Score honestly isn't that important, but mass really is. I would choose mass over width anyday. One reason I like to hunt the panhandle of Idaho. Tall basket bucks with mass are the norm.
Thanks Ridge. ALmost feel a relief to have notched that tag. Sound familiar at all. Glad we were both successful on great animals. I wonder how Rob is doing.
-
Bone- Correct me if I am wrong but that Big 3 looks fairly young. Amazing cuz he is gonna be one dandy. He already is a buck that would make any of us quiver. Awesome picture.
-
Congrats! Nothing better than killing an oldtimer!
-
I would guess him to be about 5.5 or 6.5. Doublelung might have a more accurate opinion. He has some breeding years left. I am talking about the big three by the way not mine. Mine was an oldtimer. I am guessing about 8.5 on him or later. Not much for teeth left and the sheer size of him was incredible.
The coyotes are going to go hungry this year. Better go put some out of their misery. First off the population is down, we have discussed that, but the deer that are left are VERY robust. Even the does. The fawns are as big as ever. Very healthy, even the twins. Not alot of weak ones left for the coyotes to bring down. There is alot of feed this year and the winterrange has alot to support few deer. A good recovery year for botht he range and the deer.
-
Wow that big 3 is a beautiful buck!
-
Doublelung might have a more accurate opinion. He has some breeding years left.
Nope, I'm strictly recreational from here on out.
Oh, the buck. I think Bone's right on, no way he's less than a 5 year old, could go as high a 8.
-
:chuckle:
-
OPINIONS ALL.... Do you think that big 3 pt will turn into a 4 or is this as good as he gets aside from some more mass, width and heighth?
-
Thats as good as he'll get...he "may" get some more character....but he wont get anymore massive or long and wont be a typ 4... He is COOOL!
E
-
He might pick up a sticker or something but he won't become a 4 IMO. I might disagree with Hornseeker a bit about mass. That will be his frame, he might redistribute a bit, but I think he might gain a little as he gets shorter. and I do agree...he is WAY COOL. I hope I find his sheds. I would like to measure him officially.
-
I agree... He is way cool. I love those big 3 points. Over the years hanlding hundreds of muledeer racks I think he will gain more mass and shorter tine length as/if he gets older. Still way cool buck.
-
So Doug I take it you are retiring that arrow and will put it on display when you get the old boy mounted? Did Ida get out this year and tromp around in the brush?
-
I have sharpened it. It is back in te quiver and I am going to use it in Idaho. I have a new magazine artical brewing in my mind. 3 bucks, and a Dawg, one Broadhead. Idabooner is being occupied by a new housemate. Mugs is keepin him pretty close to home.
-
I really want to put another arrow through something.....
-
That is an awesome buck Bone. Love the nose on that guy. Looks like you took the knida buck you were after. Congrats .
Sage
-
Thanks Sage
Well get out there Ernie. You live in the Deers "backyard".
-
Great looking buck and shooting it with a traditional bow makes it all that more impressive! Thankyou for the great updates and the excellent photo's!! Good luck on your future hunt's!!!
-
Thank you sir. Headed out in a couple hours. Here is a picture of the buck that got mine killed. I wonder if he appreciated me eliminating the competetion.

this is a misc pic of a buck that I would have to admit I didn't see at first. he is about 800 yards away. I spotted the Doe with the Zen Ray binos and was watching her when he he materialized.

Man I can't tell you how many times I've done that! Glass up a deer in the open and all your focus is on them then all the sudden another deer pops up thats been in your FOV for 5 minutes!!!

Got some Idaho bone yesterday. I'll see what I can do to scrape up with pics. Probably will take some time. Then photo safary today. I think you guys will like the results. ;)
-
Lets see the Pics Bone!
-
:chuckle:
I took 900 today. That ought to keep you guys entertained for a few. All in Raw. I need to go buy another $100 photocard. :) What I really liked was filling up my truck with gas that was like $1.80 per gallon. Hell, I might be able to swing my Montana hunt after all.

