Looking good.
-
First set of the year. Check!

How's a guillotine door supposed to work when the world is turned on it's side? :chuckle:
-
Nice start Korr!
Felt kind of weird setting traps in 65 degree weather.
-
How's a guillotine door supposed to work when the world is turned on it's side? :chuckle:
Yeah I don't know how that happened?
Indeed it did carp.
-
So I've had two filleted dollie vardon scraps sitting in a jar since August, I melted down some petroleum jelly and blended them together. What do you think? Good lure or no? The kids just about lost dinner when the smell drifted into the house through an opened window. You can just imagine the response I got from the wife.
-
petroleum jelly tends to encapsulate odor requiring re luring more frequently, but does offer a waterproofing factor......
-
Got my first two swim throughs completed and 8 more rat traps built. I tried to set my whole hole line Saturday and after four hours in the swamp I just wound up getting myself stuck in the muck I didn't set a single trap and then high centered my truck on a sand bar. P.s. just because the beavers were there last march doesn't mean they are there now. What a day I tell ya! Maybe this weekend I will get them in the water.
-
So today after work I got my two swim throughs set out. I got one set in a channel between two ponds and the other on land not to thrilled about the one on land I'm worried if I do get a beaver in it that it may just chew its way out. The one on lnd is set on a well and recently used trail from the water up to a small maple tree they've been working on and the other is set in the same spot I got that little guy last year, like I said its in a run between two of the many ponds just below a damn crossing. Sorry no pics of the sets beings it was dark when I set them.
-
So one rat and I had eager beaver trap eater but he left me a present then chewed himself out. Here's some pics.

Trap
-
The one on dry land I take it. We learn from our mistakes.
-
Two more today and one was in my new swim through that I set last night.

#4

-
Check out who made the fatal mistake of swimming into my trap last night!
-
That otter is 42" long with the hide on from tip of nose to tip of tail.
-
Two more rats today!
-
Tools have arrived! I love this, when I was a kid I got to run around a few times with my shop teacher on his trap line. He taught us a bit about fleshing and stretching furs right there in the wood shop. After the ban of body grippers I thought trapping had basically died until I found this forum and realized you guys were still going and doing very well with the cage traps and seeing everyone's success inspired me to give it a go and I'm glad i did, keeps me busy all winter. Any how got lots to learn yet, but a heres a pic of the muskrats on the stretchers. Feel free to criticize if you see something I need to do differently. I'm gonna order a DVD on fur processing soon until then y'all can expect plenty more questions from the rookie.
-
good Job !
-
Nothing really wrong but on the wire stretchers a lot of guys put clothes pins on the sides at the legs to hold the sides down. It can gain you a size which puts a few extra bucks in your pocket.

I agree. If you look at the first pic I posted under the thread "the fur shed" you will see what humptulips is talking about.
-
In my opinion , 'rats look and feel much better if their put up on wood. I use bass wood stretchers that I bought from Blue Ridge trapping supply.
-
I plan on going to all wood stretchers and clothes pins in due time. Thanks for all the tips guys muchly appreciated.
-
Great going Korr!
-
Got my first three cats sets out today! Sorry no pics to show at this time.
-
First beaver of the year! 40lbs even.
-
Here's another pic of it in the trap.
-
Awesome, congrats!!!
-
Now ya got some good bobcat bait with that beaver carcass, nice catch.
-
Good one!
-
Nice work Korr
-
So yesterday checking my water line I noticed a new spot that finally thawed out a little. So I went to check it out and about twenty feet from the waters edge I noticed a hole roughly 8" in diameter with otter tracks going in and out all over the place so I went to the waters edge to find any submerged entrances. I found two and started poking around with my stick to check water depth and if it was a big enough run to set one of my swim throughs in, while poking around I heard something inside and immediately looked to the whole on land and wouldn't ya know it an otter come shooting out of that 8" hole and made a mad dash for the water, he dove into the water not more then three feet from one of my traps. Even if he had dove into my trap I suppose he'd of gone clean through it as fast as he was moving. Pretty cool experience though.
-
Great thread. Thanks for sharing.
-
Not a real good pic but this is otter #2!
-
-
 Cool
-
Here's beaver number 2 and muskrat number 7!
-
This little guy makes four beaver so far this year. On the last two checks I've had one trap tripped with nothing in it. It must be a big boy, well that's my story any way and I'm sticking to it!lol.
-
Awesome!
-
Congrats. I enjoy following the trapping threads.
-
Well yet again today had a trap that was tripped with nothing in it. However it was not the one that has been getting hit and runs but rather my top producer this trap alone in the same location has produced 1-muskrat, 2-beaver and an otter and today tripped and empty. Im contributing the problem to the 16" double doors folding in to the trap, minimizing the empty space between doors. My steel order finally showed up so I'm gonna get started on building a few more swim throughs but the doors will be hinged on the sides which will give an additional 8" inside the trap. Once I get a plan drawn up I will make them so the doors swing from the outside to the inside.
-
So yesterday me and a friend ran my lines only to find that I had two cat set tripped and three water traps tripped. :dunno: I decided I wanted to scout out some new area that I spotted on google turned out to be full of beaver and otter sign. It's quite a pack in so we each grabbed one swim through a piece and got them set out. Cool thing was is I was working the bank in about waist deep water when I spotted something sticking out of the bank. This Is what I dug up. They've definetly been there a while. I cleaned most the rust off of them.
-
Cool find Hardcore  About how far of walk in was it? I've got a spot I found on Google earth I want to check out also. It would be a pretty good bike ride.
-
It's about thirty minutes walk in to the first trap with a very steep hill climb on the way out. And then you get to walk across a couple pretty big beaver dams that have pretty swift water running over them. So as I said before I only have two traps out there and I plan on pulling them after a week whether they produce or not.
-
Well today makes beaver #5 and the biggest yet at 47lbs.
-
Here's another pic.
-
Korr, I would take a knife and rough skin those beaver out at the ponds then I only have to carry the hide and castors out. I have packed out 3 40lb beaver out over a mile in my pack basket so I know of what I speak.
-
I would but I use the carcasses for bait .
-
I would like to get into trapping I think it would be fun.

