Title: Washington Whitetail Rut Report 2013
Post by: DBHAWTHORNE on November 03, 2013, 06:11:41 PM
It's that time of year again. What kind of rut activity are your seeing from the whitetails?

This weekend I saw a ton of new scrapes and rubs that weren't there last week. I did have one mature buck that appeared to be cruising (assuming by the distance he covered) but no does were followed by bucks (except for the Mulies...I have tons of pics with them after does).

Hey DB do you leave any stands year round?

You use hang on or climbers?

This topic is in my head lately. I'm about to partake in my 1st whitetail hunt during the rut out west. Can't wait.

I never leave stands...can't afford to have them stolen... and the weather is rough on them after a few years.

I use hang on's but not opposed to climbers...climbers are generally more comfortable for all day sits... and some of my hang-on stands suck for all day sits.

They have been hung since the early season.

I wouldn't be opposed to leaving one August - December but no longer... I don't understand leaving the climbing stand... I would be way too worried it would be taken if left that long (on public land anyway)

LOL. I'm a transplant from the east coast. Moved west to western Washington. Going east to hunt out west. That makes sense, no? Joke...I've not hunted whitetails in the rut since I lived back east.

Definitely seen a few fresh rubs in the last week in 113. They're getting close, this recent snow and cold temps should really get them going by start of late season! Like you said DB the muleys are already chasing.

In all honesty, my family lives in the Curlew area and we own hunting property, but I am on the Wetside now.  I was raised in Kennewick.  Can not pass up my friends ranch near Springdale.  Nice and cozy cabin to hunt out of.   :IBCOOL:

I left two up last year and the dang squirrels ate the foam seat in the one that had it.   >:(

A friend in WI almost hit a big buck this morning chasing a doe.  Don't know if that helps much though.   ;)

I need to tag this as my son has the late WT tag for the chewuch unit (not the best WT unit I know),  having never hunted WT's before what signs should we look for in a rutting WT buck in the area? we have until the 20 and plan on hunting this weekend and the last 6 days of the season if needed. Sorry don't mean to hijack the thread.

I checked some of my cams yesterday. found a couple fresh rubs and one scrape just starting. All of my mature deer are still in their nighttime patterns but hopefully that will change soon. I also hunt in Michigan and my dad had bucks bumping does and grunting, he said its just starting out there but no full blown chasing yet. I am going back to michigan this week and will be hunting for 12 days so i hope it turns on out there and waits for me to get back here for late archery.

on the tenth when i got my buck (stevens county) i saw a couple diff does walking funny and bleating, saw one young  4x2 buck chase a doe.  saw multiple fawns without their moms present, then as another doe came out of a bunch of reprod i heard a bunch of thrashing around in there for a min, before my buck came out dogging the doe.  then yesterday saw another buck chasing a doe while i was driving down the highway.  id say its happening here for sure.

Just got back from my Dad's Sinlahekin WT hunt.  He tagged a 3x2 with eyeguards yesterday. Was all by himself, not rutted up at all.  Glands pretty clean.  Lots of WT's in the fields there in Loomis, three bucks that we saw. One decent one off on his own, one spike trying to keep up with it's mother, and one small 3 point that was trotting a doe around.  We only saw one other buck in the wildlife area, a small forkie that was with a doe.  I'd say it'll be heating up here in a week or so.

That's my knowledge to contribute.

I see that they are calling for snow in Colville tomorrow and Saturday. I am guessing the big boys will be kicking it into high gear in the next few days and really going the following week which is perfect for me! I can't wait to get into my stand and hopefully fling an arrow at a big ol swollen necked whitetail!

Just got back from 4 days in 101. The rut is definitely on. I saw nothing big, but I did want to give a shout out to this little guy. Saw him check his scrape at least 14 times in 4 days...very entertaining. I hope things work out for him. I didn't have the heart to put an arrow through him.

Watched a set of young 8pts do a bit of light hearted fighting tonight followed by a pair of much larger bucks just as I could no longer see detail through scope or binos even though its was still legal hours.  Dang old eyes suck.

Soon as it snows and there is some contrasting back ground........LOOK OUT !!!!!!!

I saw one with a huge neck trailing.  He was full bore rut.  Nice 5x5, didn't wait for a pic.  Two small ones not even interested and a nice one that was with a doe but not rutting her.  Its on the brink.

Here is a north idaho buck from this week..  He came in right after a doe.  Have not seen any actual chasing but have new deer cruising through the area.  Sorry for the crappy pic but he has a little bit of a neck going on.  I know the thread is wa but this buck is about 4 miles from the state line so it counts..

Rut is on like donkey kong - snowing pretty hard over 4k and dropping down lower.
bucks are following does as of this morning, things shaping up nice out there.

get off the roads and away from all the road hunters and rattle - give it a good 20 minutes of solid rattling

Just got home from Northern Idaho and it was dead. Lots of does and  no bucks trailing ( whiteys). I'm sure the storm coming will liven things up a bit. I heard 8" of white stuff in the lowlands.....wished I could have stayed.
On the other hand the mulies were still ruttin like crazy.

Kind of weird, just got home this evening, from SE WA.

I jumped 7 does last night without a buck near them. My brother shot a buck last night that was trying to round up a doe. Brothers buddy shot a buck last night that was on a does tail...
This morning i shot a buck that was chasing 2 does. But we saw a ton of does with no bucks in sight. I was jumping does on ridge tops that had no bucks in sight. But i would jump a buck at the bottom of the draws in the huckleberry brush all alone.

I don't really know whitetails but what i saw was early rut activity. They are still not rutting hard.

Checked trail cams yesterday for the first time in about a week.  Whitetail bucks with swollen necks but not one pic of buck and doe together.  All pics were either bucks only or does only.

Just wanted to thank this thread, my son had been bugging me all week to head over to the NE corner for late Whitetails, I didn't really feel like making the drive.  But after reading this thread I decided to go.  It was the right decision.  We shot two nice whitetails (see 2 for 2 on 5pt Whitetails), my sons had been rubbing, but it's neck wasn't swollen and he seemed to be ignoring the does that were close by.  Mine definitely was, his neck was swollen and I probably wouldn't of gotten him if a doe hadn't led him on a string right by me.

There's a foot of snow in higher elevations, nothing in the valley. We are seeing lots of rut activity and killing 1 to 3 bucks daily most of this week.

It seems the have been rutting heavy since the 15th or so. Today I saw a lot if buck movement.. And a lot if successful hunters. I hope those rifle hunters who haven't filled your tag can make it out for the last day. It should be good.

Seems sporadic.  50 degree temps and full moon isn't helping.   I have yet to see a super magnum with a beast neck.  Temps are supposed to dive Thursday.  That should do it. Rut is happening

Spent several hours on lower Mt. Spokane yesterday. Saw a decent amount of buck tracks in the snow, but they were mostly headed into the thick crap. Saw a couple does and they had nothing trailing them. I don't think it's fully kicked in up there yet.

I've heard Bio's say that deer will go through 2 or more ruts (nothing like the first one) but every 30 days or so, any deer that wasn't bred will go into heat again.

DB, if you saw Mulies rutting hard on the 27th of Oct, then PolarBears observations yesterday might be proof of a doe that didn't get bred.  :twocents:

Over the last few days of sitting all day around Spokane, it's been strange. Last week on Thursday/Friday I saw on camera the first round of all day buck movement. Saturday/Sunday back to normal. Monday through yesterday i've been in my stand all day and its tapered off. Hard to explain, but it seems the Bucks are on the feet, just not rutting hard... almost lax about chasing. Been seeing groups of does together and no Bucks. Two days ago had a group of buck come through without a doe in sight. Wondering if the weather warming up during the day has pulled the plug. I guess I'll know by this weekend since the weather is due to change back to cold. My area is historically a rut zone, each year at Thanksgiving I see Bucks I've never seen before rutting. This year its the same local crowd with no sense of urgency.

DB, KR reported the same activity over by work yesterday. A little better than what I've seen, but said they didn't seem to energized.

Time to hunt!

Last years fawns (doe) go into estrous late, and then any doe that were missed the first time around go in around Thanksgiving.  2nd rut is happening, though it isn't anything like the first push

I'm hunting Mt. Spokane and the rut seems to be on.  I had a spike, 2pt and small 3 pt come in Monday.  None if them cared about my bait they were all sniffing at the doe in heat wicks.  The 3 pt took off after a doe that came in as well. Driving in this morning there was a 4 pt right next to the road with a doe. I stopped and about could have hit him with my door. He didn't give a crap about me as long as his doe was there.  That said its been Slow in the stand today.

Very busy for the whitetail.  Does bred now fawn mid June.  Some of this years fawns will cycle and keep the bucks looking.  Great time to be out watching and learning.

I have seen black tails go into 3 different rut cycles.  Many years ago I was out hunting coyotes in shelton on the last couple of days of December.  ! ran across an old guy hunting alone with a late muzleloader deer tag.  About an hour later while calling coyotes a doe comes into my fawn in destress call.  Behind her was a huge 4 point blacktail buck that chased her around with his nose in her business. I backed out and drove like hell to find the old man.  He was only about a mile away and by the time we got back the buck was up on the hillside and mounting the doe.  We let him finish his job and the old man shot what was his biggest buck ever.  I have seen bucks in full rut from the middle of september on through the end of december.