I hope so we are counting on some more great pics.

I'll start a thread on its own Bear. They are posted. Enjoy.
I hope so jae.

I was going to start another thread, but there are already so many Montana threads. As you guys might have heard or seen, I went 3 for 3 on deer tags this fall. Another buck fell to the Sapphire Hawk. Not much to the story. Thanks to the great directions of a friend (hornseeker), I basically drove to where I wanted to hunt. I had some issues with what was state and what was military and what was prvate, but the map he provided was awesome. I hunted all day and didn't see any animals. I was getting a bit depressed and then I spotted this guy with a dozen does. I stalked as close as I could and waited. He finally came at a doe that was within range and I nailed him. Season Over. 3 bucks and a dawg with one arrow. Sounds like a magazine article title. :)
Here is my montana buck 08.....

You need to get your own show on the Outdoor Channel. Looks like his horn might have broken in the velvet then healed. If you need a partner for your show let me know. ;)

Another great buck Bone. congratulations on your year.
-
GREAT job there DOUG! Let me know when you're coming over for some pics! I'm heading out tomorrow gonna try to find some big deer! Just got home from an OSU logger sports show this weekend and I'm home for a week! :IBCOOL:
Michael
-
Cool buck, 08 was definately a muley year for you.
-
Looks like that buck could use an extended release Cialis for that droopy bone.
Great season!
-
LOL Thanks guys. I did alot better with deet than elk. Had my elk standards set too high. I was a little disappointed that I didn't beat last years buck, but oh well. I probably could have if I put the time in over in MT, but I am so running out of vacation.
-
Hey Dougy...Nothing official yet, but they are talking about extending the elk season by 2 weeks...that would take it to December 14th! :0)
Nice buck... I'll have to get all them up on the web page...plus the other two... you'll be the Sapphire Muley Master...
-
Love the curly point good looking buck. Lets see that lucky arrow you keep hiding it from us!
-
Well done bone! another good buck. Congrats
-
I am still open for hire!! I will pack your camera gear till my feet bleed....Awsome stuff and great deer. P.S. I'm a master camp cook!! LOL
-

Nice buck Bone. I kept looking for the pic's of your Montana Buck. Didn't realize you posted it under this thread. Thought for a minute you had forgoten, lol.
Ohh and don't worry about taking the measurments on your salamander necked buck with that short Y. No harder than doing one with a long Y. I've used the short "Y" incision for 7 years and have only had to re order a form 1 time.
Than again if you are not use to using this method I guess it could be difficult but you are use to using a long "Y". You do a couple short "Y's" and it will be a heck of a lot easier.
-
It was jsut more difficult in the field with the saw I had, and not being used to doing it. I can see what you mean about getting used to it. Caping in the field, or tube skinning was just different than I am used to when cutting up or boneing my animal, keeping it clean, wrestling it around, etc. I was also worried about ruining my cape with my saw.
-

