Title: Coyote help please!
Post by: scout/sniper on October 27, 2013, 07:51:08 AM
I am by no means a coyote hunter.
I live on the wet side in the woods of the 550.
There is a large pack that roams the area and I hear them every night.
My neighbors have livestock and have had losses.
I have tried calling and using an electronic caller with spinning tail but they won't come out of the woods.
Is there a method that they can't resist and will get them into the open?
Thank you in advance for your help.

There is no secret method. Even the professional callers use different calls or sequences every time they sit down. They base there technique on everything - ie location, time of year, time of day, how educated the coyotes are, wind, and I'm sure there is more. It sounds like your in a tough spot because the more you call, the smarter those coyotes get. They also depend on their nose which is by far and large a big part of why we can't get them to come in over here on the wet side. I couldn't tell you how many times out on the east side I have had coyotes sit on their rump and just stare in my direction 400yds 500yds and beyond. They hear me just fine and I would bet the dinner I offer them sounds just mighty tasty, but they smelled me. Game over. Hunting over here in the trees we probably have twice the coyotes as the east side of the state but we just can't see them. I really can't offer any advice other than to pay attention to the wind, pay attention to every little movement you see, be as sneaky as you can getting to the set, and don't be afraid to try different calls or sequences. I would highly recommend you try and find some coyote hunting seminars too. Good luck

You might have to bait them out.  A carcass works the best but they will even come to a pile of apples.  I use to get trimmings and heads from our slaughter truck guy, put them across the pasture where I could see them from the house and shoot away.  These dogs WILL NOT come in to calling anymore.

Bait pile, let them feed for a while, then hit them with coyote yipping sounds. They aren't big on sharing outside of a family group.

Go into the woods, with your shotgun.

Spotlight them at night....of course when there is no other hunting season in your area.

:yeah:  Wetside as Hell thick visible 10-30 yds forest isn't easy as eastern. Bagged some animals over fox caller and make sure wind smell doesn't spooky coyotes.  BEST THING you can do is bait in ur pasture and shoot thur from kitchen open window or upstair room window.

Thank you guys, going to bait and shoot from the house.
These dogs are tricky and spooky.
Thanks for the suggestions, I will even do the "go into the woods with a shotgun"
