Title: NASP instructor training
Post by: STIKNSTRINGBOW on October 25, 2013, 09:57:04 AM
As an Archer for over 25 years, with 3 children, I thought it would be cool to start a course sharing archery with other kids.
I have been attempting to contact National Archery in the Schools and Washington State Archery Association to become a certified instructor, and my emails have not received any response.
Are there any instructors on this site ?
Would there be any interest by others in attending a course if one could be arranged ?
I am talking about here on the west side, as there was one in Spokane recently, but I was unable to afford the time/expense of a trip over.

Contact Ray Crisp with the WSAA, he may be out of town right now, but I know his wife is an instructor.

Yep.  This is your best starting point to getting certified on your side of the state.  I'm certified and coach in Clarkston.  We held an instructor training this summer, but, again, we're a long ways from you.  This program has proven itself over and over to the students and schools involved.  I highly recommend that anyone interested in the future of archery become certified and become involved at your local schools!

Linda Parker is the state coordinator, and she's been doing a bunch for the state-level, so I'm pretty sure she'll have an answer for you.  360-533-4698 and wa-archery@live.com is her contact info.

Holler at Annette on here I know she is a hunters ed version of archery instructor, feel bad cant think of the right name for it but she is an archery instructor for the state program equivalent to hunters ed.  I bet she has a few people to talk to.  Also if you want to work with school age kids call your local extension office and see about the 4H options in your area, we have rifle, shotgun, and archery 4H'ers over here.  good luck....

Well, I FINALLY got a response, only problem is the course is in Bellevue Jan 3-5th, and $120, being unemployed with my benefits ending on the 28th (damn Feds), all my money spent for the kids on Christmas, and going back to school (if I can afford to (Pell Grant covers school, but not bills) on the 2nd, the fuel to drive all the way to Bellevue 3 round trips is not within my reach..  :(
But,

We might also be able to teach a class in your local area, if you have a suitable location available - a gym and some class-room space with tables and chairs for paperwork and test.

We can provide all the equipment necessary to teach the class, but may need help with transporting it to a site (from its storage location in Olympia) as my vehicle isn't big enough to hold it all.
We really like about a month lead time to set up a course.

That gives us time to advertise it and get enough students, and to order and receive the training materials.

We have to look a ways ahead to find dates when us trainers are available. Particularly with the 3-day BAIT class, because my training partner works Mondays through Thursdays, so we can only teach the BAIT on a Friday-Sunday window.

If I could get at least 4 others interested in attending a course here in Chehalis, I would make a serious effort to arrange one.

The BAIT class is eligible for continuing education credits, and would certify you to teach new instructors.
Is there any members that would be interested ?

If I cannot afford to drive to Bellevue from Chehalis, Spangle(?) and Republic are really out of the question...
BAI is only one day, and just certifies you, BAIT is 3 days (includes the BAI) no problem with room, as one reason for lack of classes is lack of interest.
I was hoping some of the members here would be interested, as the minimum is 4 attendees for BAIT.

Have you looked into NFAA certification? There are a few classes offered in the south end every once and a while. I've been trying to get a level 2 course going at CRB for a while.
Yes, even fewer, and seems to be more coach oriented than instructor.
Also, I was dreaming of offering courses at local school, NASP has all the curriculum etc..
Hard to believe I cannot come up with 3 others willing to take the course..  :dunno:

wasn't suggesting you go to Republic, just that Ed would be another contact for you to try. I would be interested in taking a class if you can get it set as I want to offer NASP at the center where I work.

Are you in the SW Wa? that would mean I would only need 2 more...
The contact I got seems convenient, as in Olympia, so that works...

nope, NE like GMU 113 but I don't care if I need to travel just as long as at some point in the near (hopefully) future I can offer archery to our home schooled kids and all the others from the neighboring 3-5 schools who frequent my establishment who get it at school but only for 1 semester. hoping to make it a twice-weekly all year long thing here.

I appreciate it, but If it were me I would sign up for one already scheduled near you, rather than wait for me to set one up.
If nobody else seems interested, it might not even happen.
I am still looking into somehow attending the one in Bellevue, just have no confidence, too many obstacles for me to overcome in the next couple weeks.
But I will get it done, someday...

I'm interested in the certification.  I live in Ferndale, could Bellingham to Mt Vernon be a class if I could get enough people together???  I also heard you have to use the NASP equipment is this true?  I want to set up shooting classes with Traditional equipment.  Will NASP still certify me?
Stiknstringbow, what do you know about this?

easiest way I've found for getting a certifying class scheduled is to get a local school that currently doesn't have it & pitch it to them & get in the class when they have it for their teachers. I will probably go to Republic myself but good luck to you guys

NASP is designed so that all students participating use the same equipment, the genesis bows.  This allows all students that participate to start on an equal footing and allows instructors to be able to teach without having to learn about different bows.

I did the class in Bellevue a couple years ago and don't recall having to pay for it though.   :dunno:

I bet WFWest would have kids that would want to do it, I had plenty sign up for rifle team when I was down there a long time ago.

Neat thing about NASP, curriculum 4th-12 grade, so that includes Olympic and Cascade, not to exclude Adna...
Why I am going to do this, probably should also talk to the guys at "The Lucky Shot"...

NASP certifies that you have been trained in SAFETY, and provides curriculum and access to equipment, but once certified I do not think they have a rule you MUST use their equipment...
In my research, NASP is accessible and active with WSAA, while USA Archery is partnered with NFAA, and has more of a "traditional" base. However finding instructor training with USA Archery in Washington State has been harder than with NASP, I have been attempting for over a year, with no responses... Now if I could afford to travel, USA would be a better route.
I actually am "on the hunt" for a level 3 coach/trainer to give me lvl. 1,2 training, but my emails get lost in cyberspace...

But, I will be attending at least the BAI course on Sunday, so if anybody else makes it, say hi !