The short "Y" is more often used in the southern states where most people bring their deer out whole and are able to hang it up.
In country out here when your packing and trying to skin a critter out in a hole than the Long "Y" is the way to go. Less wrestling with the animal.
I short "Y" all the capes I can. It just makes for a lot less sewing.
-
I would agree. I can promise you one of these capes got long Y'd. I was short on light and didn't want to mess with it. I like the idea of not having that seam as that is one thing that is always apparant when doing the taxidermy. I have yet to have the perfect seem. They are fine, but still not having it has to be better. I'll keep working on it in future years. I am sure once I do it a couple times it won't be as hard, but having the deer laying down in the field versus hanging in the garage or sitting on a table or back of the truck are two different things. I also think that 100 pound whitetails versus 350 pound mountain deer are two different things as well.
-
RUT IS DONE....The dream season is over. As you might have seen in the 500 buck thread, I finished yesterday off with a bang.
The rut is off, just like a flip of a switch and the boys were back in their groups, no necks nothing on their mind but rest and relaxation after a month of YAHOO. I am sure there is some action somewhere, but not where I was at. We saw 5, count them as its a miracle 5 30 inch bucks. I haven't looked at the pics yet as the dream season is done. After having the entire month of November off, December sent me right back to work with NO VACATION LEFT. Even dipped into last years. I pray some of my photos turned out, and the extra dents and MANY miles logged on my truck were worth it for you.
I just hope to God, that 35 inch buck pic turned out freehand before he disappeared into the fog. There are monsters out there. Sure wish the fog wasn't so NASTY!!!
-
Thanks for the constant updates and pic's...It's been fun spending your month off with ya via the web site. It made the pain of not being able to hunting this year a little better. Congrats again on another successful year.
-
at least I posted when there was still blood dripping off my boots. Rob, if you ever read this you are killing us. LOL
-
as a side note, this was one of the bucks I was targetting on my hunt. Here are two of his sheds. Gotta love how similiar they are. i was dreaming of drawing this tag. Didn't see hm unless he turned into that giant two point. He was pushing it in age. Its not that this rack was fantastic, just had personal vested interest in it.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv47%2Fboneaddict%2Fsideby2.jpg&hash=309f214ba7d6fd73c2e389f895aab3c9a3552e97)
-
What ever it is that makes a buck special may vary but they can get under our skin. Once that happens, our course is set. Nice sheds!!
-
I need to go back and see if the main frame of that two dips. :chuckle:

MY OFFICIAL REVIEW OF THE ZEN RAY BINOS
I decided to go ahead and place it here since this is where the whole thing began. I recieved my Binos the night before I left for my hunt. As you guys know after reading this big thread, they were put to fine use in the nastiest conditions. I am very impressed with our Sponsor (ZenRay) ir Charles to allow us to do this. I am especially impressed with how confident he is in his product to allow me to test them. I told him I would be blunt and honest and folks know thats the way I am soooo.......he risked alot.
Here it is. I am comparing them in my mind with Nikons, Bushnell, and some Swarvskis I have used.
First of all...ergonomically or how comfortable they are around your neck, they rate a 10. As for ease of use or focus, another 10. they were very comfortable and easy to use. Now alot of the hunt I wore glasses. THESE WERE THE BEST binos I have ever used with glasses. I saw someone else mention this fact. Its 100% accurate. Weather resistance or waterproofness. I can honestly say that I hunted the worst conditions possible and I knwo for a fact my Bushnells wouldn't have made it. These things are TOUGH. Now the negatives. I was a little disappointed in how they worked in low light conditions. I had great success in their sharpness and clarity in normal conditions, but I had a little trouble in lowlight where I know the Nikons were a bit better. I am sure the 10x50 bushnells would have too, but they are also about 5 pounds heavier and BIGGER.......so That was my only downside to them. I very much enjoyed using them and am very much looking at purchasing a pair when Christmas is over. I was VERY HAPPY with them and if you have noted this thread and my 500 Bucks thread, you can tell I have had a busy month putting these Binos to the test.
Here are a couple of pics of them.

Thanks Charles for letting me use a pair of your Binos. If you ever want to use any of my photos of them or any of the success photos, let me know. I very much enjoyed the use of your product, and for their price, they are an excellent set of optics. I told you I would put the to the test and I did. "They" also saw alot of bone.

