Chum Snag Fest October 2013. You tube
If you can find and post the link please do.
This is so wrong
-
man that pisses me off.
-
The sad thing is I watch people do this every time I go there for chums. I did not video this myself but with what I see it is no different. Every trip we find absolutely giant treble hooks with lead attached. Even found one yesterday and saw the same thing going on.
-
This it?

-
It no wonder our salmon runs will suffer more and more each year. Watched a native on the other side of the river do this two trips ago and wiped the hole clean and everyone left.
-
Thanks I want the word spread. And this is the way to do it. Now if the department would just do something about it with ought closing the river. I notice when they try and close something it just gets worse and the good fishermen are out a area because these jerks.
-
That is a young man that was not raised with respect......for anything!
-
Looks like Skoke "jigging" to me....that's why I quit fishing that sewer a few years ago >:(
-
I don't understand anything in that video. ??? :bash:
In a place you can keep them? Throw them in the ditch? snagging? nobody confronting him?
That kid needs a dad who'll thump him one time with that stick!
-
I dont have the words for this one.
-
Typical Skok tribal "fisherman"! I really sure that is the Skok. I would love to dee that treble hook become lodged in that punk's forehead!
-
Purple shirt behind him was doing the same thing.
-
Couple things....for one I would of rather him being filming the red head standing besides the punk :dunno: :chuckle: Secondly there is no way I could have stood there and watched this little BEEP BEEP Continuing to do that without him taking a swim ....Tribal or not ....Grrrrrrrrrr Total BS !

Chum Snag Fest October 2013. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4G1R84swgU#ws)
-
The only thing surprising to me about this video is the salmon in the ditch. The snagging is completely normal on the skoke. It's also normal to just open the bellies of the chum and take the eggs, then leave the rest to rot. I assume that's what is going to happen to the ditch full of salmon. I don't know if that's the skoke or not I don't recognize that spot but I haven't fished it for probably 8 years.
-
This just kills me .. Here you have a little river where the fish are stacked up like cord wood and no one else is catching sheet ..then here comes the little indian kid who cleans out the hole :bash: :bash: :bash: >:( What bothers me more is they close down rivers like the Skagit which is a Big river because they are worried about us catching to many fish then you have something like this where White people are trying their best to catch one fish and here is this little sheet just jerking away ...Not right and I would not be there watching this without blowing a fuse ! The whole tribal issue is seriously getting on my damn nerves !
-
He sure isn't a very good snagger, nor can he run a billy club
-
Don't you guys know that in 1855 there ansesters had Fiberglas pole monofilament fishing line and waited treble hooks.
-
Fighting snagger salmon SUCKS! I get much more thrill out of feeling the head shake than a tail wag. If I accidently stick one other than in the mouth I break it off. This kid is an idiot and has some issues if he has to club that fish 37 times. One solid thump takes care of it usually. Serial killer in the making...
-
Frustrating to see! I hope when I am with my boys fishing the rivers, we never see this. :bash:
-
Sucks that someone couldn't accidentally knock his sorry behind into the river and the pitch out a nice fat treble to try and save him from drowning. See how he feels.
-
I hope this makes Komo just like the video of the deer vs oar debackle. Shamefull behaviour.
-
12 blows with the stick to kill it. poor guy obviously doesnt know what he is doing at all.
-
That would be nice if it went to the news. But you know the news. Fisherman breaks the law. Shut it down. Pretty typical and not get the true point across.

Sad but true!
-
the salmon aren't just left in the ditch are they? It's just a temporary holding "pond" right????
-
The guys probably just trying to bring some food home for his family give him a break. After all they were here first.
-

I agree, its time for good ol fashioned a$$ stompin to make a come back. I doubt he would have gotten away with this 20 years ago. No criminals or so called minority have any fear anymore, they just do as they please while the rest have to stand by and watch in fear of getting jailed for attempted murder or some other bogus charge for kicking some pukes rear end.

