We are heading out in the morning for day #1 cant wait, I have been seing some shooters so hopefully the fog is not a prob. I got my wifes late tag starting tomorrow and then An acquaintance has the govener tag so hopefully I get to join them again here in a month!!!!!Good luck, I'll be heading over in a week.

Friday the opener was warm and calm, and we saw very little activity, high and low. The front moved in on Saturday, and we started the day with a 130's class buck rutting up a small group of does way down low. Good sign. Battled the fog and saw deer here and there, not a ton, presumably mostly residents. We glassed and worked our way up high, and hit fresh snow at about 5,000 feet. It was snowy and blowing sideways, made it really tough to glass. On the way to the top, we hardly saw any tracks in the snow - discouraging, as I figured that snow would get them moving downhill. But on the way back down a while later, we started seeing a lot more activity, including one 140's class buck trotting straight down the mountain. No does in sight, looked like he just wanted out of the nasty weather.
At the end of the day we worked our way back to the bottom. As luck would have it, way down low, we had a doe walk out of the hill crease above us...then another doe, then another, then a big buck...good mass, dark horns, and deep forks, and that did the trick!

Agreed. Also tough to tag out after two days, but that dilemma is part of the fun! I had a late tag last year, and learned that seeing big bucks in that country and getting a good shot at them can be two completely different things.
I think he'll post up a longer story and more pics.

I'll have to post a couple more from the camera which are even better when I can write more details about the hunt. It keeps amazing me that in the pictures with the whole deer the rack looks small but when you look at the rack alone it is still freakin' sweet and tall.
Considering I spent 3 days in 245 during modern with some other friends in65+ weather, even up high, without seeing much sign or action, and nearly the same story on Friday in 247 checking many nooks and crannies from top to bottom, this opportunity was too good to pass up. I was prepared to come back and hunt more later in the hunt once the rut was hitting harder and more weather had set in, but this buck and situation was just too good to pass up. Very happy to have this buck and to have put a good shot on him.

Counting the days before I leave for my desert archery tag. It's like waiting for Christmas as a 9 year old again. I even built a paper chain to remove a link from everyday for my count down. Not really but I thought about it. The wife told me it's a one in eight-ten year thing so I don't even have to come back for Turkey day. I'll be leaving on the 23rd hunt starts the 25th. I will be there hunting for at least the first seven days after that my wife and boss at work said we can play it by ear. :tup:Man ...I hope you come up with a nice one ... that would be a fun tag to have :tup: :tup:

Saw lots of 3 pts, saw one stud 28 ' 4x4 on private land, best deer of the trip, could not hold out and shot this 4x4 with eye guards and got a chocolate bear bonus as well.I must have seen the same stud 4x4 you saw, the best one I seen. I shot a 3x3 with eye guards the last day I could be there and y sister got a very nice first buck.....3x4 with eye guards about 26 inches wide. Saw a lot of 3x3s as well and some big 2x2s and a blonde buck. Great job on the beautiful bonus bear!

My sons late Alta muzzy buck. I already posted this picture in the muzzleload section but I wanted to post it on this thread. I haven't seen any other Alta late bucks posted anywhere, rifle or muzzleload. Just wondering how the other hunters faired. We didn't see very many good bucks, maybe the weather was to nice or the rut was over. My son was very happy to get this one.Wow! That is a heavy antlered buck! Do you have a side view? My guess is the Alta permit hunters didn't fair as well as they used to. Damn shame the population and quality has gone so far south.Cant be true, why else would they increase those permits unless population and quality have increased as well?

I'm glad I didn't draw for the swakane or entiat this year with no snow to bring down the migration bucks.There were some toads taken out of those two units this year by permit hunters.

The lack of snow made for some average bucks being harvested in areas that would normally produce Hogs, that should make
the 2014 season that much better, unless Bigfoot eats em all.
Well, when do the natives have to quit hunting? That's the unknown variable in the equation.