Another very nice buck Bone, way to go. Have you started the trophy room addition to your house yet, looks like you're going to need it ;)
-
Bone, thank you so much for the fantastic review. Those photos are awesome. I am especially impressed that you never forget to pay attention to your photo composition while out on your hunting trip. It will be great if I can get a few of them and put them on our website.
I am really pleased that the VISTA lives up to your expectation and "abuse". As an entry level offering that is designed to compete "low-mid" priced products ($160-$300), your review is an important testimony on the quality of the product. I will pass this feedback to our optical designers.
We will be coming up with two new models to complete our product line-up, ranging from mid-priced ZRS and high end ZEN with ED glass. I will let you and all fellow Hunt-Wa members know those details in the next few weeks.
Again, thanks and congratulations on your hunting success!
-
Fair and honest is what you got. Good bionos and I wouldn't hesitate suggesting folks to get them, especially for their price. You can either grab the pics off here or I can send full sized ones to you if you would rather have them, let me know. I'll go back and see if I have a field photo that isn't on here that might show them off more as well. Good glass. My neck and shoulders would have killed me carrying my bushnells around. They also would have fogged by the third day in the wet stuff. It really doesn't get any wetter than what I was in.
-
bone, thanks a lot for allowing me to grab a few pictures off this site.
-
OK guys. I got a prelim on this guy to see where he rates in the Cup. Want take any stabs at what you think he scores. We are assuming that the dropper will count as a g4 that was coming off the mainbeam and thus a normal point. You have seent he field photos so know wbout what to guess for spread. Fire away. Ill post the score sheet over in the cup thread after a day or so.

167 gross :dunno:
-
168 5/8 gross...
-
172 gross 8) Nice. I love how similar those sheds are that you posted by the way ;).
-
162 gross
-
Theres some good guessing going on. Any one else?
-
155 gross.
-
I'm probably way off but I'll say 173 gross
-
148?
-
161 3/8
-
170 1/2
-
last chance...will post after :EAT:
-
166 gross
-
I cant quite tell how wide he is but just guessing with the bent g4 i will say 162 gross. I think his net wont be that great depending on that g4. It is hard to tell.
-
158 5/8 gross
-
Elkstuffer nails it in the end. At least is the closest. 157 4/8 gross and 154 1/8 Net. First of all, I thought it was a solid 160 class buck, so I was a bit off myself. I think it was the mass and since mass doesn't count for anything........I'll get the score sheet up here or on the cup thread or both in a few.
-
Man i was way off :bash:
-
Me too :bash: :bash:. Bone what are the G2's? I thought about 18. Mass must have got me too. :dunno:
-
What did I win? Perhaps an all expence paid scouting trip with Bone? .......OK! I'll pay my own way. LOL
-
You win the respect of all your Huntwa companions, and my appreciation for participating. :)
-
Missed your ? slinger. Just a hair over 13 each. I think the mass made me think they were longer as well.
-
164 5/8" gross is my guess...
Good mass, great main beams, nice backs, if front forks were both big he'd be a 170" easy imho but with the crabbed front... :dunno:
Great buck I think I'm close!
-
Me too :bash: :bash:. Bone what are the G2's? I thought about 18. Mass must have got me too. :dunno:
i thought about 18" too...thats what got me
-
thats a sick looking drop tine man :o
-
Bone I think you need to re-measure. Those are longer than 13 :chuckle:
-
