Title: MT Elk, Thompson Falls area, any experience?
Post by: klikboom on October 28, 2013, 12:02:21 PM: I'm heading over for the first hunting trip to MT. I have a place to stay in Thompson falls that backs up to NF land. My plan was to walk out the back and look for elk in the mountains. Does anyone have any intel / tips for the area?

We started in Trout creek and Noxon area, ended up heading towards Thomas Falls but still never saw an elk other than the herds in the big fields down in the valley. There are elk there, I know that for a fact, but I'm not even sure we saw an elk track up in the hills. Moose and deer, a few turkeys, but elk were scarce.

Mind you, we were completely going in blind. Had a local guy whom I met fishing once and had invited me to come over sometime, we took him up on his offer and when we got there he mentioned he hadn't hunted in over 20 years...

Probably should've got a deer tag too but was trying to save some $$ when I saw the $800 sticker shock. Hopefully snow will come. Did you try asking about going after the elk in the fields?

Post by: grundy53 on October 29, 2013, 06:26:39 PM: Wish I could help. My grandma and uncle live in Thompson Falls but for some reason I've never hunted there. But always see a ton of animals there when I visit. I'm really starting to want to plan a hunt over there.

I was planning on just straight hiking out the back of the house through prospect creek and into the mountains. Are there much for ungated roads for getting back into the hills? I have a wolf tag also.... Shooting one of them would be better than an elk! HeAding over nov 8 for a week. Any tactics you can share? It's just myself that is hunting and I'm bringing a buddy to help pack meat if the occasion should arise.

Post by: 3nails on October 29, 2013, 07:01:59 PM: There are definitely elk in T-Falls but they are scattered through heavily timbered drainages. Pretty vast country. Glad you got an elk tag. :tup: You are going to wish you had a deer tag. :chuckle: Pm me and we'll discuss more.

Post by: klikboom on November 11, 2013, 08:51:50 AM: One day down, coulda shot a Muley if I had a tag. Saw 4 elk yesterday but the fog obscured them I couldn't tell if it was a bull or no. It was barking and cows were calling back, that was pretty cool. Definitely lots of hunter pressure, timber and brush are a lot thicker than I thought. I've found a number of elk carcasses deep in the thick, assume wolves?

Post by: klikboom on November 12, 2013, 08:21:49 AM: Yup wolves got this spike bull. Guess they didn't read the regs bunch of poachers!! Think this is enough to push the elk up and out of a well defined gulch? I went back to where I saw the elk previous day, spent all day there with no sign of them. Ravens led me to the spike. Would be nice to find one of those woofs. How old do you think the kill was? Didn't stink but there wasn't much left to stink.