It's a blast. But I gotta warn ya, once you start you won't be able to stop if I had to choose one sport it would be trapping hands down.
-
Nice beaver Kor  Did you get that in the place that's a pretty good hike?
-
Sure did. Made the push all worth it. I only had two sets out there this guy came from one and the other was tripped with nothing in it. So needless to say I just reset them both where they were and will start building a couple more traps tomorrow and get them out there as well.
-
Cool! I was wandering if you would actually pull them whether successful or not. I would and will do the same. This weekend were heading out to a spot, 2 miles out on our Mtn bikes.
-
Right on well good luck to ya turner looks like you've done well in such short notice can't to see what your final pull is. Have you got your hands on Any beaver traps yet?
-
No not yet. I'm hoping to get just one before to long, so I can get the hang of it a little before season ends. This summer when we have more daylight, I'll try to get a bunch built. I haven't had this much fun in awhile. Kicking myself for not doing this sooner.
-
I know what ya mean after they band body grippers I thought it was done until I came across this site and found out guys were still very productive using cage traps. I kinda enjoy the challenge of cage traps anybody could go out and set body grippers and be successful but it takes some serious work and ingenuity to make cage traps work. I know most folks say coyotes are a thing of the past but I've got a few Ideas up my sleeve that im gonna give a try next year.
-
Hey Korr, Next time time you build another beaver set, Care to take some photos and give us a rough how to on how to build them? Looked like they were gravity doors?
I just built 8 colony traps for muskrat 6x6x24 and Havent had a chance to set any out yet but Im gonna soon, Just gotta find some good spots.
-
Sure smossy I will will try to set up a few pics on how to. In my first year yes I built gravity single door guiliteen style doors but now I'm only building swim throughs with spring powered doors and those are all I've caught everything in this year is the sw throughs.
-

-
Awesome site . building a new trap right now.
-
I tried to upload a video but don't know how. Tomorrow I will work on some step by step how build and a video on the finished project.
-
Here's a pic of one swim through I built today. That can be set up laying down for beaver or they can be set standing up for bob cat, it can also be set using only one door.
-
This is one of the doors before wrapping it with 14guage 1"x2" wire mesh. The deminsions of the trap are 18"x12"x48".
-
Here is a pic of the spring powered doors.
-
And here is the conibear trigger and dog.
-
Thanks Korr. Where do you buy the connibear dogs, and trigger? I'm keeping my eye's open for a cheap welder. What kind of welder do you have?
-
I order the triggers, dogs, springs and j-clips through f&t trading post. I just run a little easy mig 100 that I picked up at the pawn shop for $120.
-
That's great! How much you figure you have into that one trap $ wise?
-
Maybe $35.
-
This is a pic of that weasel box its 8"x8"x somewheres around 12" it has two 2" holes in the front and back the one in the back has 1/2"x1/2" wire mesh tacked in. The lid is hinged in the back and has a screen door latch in the front. Simply bait it and place a standard rat trap inside. I put a wooden wedge under the springs to give a little smackin power.
-
Sorry forgot the pic.

What is the bet way to get started in trapping? Best traps? Stuff like that.