Dang...I was way off! Guessed like slinger and thought the g2's were longer then they were.
-
Man if I would have used 13 inches for G2's I would have come up with 158! Just goes to show how pictures can be difficult to score from. Good thing my career doesnt rely on it, I'd a been fired a along time ago :chuckle:
-
Its good practice though becasue they always look way bigger when they are on the animal chasing a doe through the brush in front of you. I am usually pretty close, but did think this one was going to be solid 160 net. I think those back forks. Not like I cared. When I was watching him I figured it was my first dropper buck. I didn't realize it was his tine.
-
Thanks for playing Michael, but you are a little late. I posted the answer up about 4 replies. ;) Still good practice if you didn't see it. Sounds like you had the same thoughts and was duped like the rest of us.
-
I'm goin gto mount both the Montana one and Washignton one for sure. Any ideas on what type of forms to use for either one that might show off the bones. I know it comes to personal preference, and that ultimately will be the deciding factor,, but what do you think might enhance the characteristis of both racks. It honestly doesn't matter in regard to where they are going as I have so many, but just what would enhance the bones on each. ALl input is appreciated. I hope that makes sense what I am asking. (upright versus tipped back, sneak versus upright.....left turn versus right) I will have to modify any form for th eWa buck as it has a short snout and very Roman nose.......
-
It seems like that is the hardest ? You never know how it will look with your buck . I just love big rack bucks ( like yours ) in the sneak . Congrats on an amazing year .
-
I suppose I should re-post the pics but they start on page 25 I think. I can't wiew pics at work so don't want to grab the wrong ones. Please let me know...
Thanks rougheye
-
Hard right trun to show off the bent G4 on the one
-
+1 on phools idea!!
-
I like that Idea too. I am thinking a semi sneak on that Wa buck with his big ole Roman nose tipped up smelling.
-
Here you go Doug
-
that would be pretty cool looking too! Where you gonna put all these mounts? HAHA
-
Where you gonna put all these mounts? HAHA
No kidding, he is going to have a stack of racks on the floor of his garage just like mine. :bash:
-
Thats perfect Rob. Exactly what I was thinking.... Charlie... Michelle....where can I find one just like that?
-
Mossback. I won't tell you how many I have just sitting ont he floor in the garage. I think I have 8 in the house and probably another dozen in the garage mounted. Then there is the stack not mounted. Bad thing is I started collecting moose as well, and they take up more space. LOL
-
MODIFY!!! Unless you want to use a change out muley head and graft it to a whitetail. I'll PM ya.
-
Looking forawrd to hearing from you Charlie. If in your experience there is another angle that might enhance that buck, feel free to let me know.
-
Thanks for the PM Charlie.
By the way, my hats off to ehomever draws this tag next year. The wolves are decimating the unit. I am not just being theatrical either. Where I normally see hundred to thousands of deer on the winterrange I counted 8 the other day. And...the snow doesn't lie. There are no tracks. I've yet to photgraph a buck in the unit since it has snowed. >:(
-
:puke:
-
Yeah the family was talking about the wolves over there when i visited for christmas......One guy saw the group comeover and take down the deer he was watching in no time at all......I think they said he saw 4 wolves :dunno: but it doesnt sound good.... :'( >:(
-
So, the wolves have been there how long now, and they've already decimated a herd?
-
Thanks for the PM Charlie.