Yep, non white person gets butt kicked=hate crime. White person gets butt kicked and it is just an altercation. Go figure
-
Even if it made the news I doubt anything would happen. This is nothing new. Thats how they fish down on the skoke, its been going on that way as long as I can remember. They will stand side by side with sportsfishermen and do it. I guarantee its happening as we speak.
-
That's called a "skok fly"... Treble hook wrapped in pencil lead... That kid looks like he's part of the tribe, as that's there usual and accustomed ways of fishing the skokomish...
:bash: :bash:
-
That's no different then the non-tribal people who snag. That river is a joke and so are snaggers/flossers everywhere.
-
The snagging is legal per the tribes regs. So, can't really argue the point. However, I would suggest that his treatment of the fish is not the image the tribe would like out there. No different that any other fisherman or hunter making their demographic look bad. He obviously doesn't have any respect for the fish and the care of them.
-
Disgusting :yike: :bash:
-
That's ridiculous, is there anyway to save videos off youtube then report it??
-
This goes on there all the time. :bash: :bash: The local wardens are very aware of this behavior and have cited that family on multiple times. They fight the tickets and win. The only way to get this stopped is to get the video to one of are local TV stations. I was wondering how so many fish ended up in the ditch. I always figured it was yotes and raccoons. This just pisses me off now knowing how they got over there.
-
Disappointing to see for sure. I quit fishing down there 8 years ago, I remember the tribe coming through cleaning out their nets during chum season, throwing the bucks on the shore, cutting the hens open for the eggs, throwing them on the bank and then leaving the whole pile there to rot. There was a pile 6 feet in diameter 2 feet high and 60 yards down river at the next net there was an identical pile. What a waste.
-
The kid is just doing what he was taught. I'd throw in the grandpa and other adults who taught him and kept getting him the net.
The one time i fished hoodsport we saw the same thing. Instead of a ditch full of stripped out salmon, we had the bottom of the bay covered in a thick layer of egg stripped carcasses.
You can see he checks each for eggs before tossing them. You'd think if he had half a brain, he'd be able to spot the bucks from the hens right away and at least toss back the bucks before applying the wood shampoo.
The thing that frustrates me is that chum and humpies are the easiest of the salmon to catch on a rod and real without having to resort to flossing \ snagging techniques. But that takes skill and work and patience and respect - OK, now I see why they don't bother...
-
At least they were only chums. I can't believe that with all those other fishermen that nobody was giving him crap.
-

:yeah: Have we confirmed that the fish in the ditch are wasted?... I know that's the obvious conclusion.
-
Nope but they look discarded to me.
-
They only use chums for the eggs. They have basically no other value, although catfood would be better than leaving them to rot in a ditch
-
What river is that?
-
That is the skok for sure. Absolutley disturbing. They have no respect for the fish or game they harvest. :bash:
-

Ive seen the skoks treat silvers and kings the same way many times. Disgusting ethics in that group, their ancestors are probably rolling in their graves.
-
Seen it with the kings to. Snag and throw them deep into blackberry bushes and repeat. Crazy to see such bright beautiful kings wasted.
-

That or playing the slot machines. But let's be fair. I have seen every ethnic group snag. What I DON'T like is watching the game dept. let them snag at Redondo on the beach in droves as they go out and hit the sportsman's boats for safety checks.
-
Has nothing to do with "ethnic groups". I have the utmost respect for the way many tribes conduct themselves. The skokomish however, do not conduct themselves in a responsible way with fish and wild life. The snagging isnt what bothers me, the wastage is the problem here if you happened to miss that.
I dont condone snagging, but am alot more acceptive of that behavior than this reckless wastage.
Most native tribes would also speak out about this sort of behavior as well.

Yeah, I grew up in Shelton knowing quite a few of the Skoks and fishing that river. Things never change. Far too many in that tribe have zero respect for fish, wildlife or other humans.
-
wow that is horrible. :bash: :bash:
-
What river is this? Some serious snagging.
-
Skokomish in Mason County
-
wow... what a disgusting puke.
-
seems i have seen that video a year ago, or maybe, its just the same kid in another video from 2012. you would be surprised how many poaching/snagging vids are on you tube.
-
while were on the topic of snagging... I stumbled onto this "gem" while watching youtube tonight... Alaska Salmon Snagging Caught on Tape (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOKvXO9O1ok#)
-
Prime example of why there is tension between the tribe and us non-tribal folks. Speaking for myself, I feel I contribute to our natural resources and enjoy part of the harvest. I pay with my $$$, work on predator control, understand habitat, work to improve it etc. It makes it hard to see any group of people who seem to only be looking to TAKE and not give. Also makes it tough when it APPEARS that rule breakers aren't dealt with within the tribe.
Understand that I'm not saying ALL. But I agree with many on here that this is no rare event. Fish and game in this state aren't valued per critter. They are valued dependant on who takes them home.....and that has to do with your genetic makeup.
Sigh.......I suppose it is what it is and "nothing to see here" is where it all ends up. Makes it tougher when we don't report things because we assume they belong to a tribe.
It's a mess...
-
Make the perps swallow 'em whole
-
on the whole "tribal" thing, i'd bet a paycheck for every tribal snagger there are at least 5 non-tribal "fisherman" doing the same thing. :twocents: is snagging any different when doing it with "legal gear?" 95% of the non-tribal people who fish the skok king run are snaggers. in case some of you didn't know kings rarely eat corkies and yarn. (yes I know those are chums and will eat c&y, just making an example)

Okay but are they filling a ditch up with fish?

That's the point! Because we get used to tribal guys having different rules, we get used to people doing it. It's not like they (but not a bad idea) have to wear a tribal issued vest :)

The truly sad thing is that the kids doing what he was shown to do. What a waste, of fish and a person. Do you think the muckleshoots will club the deer and elk in the white river tree farm like this now that they own it ?.dont forget to stop by your local casino on the way home for some of there excellent buffet......another thing ill never understand is how someone can set foot in one of those places.

Same here, those casino's don't get a dime out of me.

Maurice Sporting Goods use to sell a bunch of snagging gear up in Alaska for their snagging season. Game department actually produced a pamphlet on how to become a "Master Snagger". It is a very popular fishery up there. Or at least use to be when I was in the industry.