I'm biased for sure but I think the best way is to join WSTA and make it too the Rendezvous. You can look at different traps and talk to the guys that have used them. Good demos and people willing to share what works.

Hey bruce. Know any places that have blueprints on how to build various traps? I dont really feel like paying $90+ for for beaver/bobcat traps when I can build them myself.
Any other websites that carry supplies other then http://www.fntpost.com/cart.php (http://www.fntpost.com/) and advanced traps (waaay overpriced)
-
Yes I still need to join the wsta and can't wait to make it out to a rendezvous.

I don't know anyplace that sells blueprints. Most guys start out buying a trap and then copying it or at least incorporating the design into a trap sized to suit them.
I know cage traps like Advanced Traps or Comstocks seem high priced but if you consider the labor that goes into them they are not. Just from my own experience I can tell you it is a lot of work to turn out a few traps.
I'm not saying there is anything wrong with makeing your own but you will come to appreciate the time involved.
I buy my supplies from http://www.minntrapprod.com/ (http://www.minntrapprod.com/) Lots of other supply dealers around the country but not many have much to choose from as far as cage traps. It's kind of new and not needed in most of the country so you won't see much in the way of newer inovative traps like swim throughs or even good cat traps. A lot of the best cages are being sold by their makers and it is kind of word of mouth advertising.

I get what your saying, I guess the first year out Ill be forking out the most cash for what I need to get started, I think I stand around $200 so far for basic muskrat/mink supplies between fleshing boards, tools/knives, stretching boards/wire stretchers, and supplies to make colony traps.
Thanks for the post Ill check them out and see what I can find.

Best Bait for Mink and Muskrat. Paste Bait for pocket, Pipe and Bank sets. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8b_TW-GGb4#ws)

So I added a short video to YouTube titled "home made swimthrough cage trap" but don't know how to upload it onto here. It's just a short clip of me setting it to show the speed of the doors.
-
Paste the URL from the you tube page into a post.

I can't let my wife see this, but I have spent $1100 in the past 8 weeks re-acquiring all my trapping gear. Finally got everything I need (want). Eventually I'll want a few more 220s and a few more 330s, but I have all new #5 Bridger Dbl Longsprings, #5 Bridger Coilsprings, a bunch of Victor #3 Dbl Longsprings, a bunch of 1.5 coilsprings, 110s, 120s, 220s and 330s.

What are the 100' series? Trap sizes?
-
110 conibears are single spring 5 inch by 5 inch, the 120s are the same size but double springs like their big brother the 330s. Used for rats and mink.

My first bobcat, big female.
-
Here's another pic. I can't seem to figure out how to post more then one pic at a time?
-
good job !
-
Congrats!
-
Nice work! We picked up a female today with a good belly! Love those bobcats. Congrats.
-
nice cat. should have let her go for bredding purposes. just kidding congrats
-
That was awesome. I've gotten so used to having traps tripped with nothing in them that I seen the door down and just new it was empty so I scooted right up to it and just about did a back flip when she jumped and growled at me. What an amazing experience.
-

We might have been a little excited!
-
I think you were a little too close and casual to the front of that cage! :chuckle:
-
Congrats  Pretty cool Korr.
-

Ah come on its just a little kitty cat.
-
NICE!!!!
-
Muskrat #8 today in one of my beaver traps.
-
All five mini trappers came all the way in with me.
-
Well turns out I can't tell the difference between a Tom and female bobcat. That big female magically turned into a 22lb Tom. Lol.
-
Bobcat #2 27lb Tom in the same exact set as the last one!

Nice cat!!!!

Ya probly should have waited til after the smokes got put out before making the video.
-
Oh the camera guy had a cig? I thought there was a fire somewhere, was totally confused. How much did that cat weigh?
-
27lbs on the money.
-
 Awesome
-
My first marten! This guy had been tripping one of my new bobcat traps everyday for a week so I moved in a smaller trap and caught this dude overnight!
-
26" tip to tip
-
Oh it must've been nice back in the day!
-
That last photo is why trapping in WA sucks. But better to cage trap than not trap at all. Congrats on the Marten!!
-
Here's a better pic of that marten now that it's all dried out.
-
What size trap did you get that marten in?
-
Nice job Jesse. You're having a good year.
-
The trap was a 5"x5"x16" single door. Just set it right next to the cat trap and baited it with canned salmon and the very next morning there he was.
-
So today I caught my first civet cat in a coon sized cage trap. Let me tell ya there's definetly a learning curve to be had in that department. But my buddy his dog and I walked away unscaved and didn't have to shoot it either I will put up a pic when it dries out a bit.