you just gotta love the sounds of that.
my hunting buddies parents-in-law live right on the methow river and they have seen 3 wolves this winter already. 2 of which were less then a mile from thier house.
usually they have 30-60 deer a night coming in and out of thier yard (with about 10 achers) and this winter has been nonexistant to say the least.
to bad too. a few years back i use to hunt a small patch of public land across the highway from thier house and would see 100+ deer a day. alot of smaller 2pts and spikes and the occasional 3pt or 4pt. then i took one trip up there the season they had that big fires and nothing. and now the wolves take over.
LOVE IT!!! >:( >:( >:( >:(
-
Actually you could take this form, which I altered the position of the head up abit, and put the nose up a little more and use a flehming mouth piece.I have another mount on that from I told you about, let me find it and I will post .
-
Here is that other form I was telling you about.
-
Thanks for the PM Charlie.

This really is too bad. You guys should all go to www.nwhikers.net and tell them about the wolves and what they have done to the herds. They all seem to love them over there! >:( >:( >:( >:(
-
That last one looks awesome. I love that look. I don't care about the flem as much, but that angle. I got a great picture of a three point with that look without the plem. Wish I could find it.
-
Its all about the head back but nose up.
-
geeezz! I just love that big three!! I cant help but come and look at it every once in awhile :chuckle:
-
Bone, the suggestions about modifying the form is the way to go. The buck I shot in 2007, I believe had the same length nose as the one you are dealing with. Taxidermist ordered the form based on cape size and then shortened the nose by taking a section out of the middle and then building back up the slope where the slope would vary, because of the section they had to remove altered the slope of the nose.
See this thread
http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,16004.0.html
By the way, I enjoyed the story immensely and congratulations to you in taking the buck with the bow.
-
Thanks Whacker. That was an awesome buck too. Upon suggestion I think I will end up using a whitetail form with a change out muley head. I am sure I will have to modify the nose as well. I have never seen one this short on this big of a deer and I really want that Roman nose to show. There are no forms even remotely close to his measurements. I'll keep you guys posted on here with the progress. I really like the pose of the buck huntnphool posted. I have a picture of one too that I wnat to dig out and gander at again. If I find it I'll post it.
-
Hey Bone, I was at Charlies last weekend and we discussed this pose in detail. I showed him one on his wall and pointed out the points that would need to be changed on the store bought ones. He assured me that he could do those types of mods. The main part I thought needed to be changed was the back of the neck. On all the mounts I have seen the noses are not high enough. The other thing I have noticed is they squint their eyes while doing this, all the mounts I have seen the eyes are almost wide open, not a natural pose :twocents: Hope the pics help you out ;)
-
Thats a great reference photo. THank you. I'm contemplating the phleming (sorry on sp) or not. Not sure I coul do it and if thats what I want or if I want the trailing. Phlembing would be more natural. Wish I was alot closer to Charlies as well. He's offered to help me out.
-
This was the guy I was thinking of. Phlembing would get me a better pose

Thank God I got drawn for this when I did as the WDFW has totally destroed it if what is proposed happens this year. The hunt could be open til the 25th of November. AND the tags went from 10 to 39, and not counting the other archery tags added. NO way should a hunt be going on during/through the peak of the rut. I have already taLked about the wolves, but htis could seriously take out half of the Methow Valley. May be fun if you draw this year, but fromhere ever after. GOODLUCK!
-
I though we wanted all the deer dead :dunno:
Maybe we can arrange a feeding station in twisp so people can shoot from the parking lot.
-
Just glad I am focusing someplace else now, but its def hard to keep up with these idiots.
-
I think we could rent spotters for evaluation of bucks in the parking lot and make a fortune...........even scoring of bucks after the fact for a fee $$$$ It would be great.
-
We can invite the tribe....I forgot they'll be busy in the Swakane
-
You should sell hunting maps on the highway next season :chuckle:
-
Might as well do something with my time...won't be any deer to photograph
-
Hell theres no deer along side the road that the Natives would be able to shoot. Remember they don't shoot does just bucks with big racks.
-
TRUE. Whst are your thoughts on these tag allocations proposals? You love this area as much as me and know it well. Am I overreacting to what these proposals could do?
-
Well you know how I would love to draw a tag for our favorite area. I can't see how they can justify increasing the buck tags there when the population is hurting. When you had 10 buck permits last year, 98 does between elderly and youth. Then this year you have 35 modern buck, 31 archery, 5 muzzleloader any deer how is that going to help the herd? Just like last year I will probably go with points only for deer as I would be willing to sacrifice my own personal needs for the herd growth. I hope that the herd builds back up so the 4 or 5 years down the road I can try to draw but I just don't see it. I would have rather seen them go the other way and even close it far a few years.
I will be writing the WDFW and voicing my concern. I will probably use examples of how I saw way fewer bucks and know of others (like yourself) who has also seen the decrease in population. I am suppose to hookup with the Scott Fitkin (Chelan area biologist) to do some volunteer work for the Master hunter recert in March/April time frame. You can bet I will voice my concern. What I also should do is take a drive over to Ellensberg on March 6th and 7th and speak my part. I myself am disgusted with the whole thing.

