Secured permission to hunt 100 acres on Shaw Island. Its a mixture of forest, pasture & thick under brush. This is my son Tristan's first hunting season with a real gun. He is 10.
We hunted opening day and saw over a dozen deer. Couldnt get a shot off tho. Mostly walked around pushing the deer from their beds.
Came back up today for the weekend. Got camp set up and decided to try an afternoon hunt. On the drive in we saw a few ducks on the pond. He shot one. More to that in waterfowl.
Decided to try still hunt today. Walked up on a hill in between pastures. We were in place about 4:30. Had good views in 3 directions. My son was good the first hour, but then he antsy. Then not ten minutes later we had a small buck sneak within 7ft of us. Very cool experience as we just stared at each other. My son wasn't at the ready. Oh well. He did take a head shot as he tried sneaking out but missed.
We were looking to see if the buck would come back out when we saw a doe start feeding 180yds away. Too far of a shot for my son with the 20ga slug gun. We backed down off our hill and snuck around to close the distance. We were a out 50yds out when she must've got our scent. She ran a short distance and stopped perfectly broadside at 85yds. We had a big boulder to use as a rest. Told my son to use it and aim just behind the shoulder. BOOM! Hunched up. HIT. She ran in a big circle then to the fence line 100yds away. I could tell she had a bum leg but it wasn't a quick kill shot. (Funny thing happend here).. The highly trained specialty angus steer pointers went to work. All 4 stood at the fence stairing at her. I saw were she went but this was darn right funny.
We gave her 20 and went looking. She was bedded down trying to hide, one shot to the head finished her.
Fist bumps and high fives!!!
I'm feeling very proud.
These deer aren't huge but its a deer and will eat just fine.
The good field pics are on other camera. This was at truck after dragging her out. Yes he had hunter orange on.
Big thank you to h20hunter for loaning my son his 20ga slug gun.

Congrats to your son! I grew up hunting deer on Shaw and always had a good time. The deer aren't huge but it's meat on the table and a ton of fun.

very cool.. I have a buddy that drew that tag for a second deer but he did not do any of the homework to use it. Way to get it done.
