Title: Alaskan Trapping Journal
Post by: TeacherMan on November 04, 2013, 03:19:01 PM
Well guys I've decided to head up my trapping journal again this year! With that said my life has done about 180 degree turn. All I really have to say is GOD is good!!! Last Nov. I ended up getting a divorce, I can't say this was a total shock with all the ups and downs my marriage had but at the same time it was... With that said I was able to move forward and really just focused on my teaching, trapping and two little girls. Since then I met a new lady, got engaged and just remarried a couple weeks ago  :chuckle: I chuckle because I swore up and down Id never do it again. Well like I said God is good and its amazing being with a woman that actually loves me (and only me  :bash: ) and loves both my little girls. The only reason I'm giving a little back story is some of you know that I'm a teacher. Now I'm also a double small business owner, lol. My wife's past husband past away four years ago. They ran and owned a cabinet and granite company that she kept going after he past unexpectedly. Since then she also opened up a Lodge. So now besides teaching I'm helping run two businesses with my wife  :) I never thought I'd love working with someone so much. To top it off she loves the outdoors! We have been working on our trapline together since season opened the end of Sept. and have been doing pretty good on beaver! We have been trapping unit 13 and will set 14 this weekend. Alaska has been having a VERY VERY mild fall. We still have little to no snow and very little if any ice on our ponds. I hope you enjoy the journal this season I just picked up a new sled and 6x6 so I will be able to get even deeper into the back country this fall/winter. I'm now living out of town up toward Sutton so I'm smack in the middle of great territory!

A few more pics of some of my new trapping toys this season and some of my trapping area... The snow machine is a 600 Etec Summit with a Tundra extreme clutch plate and a ton of other extras, the 6x6 is a Polaris Ranger with 27" Mudpros and a custom cage in the bed. The truck load of traps was only my first load out to my house when I was moving  :chuckle: The pic of the house is what I get to wake up to every day  The mountain across the canyon is the upper part of my line, ZERO roads in the area.

One problem I've been having on my line this season are bears. With it being so warm the water in my area hasn't frozen and there are tons of dead salmon. Had a curious 6' blacky at 10yds on my last check just watching me walk down the river system floating/towing a couple beaver behind me. I wasn't sure if I was going to have to use my pistol. I really don't have a need for another black bear rug otherwise his late season hide would have been nice. There meat this time of year along the rivers is pretty much inedible due to all the fish.

snow, snow and more snow... few more pics of yesterday. We had gotten a spike moose the last week of Sept and stored all the remains in fish tote, we drug them out about a mile down the river to start a great bait pile!!! I have to say being able to trap over open bait in AK is very nice  :chuckle: Had to use the winch quite a few times to get it up all the hills because of the snow. I added a pic of what the spot looked like where we dropped the bait pile prior to it snowing. Hoping I can get a few wolves and maybe even a wolverine hitting it

Well, that all brought back memories, teacher.  I grew up in Wasilla....started trapping the Little Susitna when I was in grade school.  That was in the late '50's.  The first beaver I snared through the ice, weighed 55 pounds, and I had to get help to pull it out.  I imagine it weighed as much as I did.

Glad that you got your life back.  Are you doing any good on wolves?

Alaskan reds sell for twice as much as fox. Do in the lower 48 because how prime and thick their fur is. I love Kodiak, Brad is the one who shot himself last Sept. while we were muskrat trapping with a 410 at point blank range. He's came back really good. Had a successful commercial season on his boat now enjoying the fruits of winter 😉 Couple more Kodiak shots...

that lynx and wolverine are just flat awesome  looks a bit cold thats for sure, how long will you useally stay out on a line when its that cold? do you run one line a day or are they set up on like a two or 3 day rotation? looks like fun but i know its alot of work. how many hours a day do you have to put up fur?

I'm running three lines right now as of yesterday it was two just got a great area today. I'm going to pull most of my other two except the bust pile and focus only new one, a lot more sign!!! Lynx and fox. I only check my lines once a week usually no legal check time in AK and it's cold!!! Animals are little bricks when I get them. I use 99% snares or conibears. Most of my sets are snare pens, I'll put a pic of one below. I stay outside all day if it's above -20. When it gets below the to actually wear a coat and stay out no more than 2-3 hrs. As for fur prep I have a young kid at my school that I pay to skin. He grew up in the bush and is better and faster than me! Here are a few pics from today's line.

quite the life for sure, especially when the wife and kid enjoy it to  damn i can barely get my wife off the couch, well if there is a special sale at the mall, then look the hell out, come to think of it, my daughter is that way to  :chuckle: hey teacherman what is it with the c.d hanging in the tree? is it just an eye catcher kinda like a pie plate or grouse wing?
Title: Re: Alaskan Trapping Journal
Post by: Da stump on December 27, 2013, 08:47:25 AM
the cd acts as a long distance attractor then bait or lure that will get them to the trap after they come to investigate.  The pie plates, grouse wings etc do the same thing.
Title: Re: Alaskan Trapping Journal
Post by: TeacherMan on December 27, 2013, 10:08:43 AM
The CDs are super light weight so I can carry a bunch and can be seen from a couple hundred yds away at several of my sets. No lure will do that. Curiosity killed the cat ;) I use Gusto and beaver at my lynx sets. When I have grouse wings I use those in my sets.