Thats basically where I am at. I don't see the herd bouncing back in this area particular with these tag allocations. I about had a hert attack when they had 25 big buck rut tags for the area. I thought they were doing well with 10 per mits.
-
yea then to throw that many into modern firearm. I know it has been a while when there was that many permits total let alone for one choice of weapon. :dunno:
-
Its insane
-
Thanks Chip. :con:
-
kind of hard to buy that he knows what he is talking about. New strategy by the WDFW to make people satisfied about their drawing system. open up enough tags in an area where there aren't any deer so the people THINK they are happyabout being drawn.
-
Id bet money we get a max point pool next year............Im guessing duche bag is sitting on max points for elk and wants his rifle elk rut tag in the blues but cant afford the gov tag and is tired of waiting..........
-
You are onto something there. >:( Holy *censored*
-
did you just get a PM..........might have sent it to the wrong person :o
-
I got it, and I'm willing to spread that rumor around too LOL :chuckle:
-
Thats how these games are played slash and burn get mine and who cares if hunting sucks after the fact.
Lets face it chip is around 50 and im sure he is pushing for a preference point deal so he can draw out sooner rather than later.. This is all about him and his own personal interests. Its not good for the herds or the average hunter.
-
Course that might be one of the nicer things I say about the guy in the next few months
-
You guys are on a witch hunt, we won't see a max point pool, the way the draw is set up it doesn't make sense. We may see a pool set aside for applicants with a certain number of points(i.e. 10 or more) but we won't see a max point pool. There are too many hunts where people with max hunts don't apply. Tell me how that would work. :twocents:

Does any of the current proposal make sense?
They would set 10% of the total permits aside for people with max points and a special draw would be conducted for them before the general draw......pretty easy. And the wildlife program told me they are overhauling the draw next year so just wait.
Apparentally everyone having a chance is not good enough for some people....

Its a shame to sacrifice quality bucks for tag quantity when the quantity of deer will be diminished. I would much rather see them kill some late permit areas than sacrifice the herd. I would sometime like to see their overall survey results for what drove these changes.

results for what drove these changes.

I hope you are right Ridge though I am about as skeptical as they come.

I would like to hear what Scott Fitkin has to say about this. My son drew a youth doe permit for the Alta unit last year. My family has been hunting there off and on since the 1950's, so I called him to see what was up with the herd and should we be actually taking a doe out of there? He said "sure". When I pressed him a bit more he did say that he had lowered the number of late season rifle tags down to 10 to help preserve the size of the herd. This is of course completely at odds with the proposals for this year.
I would be happier to keep the late season hunts quite limited and let that herd grow.
How about having deer hunters choose East or West like Elk?
Food for thought or discussion.......

At some point I wouldn't be surprised to see us go to an Oregon-style-hunt-only-when-you-get-drawn-system. What the current proposal looks like to me is one last 3 year "hurrah" then draw only for whatever survives after 2011.
Just a guess..

Yep. I'll bet you are right. And hold on to your wallet when you see the price of entry.

I would like to see how they can justify these numbers. First of all, I am not a cry baby about not being able to see deer, but you all have to realize that I have lived in and hunted or photographed this unit for...well 38 years, because basically I was with Idabooner in my diaper doing the same thing. THIS is the WORST I have ever seen this unit. Thats winter range, Spring shed season, and even hunting the rut. In a heartbeat I would say they should close this unit to hunting for a year. Throw the impact of an active wolf pack, I don't know what they are thinking.
-
I have been thinking about this for a few days. I am going to be a biologist one day, if this state ever gets their head out of their A$$. The only logical thing I can think of for opening a hurting unit up to so many permits, and open for all general seasons id THEY WANT TO STARVE THE WOLVES OUT OF WASHINGTON!!!!

I might be getting the green light for Sunday. I know where they are at. Might get some better pics of the little critters. Probably won't find any sheds, but maybe some skulls. They usually don't chew em up as bad as the cougars. :chuckle:
-
Good luck Bone!
-
I wonder if I should feel threatened around them with only one arm. ;)
-
I wimped out. Bonified Panzy I tell ya. I figured I usually end up buried in some snow bank and I bet its fun as hell chaining up with one hand :chuckle: Worked on taxes instead.....from one set of wolves to another. Maybe next week and hopefully the lens will be back. :IBCOOL: Then I can beat them off with something.....well guess I'd rather use my arm.
-
Got the official score on Montana.......I was off by a whopping 2/8 I guess. :)

Mine should be back any time Doug. Congrats, it looks as though they counted that as a G4 and not an abnormal, told ya ;) :tung:
