I am hoping I'll have the quality of deer and photos to put together another calendar. I guess we will see.
I went out yesterday for a sneak peek. The rut is about 25%. These bluebird skies are not helping. This was how I began my day. It was a good start.

Sure enough, different bucks. The skyline buck disappeared before light and I was looking for him behind the hill when I spotted these guys. I assumed it was the same buck. :bash: I should have pursued a little harder. I didn't want to bump them, so I let them be.

This guy was rutting full bore. The girls were all spooked up. THey didn't like me one bit. He never looked at me so could care less. I usually see a little buck right here, so I was excited to see him. Piss poor genetics probably, but a nice solid buck

I have wanted to do that. I am intimidated by all of the private land, timber company and the different passes you have to have etc. Its just a whole different world than I am used to. I live out of my truck for several weeks with all of my gear, sleeping under trees and stuff, no camp except at Idabooners when I am in that neck of the woods. All of the methheads and stuff, its just a different world. Not to mention, photography in the rain sucks.Actually a few areas that don't need passes (yet) on the westside--a few wilderness areas, lots of regular USFS land and the more remote tree farms. The farther from any town you get it seems the less you deal with the tweeker issue.

Tag...Straight Camera....400mm lens. I used a 2x and the 1.5 on the rutting 3 at the end. The mirage (heat rising) was so bad it kept going out of focus. I finally just worked my way closer, but the doe spooked and then the herd, and where they went I wasn't going.
But are you using a digiscope set up or straight digital SLR?

Recap on the stats so far, or things that stand out to me. Out of 50 muley bucks, I have seen ONE Spike. That seems like good stats and with all the talk about APRs, this is the biggest Two point I have seen. I don't think he is fully matured yet. I so far haven't noted a problem with Three point or better regs. :dunno:

I was confessing to Jackelope the other day how I was contemplating getting one of these trailcameras as There is a spot I always see a big buck and thought it would be cool to catch what goes through. I get there and there is a two inch thick, 6 foot tall tree totally obliterated and snapped off. Right where I would have pointed the camera. This rub was over the hill 100 feet and appeared the next day. Man I hope I catch this buck

Things have stalled out. The Mrs is really sick and I have spent the last three days at home taking care of her. I didn't feel right leaving for the woods this morning. I'll get some pics up soon. The * denotes a mature buck. Most of the 4x4s I have been seeing are 3.5 year old bucks. Somewhere in the 4.5 to 5.5 year range they get a *. The first migrators showed up on the 4th. including the legend. He was 10 feet from where I saw him last year.

This young buck has the potential to be a nice buck. Do you figure he is 2.5? He is pretty short and has a young looking face.

The rut is waning. I was going to post that in the last count, but I hadn't convinced myself of that yet. Yesterday I photo'd a couple almost "bachelor groups", that were with a couple does but not really interested and not competeing. One had 7 bucks. Then on the flip side, I had one with 9 bucks, and they were still interested in one doe. That's also sort of a sign. The big boys are also down a lot (getting tired). If they don't have a nose in a tail they are on the ground either next to the doe (midday) or close by. There are also large groups of does that aren't being covered. Bucks will show up, check them out and move on. I don't think I am going to hit 500. Too much family time. I am home for a couple days with a daughters birthday and soccer, then switching gears and going whitetail. I usually don't spot near the number of whitetails. Yesterday was almost slow again. I got a big one right at first light, then nothing for a long time, then the fog came in. DANG IT! I got right on top of a 5x4, but only got fog pics at close range. Talk about longbow range. I could have speared him with the arrow without the bow. I finally went in the low country and my numbers jumped as I spotted and worked the groups I mentioned. Right at sunset I got in on a buck and should have gotten some good light pics on him. I spotted a bigger one bedded on the hill in the rocks but didn't think I could get to him in time if at all. He was watching me at over a mile away. That's not usually a good sign. :)

I got some good shots of the long tined whitey yesterday. While I was watching him a doe came flying by. Sure enough a little buck followed. I got to enjoy that interaction. The bigger buck knew I was there but I decided to smack some bones together. That fired him up. He didn't come to me but it amped his aggression up. Then another buck showed up. All fun to watch.

I was thinking 19-21 on the ears. The last six bucks I've had hands on (five were very mature bucks), ears were 18-22". That's a 20" average. His ears are not straight out, they're up. That said, my guess is just nearly that... You're breaking down the photo on a graph. Splendid! But I would say now from that frontal view that he's easily 30", and could really stretch to 35".
But that is my unscientific opinion. That is a fine specimen and great digital capture. :tup:

I would have only had once chance at him, he bedded on the other side of a little knob, I could have possibly got on him by coming over it, though he was with about 8 doe and that can be tricky in that dang 8 foot sage. I didn't want to push him to his death, as there were tag holders everywhere. I figured he can just live out his life in hiding. I tried the next afternoon after spotting him, and I couldn't get within 500 yards of him. He'd been shot at before.

Not sure I will make it out or not to close out the 500 for the month. Photo taking stinks unless you get above the inversion. Stayed local and logged a Christmas tree. Few hunters out but not many. I think they are discouraged. Saw more animals than I thought I would.

It was fun watching the entire rut unfold from start to finish. I had a larger comprehensive view of it this year, and hope to utilize that in the future with photography. There are definitely stages and timeing is important, and how the weather interpheres with that. Then how age structure fits in this cycle of timing. It was also good to see some interaction between species.

I really wanted to get over there in November. A faulted component in my truck killed my play budget though. One of these times I'd like to 'tag' along in some of your late season haunts Doug. Funny how I recall one of your posts when you were watching a big boy and didn't dare get any closer else you might push him to his death; to late season tag holders in the area. Wise and unselfish. That earns respect from a lot of us. -We all know you wanted a good shot of that buck but you let it go. I have enjoyed your photos since you started posting them. This thread has been nothing less than repetition of your great hunting and photography talents. Nice job!

And in hunting deer, we rarely get to study and take close looks at their faces. This thread allowed a guy to really look at how unique bucks are, not just in antler configuration, but in every aspect.

I would guess 25-30 yards would be a good goal for a nice full shot. Its usually about the distance I like with the longbow, so its usually good practice. You can use a 2x extender and reach out further, but you lose quality of the photo, and of course you can crop, but that also loses quality.

Bone, you say the Alta unit. I spent over 30 years hunting up the Twisp River from Elbow Coulee all the to Copper Pass and Twisp Pass. Some incredible country way back in there along with some great bucks. We could always find places to hunt all day and never see another hunter. Last year may be my last up there as I think the wolves have real taken a toll on the deer herd. If I'm not mistaken, it is Gardner Unit on north side of the road and Alta on the south. Always fun to remember the good ole days :)

There is a forkie in the unit I hunt just like this…without the eye guards though…I bet he is 5-7 years old. I see him almost every year. He knows he is safe. He has a sway back, and is getting a gray muzzle. Just a huge buck, but only a two point, and a bruiser. Slick as snot in between though, not even any trash that can be considered an inch long…I have been 20 yards from him, standing broadside, and he kind of laughs at me. I would love to have him, but I digress...

Its going to be an interesting fall. I've been reeling from the depression of what its going to be like. A huge percentage of these shots came from areas that are now Black and look more like the moon than deer country.

Although a lot of winter range was damaged/destroyed, there are pockets of green. Pockets of surviving browse. Will they eat it all then die of starvation? Will they eat and roam for more? I'm hoping for the latter, but that will have them competing with other deer that have returned to their pocket of winter range. It will be interesting to see how WDFW reacts with a feeding program and how the wolves harness the opportunity for easy pickins as many more deer will be on smaller winter range.

That's my goal this November. I am hitting the deer woods and want to see 500 bucks and get as many of them on film that I can, or that are worthy. I'll also possibly post stats to what I am seeing. I've contemplated a Montana and Oregon trip in there as well, but doubt they will come to fruition. I plan on checking out a couple new areas that I don't generally focus on, trying to move with the deer. Hopefully that doesn't skew my count too much.What does (dial up beware) mean?
I am hoping I'll have the quality of deer and photos to put together another calendar. I guess we will see.
I went out yesterday for a sneak peek. The rut is about 25%. These bluebird skies are not helping. This was how I began my day. It was a good start.

'Dial up Beware'... Not everyone has high speed internet. There are still pockets of telephone modem internet access that is much slower than DSL or Cable internet connections. The photos in a thread like this will load very slowly on dial up.gotcha thanks, think I'm a bit slow too