We'll today didn't go as planned woke up in a full sweet and just super tight in my chest. Laid around the house most the after noon but around 1:30 couldn't handle it anymore. I went and cut another mile of line and got in three more sets. Two double snare pens and a cubby with a full beaver in it. The spot I put the cubby was a mile almost straight up hill from my other sets and I cut a crazy beaten trail that just needed set ;) No straw sets for fox didn't have the energy to put my sled together, soon. Plus I put a pic in that I call snare pen alley. Full of cat, fox and bunny tracks :)

Few more sets! Wish I had the amount of game in my area as you guys do in WA. With the number of sets I've got out Id be wiping it up in my old area in the NE corner down there. Been getting more wolverine sets in with 330s and 280s this week. Plus more snare pens and a wide open cubby.

Took the girls out to check my short line at the house. Always fun taking the munchkins out even if we don't get anything. I taught my girls how to make a blind corner high bank pee post for fox. Used an OS #2 Bridger coil. Great set that's very plain and non obvious but a killer on anything that passes ;)

Checked my lower line today and pulled most of it, missed a wolf, ducked off the trail 10' prior to a snare following bunny tracks. Dragged a beaver carcass on one trail and just dug out sets from new snow and horrible winds... AK is a black and white world this time of yr.

All my traps are in a backpack. I pull a frozen beaver carcass lol. Breaks down all my tracks and lays a scent trail. Helps keep animals on my trail long enough to get them in a snare 😉

No blacktail in my area. Only moose, black and brown bear and wolves. If I travel a couple hrs north I can get into caribou as a resident I can hunt them. To get into blacktail I have to fly out into PWS or head to Kodiak. Or head way south!

I do hunt but the hunting in AK for the normal joe is not the best. Everyone has the toys to do it! I've got a new 6x6 all decked out this year and I can get 60 miles back into wild country and still run into guys all day. YOU NEED A PLANE!

well that is awesome, ya know, a friend of mine would go up to canada and go on a week long trappin adventure, it was 1000 dollars a person and they slept in a nice warm cabin every night and they got to bring home a fur from each species they trapped, it was my buddy chris his son a friend and his son, the trapper even taught the boys how to trap weasel and such, really took his time, he said it was the most fun he has ever had on a guided hunt of any kind, it might be worth lookn into, there are plenty of guys out there that would love to come along just to check it out... good luck cant wait to see more pics, hopefully you get a couple more wolverines, those a bad arse

Not a bare spot just chunk of snow. After I shot him I went back in and ate breakfast and he started to freeze to the snow lol. He was just in my driveway. The dogs started barking so I went outside to see what was up and he was trotting up the driveway quick shot with the .22 mag next to the door and I was back to getting ready for work.

Well I just got an entire gut pile and hide from a cow moose one of my students just got on a hotshot hunt. It's in the back of my truck in my sled. I'd say it weighs about 400 pounds. Hoping I can actually drag this thing into a new area for a big pile. It's 37° out and myshy no good for my snowmachine. I'll get back with pics later.
Title: Re: Alaskan Trapping Journal
Post by: TeacherMan on January 19, 2014, 06:36:50 PM
I packed it into an area that looks almost to good to be true! I was just about exhausted by the time I found my spot! My sled is an Otter Magnum about 6'x3' with 18" walls and it was overflowing with parts. Its in between a swamp and a stream under a heavy spruce with trails all around it! The birds already had started to hit it before I left so I know the predators shouldn't be far behind. I only had time to set a few snares around it but will set it much harder when I check it in the next few days. Let the animals make the trails for me and back off the pile 50 yds following their tracks to set. I created 4 major entrances to the pile with brush around the rest that a wolverine wouldn't even want to mess with  :chuckle: This should really press them into my snare trails.

Having some super crazy weather up here Alaska! It's 46° on my line today. 90% of my snow is disappearing I feel like I'm trapping in the spring. I'm setting in areas I normally don't set because of heavy snow this year there's no snow hopefully things will start paying off soon getting out lots of sets. I even got out a couple hay sets today! It has a HUGE visual apeal because of the color but it also covers scent extremely well. I like it in crappy weather also because it help keep the trap out of mud and creates a nice bed. There is a muskrat down in the hole I created in it. I also put a shot of pee on the tree behind it  ;)

She came flying down the trail and faster than I could yell at her to stop she flew into one. Perfect catch! Stopped her cold, lol. Well guys figured I should give an update. Here it's goes, slow!!! Crazy winter no snow, high winds with red flag warnings. Single digits to maybe teens. Gusts up to 75mph. Not much moves in that crap. Going to give it another week and then pull until spring water season. Headed up at the end of the month flying to get a few more hours in, I'll take some good pics. Positive side it's been a great winter for the moose, there all over the place. Special draw permits should be out up here the 21st I'll let you guys know if I pull anything. I've got stuff out for everything. We will be moving out of the lodge this month as well back into town so I can finish prepping the lodge out for guests and they will start staying again soon. They say this summer is supposed to be like last summer and if it is you really need to get up to AK! Went 5 weeks last summer with the top off the jeep!

Not sure if I've ever given a web address to our lodge, check it out: alaskadreamslodge.com

Good luck and be safe on your lines!

Saylean, thanks it's been a lot of fun. If we stay in AK we are going to expand the lodge business out. I've been looking at lodges on the Kenai. My wife has a very good granite, flooring, cabinet business we have been thinking of putting on the market. She started it in '95 and is just ready for a change. She loves the outdoors and hospitality industry so lodges fit well.

Okay guys well I ended up with 3 lynx, 11 fox, 2 wolverine, 1 wolf, 15 beaver, 5 weasels muskrat still going and 13 otter.

Not a great season on any standards but it was a very bad snow yr. I'll get it all together for a pic.
